Anyone have one? Aren't they basically a laptop? ...that doesn't flip open?

More like a bigger version of Ipod Touch. Less capability than a laptop.

Do you know anyone who has one? Does he/she like or dislike?

Vinny

My friend and his wife both have one and love them. While true that it doesn't have all the capabilities of a laptop, for people like them that don't really use computers for much but entertainmenet and interweb type stuff, it has essentially replaced their laptops...

yeah, my Dad has one, I think he likes it. I like it too and would get one if I had any reason to.

I got one as a gift over the holidays and LOVE it. First of all I'm a big fan of portability, the smaller and lighter the better. It's definitely not as powerful as a laptop but it's been absolutely great. I use it for work now all the time. I use a handwriting app to take notes and another one to organize all my notes and share them with all of my computers. The app Goodreader allows you to set up files exactly as you would with a PC; you can create folders, organize them and the files in them, move files around, open and create zips and even send everything via e-mail. I live in New Hampshire now and bus in to Boston. The bus actually has wifi on it so I'm working on the pad with e-mails and whatnot while I have the Ipod part of it playing my music. I have a great ToDo app that I use every day.

My only caveat with it is that I've yet to find a strong app for office stuff. Numbers, Pages and Keynote are great for visualizing but they're mediocre to weak on creating and editing (granted they're versions very limited to the Ipad). I'd especially like a stronger app for creating and editing spreadsheets.

Even the gaming has been fun on it. It's not an Xbox or anything but there are some fun easy free games and some pretty cool real deal games. My wife's company got her one (with 3G even) and we do that Air Hockey game via bluetooth.

Reading that over it sounds like I got paid from Apple to write that post. Truth is though that I haven't had this much fun with a new toy in about 10 years, since when I got a new PS2.

Pros: It's exceptionally well designed and easy to use. For what it does, it does it as smoothly and easily as any gadget you'll ever pick up and you'll look cool and futuristic using it. It's also the only tablet device on the market worth considering and that's not going to change in the immediate future. Windows is garbage on a tablet and android for tablet is still a work in progress. It's ipad or laptop for probably at least another year.

Cons: Being restricted to a set of applications curated and sold by apple that mostly just duplicate things you can already get free through your web browser. As a value proposition it really is kind of a ripoff compared to a laptop.

Overall it's a fantastic toy if you just have money to burn but as a value proposition it's a ripoff compared to a laptop.

I have had mine since they were released. Here is the unbiased skinny.

The good: very easy to use. Boots ridiculously fast, battery is outstanding when compared to a netbook
Great for reading ebooks, web surfing is unmatched, photo viewing, video viewing, whole web page viewing without zooming kills the iPod touch/iPhone. Apps are great. I love the size with my calendar.

The bad:
Way heavier than a kindle or nook for reading, but not bad for anything short, you can't see shit outside without shade, honestly the wifi reception is worse than my droid or my net book, but once it grabs the single the iPad browses faster, no USB which is just apple kicking you in the nuts, no ability to charge other peripherals via USB like a net book. No hdmi, no hi def, expensive, and AT&T is gay. NO FLASH

Overall I am a Mac sloppy at home but realize the deficiencies of the device. Prioritize what you want in the device. If it's internet, looking at pics or viDs, apps then you are good. If its for photo editing, vid editing, gaming (arguably), or any other advanced functioning, get a laptop.

Btw I also love using it with my sonos music system in particular.

Also typing on it is surprisingly better than I thought it would be. Not a fan of the grammar checker as it changed signal to single and slappy to sloppy, but otherwise a great device. I will be selling mine for the new one in a couple months since I have a technical indulgence problem and also because I can use the camera function at work.

And thanks for the info...BBF and others.

That's a tough call, Tahoe. I feel like, if I were to have it in college, it probably would have been more toy than anything.

It's not a substitute for a laptop IMO. You still need a computer for work and school. But it can be incredibly useful. I take it and leave the laptop at home for trips for work most of the time and I can do anything I need (more or less) on it.

I've seen people take notes with them at workshops. They can be convenient for situations where you don't need a lot of software tools.

My aunt and uncle rave about their iPads -- perfect for road trips on their motorcycles, so I'm told.

Me? I have a netbook which is far more versatile for stuff I care about.

I don't where what I do is all that compatible with a tablet.

Aside from having bad-ass manly Hello Kitty stuff on your Ipad, it's all about the Apps. I find the Twitter App great, but the Facbook one sucks. The Ipad's own e-mail set up and calendar are pretty good. The reminders are a very nice feature even if it took them a year to have it. I use Pulse for news, Flipboard is amazing too, but I like choosing my sources not what my friends may like. I don't know what life was like before Evernote. I use it for all my note taking now. GoodReader is fantastic for organizing and managing your files and if you want to get into your computer Logmein is awesome. I use Iwork but I'm not too impressed with it. Both Kindle and iBooks are great for reading. I use iBooks a bit more, but that's just preference. And if you have any interest in comic books Comix by Comixology is a sweet app. I use Skype's own app for that account and IMO for other messaging accounts.

Spending far too much time playing The Sims.

I think that's largely guilt-based since I discovered my 3 Sims standing in their own piss when I forgot about them for a day and a half.

That quote is actually very solid. There were a couple of weeks where, thanks to a New York Times article sucking some Apple dick, everyone started talking about how China is ahead of America in actual factory technology and business models. Like that was really the reason that China has all the manufacturing they do today. Obviously we had equal conditions and pricing and, well, they just do it better than us. The fact that they can round up 20k workers at 4 a.m. because Mr. Jobs doesn't like the fucking glass on his new product and has to change it at the last second is something our world should aspire to.
