View Full Version : Which would be more difficult: Finding a taker for Rip or Max?
Zekyl 01-26-2010, 11:03 AM Which would be more difficult: Finding a taker for Rip or Max?
Rip is a solid player, a quality starter, and a veteran presence, but he's got a much bigger contract and he's getting old.
Max has the smaller contract and he's a solid energy guy off the bench, plus he's a big, but he's overpaid for what he brings to the table because of his inconsistency.
I guess it would depend on fit. If you find a team that has an obvious hole and an expiring contract, then you could make it work.
Hermy 01-26-2010, 11:31 AM Max IMO.
One has never been bad, the other has never been good.
Glenn 01-26-2010, 11:45 AM Max can't even get consistent PT on a team void of quality bigs.
But nobody is likely to want Rip's deal, so it's probably Max.
I split this out of the Tay/JJ thread.
Kstat 01-26-2010, 11:53 AM Rip can be dealt tomorrow for Elton Brand if Joe made a phone call.
Point is, there are plenty of worse deals out there than Rip's. AK47 comes to mind as well.
Hermy 01-26-2010, 11:53 AM Yeah, I'm not honestly in tune with just how cost averse teams really are right now. I'm just basing it off the opinion that Rip is worth his deal (when playing) and Max hasn't been.

Dozens. Zach Randolph got moved, Rip can get moved.
Glenn 01-26-2010, 04:06 PM Dozens. Zach Randolph got moved, Rip can get moved.
Randolph is a big expiring contract in a few months, Rip isn't.
Glenn 01-26-2010, 04:23 PM Randolph is a big expiring contract in a few months, Rip isn't.
Not to mention that he's a big and 3+ years younger.
Hermy 01-26-2010, 05:00 PM And he punches teammates (emphasis on the s) in the face, and has one of the worst winning percentages of any max paid player ever, and Richardson had one year on his deal, and Randolph expires in a few months if you mean 17 so they actually took on salary and years to get him, and he likes to smoke weed while he drives.
Glenn 01-26-2010, 05:04 PM I see you twisted "he's a big expiring contract in a few months" into "he expires in 17 months".
Well played.
Those other things are superfluous, being fairly typical in today's NBA.
Hermy 01-26-2010, 05:40 PM Yeah, I really thought you were trying to say that he was able to be moved for salary reasons, when in fact the salary situation he bore was much worse. At least in the examples K-S gave the deals were close to equal.
Which other player has punched 2 teammates in the face?
Which other player has one of the worst winning percentage of any max paid player? I think that's always been the biggest knock on him, his teams play bad with him as the lead.

