any of the remaining posters movie buffs?

heres an interesting topic i overheard: what actor had the best decade of movies?

a few that instantly come to mind:

bogart in the 1940's
brando in the 50s
newman in the 60s
pacino in the 70s
nicholson in the 70s
tom cruise in the 80s
deniro in the 80s
hanks in the 90s
dicaprio in the 00's

Vinny

I might take Deniro's 70's over 80's but you can't go wrong either way. Raging Bull being exactly in'80 and Goodfellas exactly in '90 kind of skews things.

his 70's were pretty good. i need to see deer hunter again. i saw it when i was too young. i think the next time i see it i'll appreciate it much more.

im huge on the godfathers, but not crazy about what he brought to 2. and i still havent seen mean streats.

he had some high points in the 90's (i like casino much better than goodfellas) but the decade also saw his career kind of take a big downswing.

i feel like you could have a serious argument just about deniro's best decade. i'd personally go 80's, 70's, 90's. but its close.

also, charlton heston killed it in the 50s. 10 commandments (56), touch of evil (58), and ben hur (59) has to be up there with the best 4 year stretches.

I've gotta watch all 3 of those again, it's been too long. I love the sci-fi Heston, Planet of the Apes, Soylent Green, Omega Man....that's a niche of mine though...

You should check out Deer Hunter again, it's a bit slow but it's really good. I can't bring myself to love it but I like it alot if that makes sense....

Deniro's career is greatly influenced by his relationship with Scorsese (i know, Captain Obvious...) and vice versa. Scorsese just kills it and Deniro has been in pretty much all the best ones....The King of Comedy is great, check it out if you haven't.

Here's another interesting one...Deniro or Pacino? I take Deniro hands down but a lot of that's from the annoying whiny Pacino of the last several years. Also, I just watched "Simone" so that certainly doesn't help...

I admit that Hanks was very successful in the 90s but I really don't like his acting at all.

When I think of the best actor of the 90s I generally think of Kevin Spacey. Dude's been kind of a tool since then, but what a decade for that guy. Seven, Usual Suspects, American Beauty, Glengarry, The Ref, A Time To Kill, LA Confidential...if you could give 7 excellent performances in 10 years, you could do a lot worse than those.

Harrison Ford had a nice run in the 80s with Solo, Deckard and Indy.

WTFchris

Ford is one that comes to mind for sure. I've never been disappointed with his acting. Certainly I haven't seen all of his films and I am sure there are bad ones (but probably due to script and not him).

The 80's were damn good for him. Star Wars V and VI, all three Indiana Jones. 90's were good too with the Jack Ryan movies and the fugitive.

I hate to bring him up because he's turned into a giant douche, but Mel Gibson has always been one of my favorite actors (ignoring off stage BS). In the 90's you had 2 Lethal Weapons, Braveheart, Ransom, Maverick, Man without a Face, Conspiracy Theory and Payback. (Patriot was in 2000). That's a damn good decade.

Hanks certainly has a great resume, but there aren't a lot of his films that I think are outstanding performances and his good movies are spread out over many decades. I like Saving Private Ryan, Green Mile, Toy Story series (but it is just voices), Catch me if you Can (that was more Dicaprio though), and league of their own. I haven't seen the Dan Brown movies (I saw a history channel show that disproved a lot of that stuff so I haven't really been interested in them). He has a lot of chick flicks that bring him down.

A guy can do a string of shit movies (KPAX, Pay It Forward) and survive it and still be awesome. But a guy cannot do a string of shit movies, then pour his personal fortune into a terrible Bobby Darin biopic, and then disappear into British theater for 10 years, and survive.

I really should have thought about Denzel. That's a really good mention, although he is pretty much the same guy in every movie. "I'm Denzel, and I'm nice, but I'm about to blow up, and I'm gonna stick my finger in the face of anyone who doesn't like it!"

