View Full Version : SI's Heyman: Tigs In Play For Johnny Damon?
Wilfredo Ledezma 01-15-2010, 12:10 AM Twitter...
#tigers could be in play for damon, who hits .363, slugs .550 and has a .961 OPS at pitcher-friendly comerica park.
Now this would be an interesting signing. Johnny reportedly lowered his asking price and he would be a tremendous fit in the 'tablesetter' role that Polanco has filled for the last few yrs, however with Damon you get more pop and a guy with 2 WS rings...
I doubt it happens, but I'd be all for it. He would obviously DH since his arm sucks, but who cares.
Jackson, CF
Damon, DH
Cabrera, 1B
Ordonez, RF
Guillen, LF
Inge, 3B
Sizemore, 2B
Laird, C
Everett, SS
Santiago, Avila, Thomas and Raburn round out the bench.

Glenn 01-15-2010, 08:04 AM I'd pass.
Hermy 01-15-2010, 08:37 AM Really would improve our team, damn shame we just went through so much effort to make it worse.
Glenn 01-15-2010, 09:03 AM If we are going to take a high-priced OF liability and make him our DH, it should be Magglio.
Wilfredo Ledezma 01-15-2010, 10:06 AM There'd be no long-term financial commitment with Damon, which is why I'd like this deal.
Wilfredo Ledezma 01-15-2010, 10:10 AM The Valverde signing (at least to me) means they want to contend this year (which I think they can do), but with so many offensive question marks (2B, CF, SS, C, 3B) and no everyday DH, we need offense BAD.
I'd rather invest in Johnny Damon, who'd fill the "fan favorite" void that was created by getting rid of Granderson & Polanco than sign a journeyman like Russ Branyan whose an all-or-nothing type hitter.
Part of me wishes we would've made a play at Vlad Guerrero to be our DH, since he would've come much cheaper and he's still a decent hitter. Troy Glaus could've worked too as a "buy-low" candidate, but both are gone.
Wilfredo Ledezma 01-15-2010, 10:13 AM Also, signing Damon could allow the team to sit Magglio a bit more often since once again, Maggs has escalators in his contract that could cause his option to vest for 2011.
The reason Leyland had to play Magglio last year was because he didn't have much roster flexibility in the OF (especially when Guillen missed the first 3 months of the yr).
So if you think about it, signing Damon could be a way to save a hell of alot of money for 2011 ($15 million).
Hermy 01-15-2010, 10:45 AM If we are going to take a high-priced OF liability and make him our DH, it should be Magglio.
He's a good outfielder, just has a noodle arm.
WTFchris 01-15-2010, 11:55 AM dont we have enough guys that should be DHing already? Maggs and Carlos dont belong in the field for 150+ games as it is.
Glenn 01-15-2010, 12:00 PM If you have a noodle arm, are you a good outfielder? Especially in a big ballpark?
WTFchris 01-15-2010, 12:08 PM No. It means that even if he chases down a ball everyone is going to convert sacrifices. Is .282 and 25 HR's what you want in a DH?
You can get that production out of Brad Hawpe. Trust me, Colorado won't keep him because they had two good young OF's develop this year while guys were hurt. I'd rather have him than Damon. He's a better fielder than Maggs too, so you can DH Maggs for the most part (and maybe some of his power will come back).
Hermy 01-15-2010, 12:26 PM If you have a noodle arm, are you a good outfielder? Especially in a big ballpark?
How many runners did our LF throw out last year trying to score? I remember Clete had a few in RF. Just not that big a deal.
Vinny 01-15-2010, 04:29 PM How many runners did our LF throw out last year trying to score? I remember Clete had a few in RF. Just not that big a deal.
Yeah but alot more may try if Damon's out there.
Vinny 01-15-2010, 04:32 PM No. It means that even if he chases down a ball everyone is going to convert sacrifices. Is .282 and 25 HR's what you want in a DH?
And no way he hits 25 in Comerica. I'd say 15 or so tops.
MoTown 01-16-2010, 02:48 PM So... quick question:
DOES DUMBROWSKI HAVE A PLAN OR IS HE JUST PLAYING WITH A OUIJA BOARD?!?!?!
WTFchris 01-19-2010, 02:25 PM And no way he hits 25 in Comerica. I'd say 15 or so tops.
He hit 17 of his 24 HR's in Yankee stadium into the jetstream in RF.
WTFchris 01-19-2010, 02:27 PM I'd rather give Delgado a 1 year deal to DH for us.
Glenn 01-27-2010, 04:37 PM Sounds like he might go to Tampa.
Wilfredo Ledezma 01-28-2010, 09:54 AM The market is dwindling for Damon, if we can get him on a cheap 1 yr deal worth no more than $8m, I'd pull the trigger.
Same goes for Orlando Hudson.
Glenn 02-01-2010, 04:56 PM Report: Agent Scott Boras says ex-New York Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon has eye on Detroit Tigers
Tahoe 02-01-2010, 05:08 PM Hey Johnny, we'll be waiting here at the alter.
Actually, I'm not sure that'd be the case, but a possibility nonetheless.
WTFchris 02-01-2010, 05:45 PM If he's on a 1 year deal (and it didn't cause us to go cheap on Verlander) I suppose I could live with it. Otherwise no thanks.
WTFchris 02-03-2010, 02:11 PM This is interesting:
Damon has a .363 batting average, .412 on-base percentage and .961 on-base and slugging percentage at Comerica Park. Those are his career highs in all three categories at any American League ballpark.
Last year he had 3 hits in 13 ABs at Comerica.
Starters were Verlander, Jackson and Porcello though.
Glenn 02-03-2010, 02:36 PM Tigers dancing the tango over free agent Johnny Damon (http://blog.mlive.com/cutoffman/2010/02/tigers_dancing_the_tango_over.html)
WTFchris 02-03-2010, 02:46 PM Damon screwed himself out of a lot of money. I'd take him on a 1 year deal though provided it doesn't keep us from paying Verlander.
WTFchris 02-10-2010, 02:36 PM Damon is a Wings/Yzerman fan I guess:

