View Full Version : Libya
Tahoe 03-17-2011, 06:53 PM or Libia as the White house spelled it.
So the UN passed a no fly zone resolution. About 2 weeks late, but passed it nonetheless.
Hermy 03-17-2011, 07:43 PM Libia is the international spelling. Just a side-effect of an intellectual leadership
Uncle Mxy 03-17-2011, 08:00 PM Will bit.ly live longer than Libya?
Tahoe 03-18-2011, 04:27 PM Obama - "The US and the international community moved swiftly"
LMAO
Glenn 03-19-2011, 03:48 PM U.S. firing missles.
Tahoe 03-19-2011, 03:57 PM Operation Odyssey Dawn
WTF?
mercury 03-20-2011, 05:42 PM Watch out for Russia giving Libia a hand (they warned us not to attack)... the Arab nations are split on support... I can see why they would be threated by yet another intervention.
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 07:01 PM But they just 'abstained' the resolution in the UN. They didn't block it by voting 'no'...afaict.
That said, its a tough call on what to do. I just wish if we are going to do this, it would have been done a couple weeks ago, maybe 3 now, when it really would have saved lives.
Tough call.
Hermy 03-20-2011, 07:03 PM Your big concern here is saving foreign lives Tahoe?
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 07:05 PM ^ I forgot bro, I'm a republican, I just want to murder people. Sorry.
Hermy 03-20-2011, 08:19 PM I could give 2 shits if people in another nation die in a civil war. I'm just surprised you are to such an extent that you'd go to war over it.
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 08:24 PM I said 'its a tough call'.
But if we are going to do it, do it when it matters most.
Barry said its about stopping a Gov't using its military to kill its own peeps, so I was thinking that is the goal of the US. To maximize that goal, do it early where we will save lives.
Glenn 03-20-2011, 08:30 PM If the basis for using force is the killing of a nation's own citizens, doesn't the killing have to actually take place before a move is made?
It's a little easier to reconcile than, "we're pretty sure they were going to do it soon".
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 08:58 PM True. And that happened about 3 weeks ago. He used his military on some of those early demonstrators. Creating a no fly zone at that point, would have saved lives. Then when the internationals didn't do anything, he really went off.
Its a slippery slope and and at the bottom of the slippery slope is a big pile of shit.
But it would have been nice if Egypt, SA(not San Antonio) and other Arab countries would have handled this.
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 09:00 PM Its pretty clear though, that Barry wants to get in and GTFO! And thats a good thing.
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 09:05 PM This might speed things up a lil bit. Speed things up, as in, get Col G to back down.

Tahoe 03-20-2011, 09:06 PM If I was Ghadafi, I'd call myself General Ghadafi, not Colonel Ghadafi.
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 09:18 PM I could give 2 shits if people in another nation die in a civil war. I'm just surprised you are to such an extent that you'd go to war over it.
??? I'm not sure I'd classify this as a civil war. Maybe, who knows.
Glenn 03-20-2011, 09:21 PM I feel like Tahoe is setting this up just to turn heel.
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 09:25 PM ^ That would be fun for the GOP to do to Barry what the Dems did to Bush. :)
Get lied to and then be made about it?
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 10:08 PM LMAO @ lied to. Nice one.
lol@ stealing Gla's bits with "nice one".
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 10:33 PM So all the peeps that use 'nice one' stole it from Glandular? How old is Glan?
Are you trying to make me laugh tonight? Cuz you are.
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 10:35 PM That sounded snarky...I appologize.
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 10:40 PM That sounded snarky...I appologize.
lol@ stealing Gla's bits with "snarky".
Now you've got a point.
Tahoe 03-20-2011, 10:46 PM Qaddafi's home.

Glenn 03-21-2011, 08:40 AM That's one of the greatest opens for a movie, ever.
Tahoe 03-22-2011, 08:28 PM Best case scenario is for another Military Coup. It'd be the second in as many months. Egypt.
Egypts was bloodless (we think), but this would be a great time for a General to insert some lead in Qaddafi's brain.
Tahoe 03-22-2011, 09:01 PM Not to belabor the point, but I'm going to anyway. I was thinking about Mubarak today when I was driving. It had to be that Mubarak got a knock on his door at 2am 3am or something and said
E Military: Your taxi is here.
HM: What taxi?
E Military: You are invited on a vacation. Your plain is waiting for you.
HM: I'm not going on a vacation right now.
E Military: Well its either that or...
HM: Ok. I'll pack.
E Military: Thats ok. We'll bring you some stuff later.
I'm not sure why I even took the time to do that, but I did.
bits and bites are free on the internets.
The military in Egypt had/has a large economic interest in maintaining social stability since they run all the profit making industries in the country. I haven't read anything that characterizes the Libyan armed forces as anything but foreign mercenaries.
Thought this was a good read for the description the guy paints of the two different types of Arab countries calling for revolution, modern nation states with citizens that see themselves as one people and "tribes with flags" with citizens existing together in a very power dependent worldview.

Tahoe 03-30-2011, 10:06 PM All these peeps with their panties in a bunch cuz Barry supposably has boots on the ground in Labia. I say, HE BETTER HAVE SOME COVERT SHIT GOIN ON.
He needs to take out Qaddafi or Qaddafi and Labia will become a terrorist state, who's #1 target will be the US.
Take his ass out, Barry.
Tahoe 03-30-2011, 10:06 PM ^ now that we've went in there.
mercury 03-31-2011, 03:05 AM I know how we solved this problem once upon a time.
3oEA6zK_8u8
Well done sir... nice timing :^)
mercury 03-31-2011, 03:18 AM Let's be honest here... Gaddafi is in the fetal position looking to crawl back in his mother's womb about now... there's no major threat.
There needs to be more effort building internal disloyalty than arming al-Qaeda's military.
Have we not learned from Iran, Iraq & Afghanistan?
Tahoe 03-31-2011, 10:22 PM ^ I'd say there isn't a major threat right now. He can't even show his face right now. But if we don't kill him or make sure he gives up power, he could make a comeback. Dudes supposed to have a house full of gold bars and cash. Money buys you power over there...and over here for that matter.
Tahoe 04-01-2011, 01:07 PM I think its time this country's Gov't stop thinking about other Nations, where there are uprisings, as so black and white. Leaders are either Good or Bad, if leaders are Bad, then the peeps are good. Doesn't work that way. duh
Some of these leaders that are considered Bad, might be the lesser of two evils.
I think you hit a huge issue. You'd have to read the New York Times, but Thomas Friedman writes a couple of interesting opinion pieces on exactly what you're talking about:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/27/opinion/27friedman.html?_r=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
Tahoe 04-01-2011, 01:33 PM I'll read them later. But in Iraq, if we hadn't stayed there and made sure elections would be held, that would have erupted, even moreso, after we left. There are still peeps who say Iran will come into Iraq as soon as we leave.
But Libya is a good example and I'm not sure Egypt will turn out better than it was.
I'll read those articles later.
Hermy 04-01-2011, 03:47 PM Yes, no matter what we do, the people in those countries are going to hate us. If we leave they will install bad govt. Now, the question, at what cost tolerable govt.?
