Report: Tom Wilson out as Pistons/Palace leader

The Detroit News

Tom Wilson has left his position as president and CEO of Palace Sports and Entertainment, according to a report.

ClickOnDetroit.com, attributing the information to sources, says chief operating officer Alan Ostfield will take over Wilson's position.

Wilson was not at his usual seat at The Palace Tuesday night during the Pistons' game against Minnesota.

Wilson joined the Pistons organization in 1977. He handles all business functions of the Pistons, The Palace, DTE Energy Music Theatre and Meadow Brook Music Festival.

He is a native of Detroit who graduated from Cass Tech High School and Wayne State University.

Armageddon has arrived!

Or salvation.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this, especially given the timing. Wilson was slime, but he was good away from basketball operations.

Dumars is next, if he doesn't like the new owner, he might be gone rather sooner than later...

More on Ostfield (from Crain's)

Ostfield joined the organization in 2000 as senior vice president for legal affairs and assumed his current title as COO of PS&E and the Pistons, and as assistant general manager of the Pistons, in 2002.

He previously was senior vice president and general counsel for the San Diego Padres.

This is long overdue for "Teflon Tom"

From the Mlive blog Joe is safe:
Alan Ostfield on WDFN: "My main role with the Detroit Pistons is supporting Joe Dumars"

I would LOL if Isiah got a group of people to buy the team.

I have always really disliked this guy. It's almost as good as when Millen was fired. I know that sounds crazy, but its true.

Bad Boys salvation. Isaiah buys the team, Dumars GMs, Laimbeer and Mahorn on the sidelines. Rodman as a cheerleader.

Wilson might be one of the buyers (per Mlive)

This is kind of interesting speculation:
http://mjdevilling.wordpress.com/2010/02/22/wieme-weighs-in-on-wilson/

I was thinking this morning that Wilson might try to buy the Bobcats if MJ drops the ball down there this week. Just a SWAG, so probably not.

Does Wilson have that much money?

I think he wants to turn his "know where the bodies are buried" knowledge of the organization into a real ownership stake. I bet the Davidson camp won't let him swing that while being part of the brain trust who's shopping for buyers.

^ I thought he was 'out', so how can he be a part of the brain trust shopping for buyers? Or did they retain him just for that?

I didn't know, and still don't really know, what he did to revolutionize the whatever he revolutionized. It looks like he came up with ways to capture ancilllary income. Is it really that difficult when you work for a guy that owns an NBA team? And all the other stuff Davidson owned? Its difficult for me to give this guy props.

And I don't think he has the balls to put up his own dough to buy a team. He's a tool.

Tom Wilson is working for Mike Illitch now according to Don Shane.

Ilitch Holdings hires Tom Wilson as president and CEO of new enterprise (http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2010/02/litch_holdings_expected_to_ann.html)

Ilitch didn't rule out buying the Pistons or the entire Palace sports empire, but indicated they are more focused on their existing business.

"We've got two great sports teams, we've had an incredible assortment of business. This is a lot of work, a lot of opportunities which we have,'' Ilitch said. "We're very focused on our Detroit Red Wings winning hockey games and our Detroit Tigers winning baseball games, selling Little Caesars Pizzas. I would say we're focused on our existing businesses and we'll go from there. It's tough to say at this point (whether there is interest in the Pistons).''

It would certainly stabilize the ownership situation of the Pistons.

So, he has less ambition than I gave him credit for. I assumed wrong. He's just a rat leaving a sinking ship.

Owners in more prosperous markets have stadiums they can't capitalize on.

I thought he was 'out', so how can he be a part of the brain trust shopping for buyers? Or did they retain him just for that?
Before he was out, he was part of the brain trust shopping for buyers -- the only non-Davidson rep, along with Davidson's wife, son, son-in-law, and private attorney.