Off topic: could we as a society maybe have come up with someone better to make the Malcolm X movie than Spike Lee? Spike Lee movies don't hold up well outside of the era of leather Africa medallions and DAS EFX LPs.

duvall's 70's were great. godfather I and II, mash, the network, apocalypse now. 5 indisputably great movies.

kevin costner had a good ten year run, but it was mid 80s to mid 90s (untouchables to tin cup).

same deal with dustin hoffman, the graduate to marathon man.

also, joe pesci in the 90's had a great run. the scorsese movies, home alone, the lethal weapons, my cousin vinny (mcv), jfk, a bronx tale.

In the same way that I give Ford credit for a great decade in the 80s for playing Han Solo, Han Solo in a trenchcoat and Han Solo with a hat, Schwarzenegger had a similarly iconic 80s playing Conan, Robot Conan and Conan vs Predator.

Is this actors only or actress too?

Not the biggest fan of her but Julia Roberts has had a lot of hits too (not sure if there has been a dominant decade).

I guess the 90's maybe.

Steel Magnolias (1989), Pretty Woman, Pelican Brief, Michael Collins, Best Friends Wedding, Conspiracy Theory, Stepmom, Runaway Bride, Notting Hill, Erin Brockovich are all ones I recognize as being main stream movies.

She's not my cup of tea, but certainly had some hits.

peter sellers had a great 60's as well.

im surprised that some of the most respected actors, peter o'toole, lawrence olivier, alec guiness, you couldnt even really make an argument for them.

anthony hopkins had a very debatable 90's. silence of the lambs is great, but then you have a bunch of stuff like legends of the fall, dracula, the edge, nixon, amistad, meet joe black where i could see some people thinking atleast some of those movies were awful.

elizabeth taylor had a good stretch from 56 to 66, giant, cat on a hot tin roof, cleopatra, who's afraid of virginia wolf.

All his movies might not be great but every actor stars in some poor films. Do you blame the actor, the writers or the director?

I remember watching Caveman's Valentine with Samuel L Jackson - movie was shit but SLJ delivered in it. He did everything in his power to make it watchable.

And for me that's the key to a great actor - the movie might be shit, poor production, poor script, poor direction but if the actor is working their ass off to try and save the piece of shit then you've got to give credit where it's due.

i find his performances joyless/humorless/soulless/charismaless/sterile etc. i get he likes to do the serious macho stuff, but you just get the sense watching him act that neither he nor anyone else had any fun making the movie. the new bonds are sort of the same way, but daniel craig atleast injected some life into the role.

i just get the senese bale thinks his acting when he's dressed as batman (in the super deep, almost cartoonish voice) is what acting is all about. if you've seen empire of the sun, this was true even then, and he was like 10 in that movie.

its not like i only like comedies, either. i much prefer the serious drama. i just think theres something missing in bale to make him an enjoyable actor.

Oh I agree he lacks that certain charisma that some other actors have. Cruise, Pitt, even Matt Damon has more of the "it" factor. Shit, even Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has "it".

But I think Bale is one of those bullshit "method" actors... like Daniel Day Lewis. The dude might be a great actor but sometimes it's fucking hard to watch his flicks.

Same with Bale - some of his roles are just so fucking hard to watch. Even as Bruce Wayne he can't act like the "playboy" because it's just not him - he lacks that certain something to act it well...

But I wouldn't call his performancs "souless" - I think he believes that his character (in whatever flick) has suffered. Is dark. Is deep. Has serious emotional issues. Look at his choices since 2000. Not a funy flick to be seen.

Maybe the dude has his own emotional issues and can't do anything really light, fun and happy?

But that doesn't stop me from watching The Machinist and then Batman Begins and going "Wow - is this the same actor?". I think the guy has always put his all into every flick and if we're talking about great actors at the moment the guy has to rate a mention.

Not saying he's the best of the 00's or anything like that - just that he's a contender.

The lack of Bruce Campbell in this thread is a travesty.