Which other players were max-deal players for the Blazers, Knicks, Clippers, and Grizzlies? Not that I think he's not a terribly overpaid guy, but it's not entirely his fault that his record is so terrible.
Hermy 01-26-2010, 06:11 PM Just like it isn't Rip's fault we won so much, but he sure helped by being a team player. And it will help when we look to move him.
Randolph is not reflective of the NBA as Glenn would have you believe. He is the absolute worst of a bad scene. He will do it again. He will burn down a club or pee on a police horse or fight a woman. Rip will run in the sand with Reggie Miller, which may be gay, but GMs dig on it.
Glenn 01-26-2010, 06:15 PM I actually agree with you on Randolph, bad dude.
Rip's rep is probably that of a diva, but I'm not aware of any other red flags.
Glenn 01-26-2010, 06:19 PM I like what Memphis did by acquiring him, though.
They basically had a one year trial to see if he would work out, and if he didn't, he'll be a huge expiring contract this summer.
They looked kinda dumb at the time, but pretty damn smart right now.
Rip has 3 more seasons on his deal after this one, and unlike Randolph, his game won't be peaking when he's an expiring.
Hermy 01-26-2010, 06:51 PM Yeah, but if we deal Rip for someone with 4 years left after this one.......
Glenn 01-26-2010, 07:05 PM Hell, as long as that someone is over 6'8" and can actually play around the rim, I'm game.
If you are going to overpay dudes, might as well not overpay a bunch of smalls that play the same position.
Pharaoh 01-27-2010, 06:49 AM One has never been bad, the other has never been good.
This.
Despite Rip's age and contract he is a proven playoff performer. Any team with a 2-4 year "window" could really use him, regardless of whoever else they have.
Maxiell? Fuck! He was never gonna be anything more than a role player when he got drafted and the only thing that has changed from draft night is that he's now overpaid.
Glenn 01-27-2010, 07:40 AM Back when trades were actually made based on talent/performance I agree that Rip>Max, but the only thing I'm sure of now is that they both got contracts that they shouldn't have, and neither of them will be easy to move.
It's going to take a special situation or maybe even passing them off as a tag along with other premium assets (Stuckey and/or the pick) to get it done.
The other option might be taking back an equally bad or worse deal in exchange, but with the team ownership situation being what it is, even that is unlikely.
Pharaoh 01-27-2010, 08:03 AM But GD - if we traded Rip for Brand tomorrow are we taking back an "equally" bad contract?
One guy is a big man that scores in the paint and grabs boards.
The other plays on the same team as Ben Gordon.
WTFchris 01-27-2010, 10:10 AM I would probably swap RIP for Brand, but only if they take Max too. That would equal the money out over the length of both contracts.
Randolph also likes to share rape victims.
That was Randolph right? Sloppy seconds on a chick who said she didn't consent?
Also, Rip doesn't have a bad contract. He's not free. But he's not over paid. Kid went to 3 all-star games (coaches pick, not T-Mac style) and won a championship while being the leading scorer every year his team went to 6 straight conference finals.
Don't let Gla talk Rip down to make his terrible argument better, HE LOVES TO DO THAT. Dude is the classic "grass is greener" poster.
Also, lol@ spending a year crying "OH NO! What if RIP LEAVES!!???" and then spend the length of his contract extension crying about being stuck with him.
Glenn 01-27-2010, 10:56 AM You love to twist that part.
Being concerned about not having a plan if he had left is different than wanting to lock him up long term at $10m+.
But you know this.
If I knew that Joe was going to throw crazy money at Ben Gordon, then you let Rip walk or trade him pre-extension.
WTFchris 01-27-2010, 12:46 PM RIP is overpaid if he's going to shoot sub %40 from now on. If he goes back to shooting over %45 then he can be a valuable Piston (or trade piece). At that point you can talk about moving a different guard. Until then, his contract is an albatross.
Hermy 01-27-2010, 12:50 PM RIP is overpaid if he's going to shoot sub %40 from now on. If he goes back to shooting over %45 then he can be a valuable Piston (or trade piece). At that point you can talk about moving a different guard. Until then, his contract is an albatross.
Oh God, no doubt. The presumption is Rip is a rythm player and he's finding it again.
Bigger worry may be the sudden injury issues.
Hermy 01-27-2010, 12:50 PM Randolph also likes to share rape victims.
That was Randolph right? Sloppy seconds on a chick who said she didn't consent?
That was Chauncey.
The only thing I remember about Chauncey is my buddy who used to bounce at Se7en would see him come in with two women on his arm every couple of months.
This is what I was thinking of with Randolph http://deadspin.com/202232/zach-randolph-has-miserable-sex-shows
Uncle Mxy 01-28-2010, 06:03 AM Chauncey settled out of court with a nutjob who accused him of gang raping her along with Ron Mercer at Fatoine's place in Boston. This was shortly after Chauncey was caught stealing from the campus bookstore at U-Colorado.
I'm not surprised we only got AI for him, and not even a first round pick.
Pharaoh 01-28-2010, 06:17 AM I'd take Brand in a deal for Rip and Kwame right now.Brand isn't a dominant big but he certainly can play 30 minutes most nights and put up 15 and 8 with a block. And apparently he's a "choir boy" off the floor too.I really don't know how you guys expect Joe to acquire some dominant big man in a trade - teams aren't exactly giving those guys away. Joe's best chance at a big is the Draft or he's got to take a risk on someone like Brand, or Amare.
Memphis gave one away last year. Minnesota the year before that. NBA is FULL of opportunities every year.
Pharaoh 01-29-2010, 06:52 AM Memphis gave one away last year. Minnesota the year before that. NBA is FULL of opportunities every year.
Please show me where the opportunites are for us this year cause I've lost all hope of us making a trade
Suns want to trade Amare. Minnesota wants to trade Jefferson. These guys get shopped and moved all the time.
Pharaoh 01-31-2010, 08:51 AM Do you honestly think Joe is gonna get seriously involved in trade talks with Minny or the Suns?
My guess is that those teams would ask for Stuckey straight away and Joe wouldn't wanna do it.
MoTown 01-31-2010, 12:49 PM I'd give Stuckey away in a second for Jefferson. I'd throw in Daye. Having a solid Big is the hardest thing to find in basketball. It's a lot harder to find that instead of having a SG pretending to play PG.

I'd give Stuckey away in a second too. I'd also throw in Daye. I'd even take Sessions off their hands since it seems he isn't gonna be part of any long-term solution in Minnesota.
But it doesn't matter what you, Glenn, the dude who fixed my pc, the dude who billed me for it or even me thinks about this.
Joe's opinion is all that counts and he seems pretty happy with Stuckey.