MoTown 02-12-2010, 06:55 PM These Johnny Damon negotiations are ridiculous. I think DD is part Peter Griffin.
Damon: I'd love to play for you.
Dumbrowski: Not interested.
Damon: I love greek people and octopi.
Dumbrowski: I'll think about it.
Damon: I love Eminem.
Dumbrowski: Howabout $2 million for one year?
Damon: Well the Braves were going to offer me $5mil. I don't really like the ATL, though.
Dumbrowski: FINE. 2 years, $14 million. Damn I'm good.
Zekyl 02-13-2010, 02:15 PM So I should hire that big-toothed salesman as an agent and get a $15m deal from the Tigers? Is that what you're saying, Mo?
MoTown 02-13-2010, 05:58 PM Did I mention the tank's a tank?

BubblesTheLion 02-13-2010, 06:28 PM Yeah but alot more may try if Damon's out there.
Ok, think of it this way. Say you have someone with an excellent arm otu there, the outfield is STILL HUGE , so that advantage gets neutralized. Might as well have a noodle arm, because that sac is coming home anyway.
Big Park get good fielders. Small park get big arms. General Rule
Hermy 02-13-2010, 07:05 PM Who led the league in OF assists last year?
Tahoe 02-13-2010, 07:40 PM ^ Batman?
MoTown 02-13-2010, 09:40 PM I'm pretty sure it was Bobby Higginson, but I'm not 100% on that.
Tahoe 02-13-2010, 09:42 PM I'm pretty sure it was Bobby 'Batman' Higginson, but I'm not 100% on that.
:motown owns:
MoTown 02-13-2010, 09:47 PM ^No shit? I had no idea that's who you were referring to.
Tahoe 02-13-2010, 09:48 PM ^ If you said it, its true, damn it.
MoTown 02-13-2010, 09:49 PM I like your style
Zekyl 02-15-2010, 09:31 PM I'm pretty sure it was Bobby Higginson, but I'm not 100% on that.
Insensitive. He's got a family history of making over $11m while hitting under .240
Wait, is that not how this insensitive thing works?
Glenn 02-19-2010, 05:16 PM Chicago White Sox pull offer for free-agent OF Johnny Damon - ESPN Chicago http://bit.ly/brFq24
Glenn 02-19-2010, 05:53 PM DD just confirmed that he has made Damon a new offer.
MoTown 02-20-2010, 06:27 AM It better be for about $5 million cheaper.
Glenn 02-20-2010, 09:31 AM http://www.detnews.com/article/20100220/OPINION03/2200361/1265/SPORTS08/Tigers-suddenly-chatty-about-Johnny-Damon
Glenn 02-20-2010, 08:05 PM Tigers signed him for 1 year.
Tahoe 02-20-2010, 08:20 PM Interesting.
After reading the article you posted...I wonder why DD came out the other day and talked about the offer. Was Boras not telling Damon?
Its interesting that he has signed after DD did that.
Glenn 02-20-2010, 09:47 PM 8 mil
Vinny 02-20-2010, 10:40 PM Yikes, that's about $3 Million too much but at least it's not 2/$14.

MoTown 02-28-2010, 06:16 PM Hey guys what's this I hear about the Tigers potentially looking to sign Johnny Damon?
Tahoe 02-28-2010, 09:53 PM They should have signed him when he was a FA the last time. Tigs GM should have got rid of some of the contracts/players on the roster so they could have signed him.
The GM could have rid themselves of ??? forgot the players back then, but they could have done it.
I think I should start another thread to discuss this.
Glenn 03-15-2010, 10:39 AM Tigers Johnny Damon wants to play for Rays (http://www.tampabay.com/sports/baseball/rays/tampa-bay-rays-pitcher-jeff-niemann-looks-comfortable-throwing-curveball/1079880)
Johnny Damon would still like the opportunity to play for the Rays. It was just that this year he decided the opportunity was better with the Tigers, who gave him a one-year, $8 million contract. Damon said location was part of his decision. He wasn’t particularly comfortable playing rightfield (which is all the Rays had open), and he liked the idea of “taking a year off” from the daily grind of the AL East. (Plus Detroit’s Lakeland spring base allows him to commute from his Orlando-area home.) Damon also had some concern over the Rays’ payroll situation. But he sounds as if he’ll be watching closely and, perhaps, eyeing the chance to replace LF Carl Crawford if he leaves via free agency. “I knew they had some issues with what’s going to happen with Crawford and (Carlos) Peña, what’s going to happen with the payroll, all that stuff. I kinda felt like they had to get off to a great start, if not things could change,” Damon said. “I do love that organization. I probably am going to be rooting for them as soon as my playing days are over. And there’s still a chance in the future.” — St. Petersburg Times
