I blame Kstat, btw. He obviously didn't want anyone posting anything negative about the Pistons after another loss.

True Story:
When the site went down last night I hadn't been paying much attention to the game and the first thing that popped into my head when it wouldn't load was that the Pistons must have won 105-87.

I'm on another forum that got hacked and deleted a couple weeks ago. That was the first thing that I thought of.

Hi all, here's what happened:

Our forum software caused a spike in server resources which caused our webhost to temporarily block our account. We've worked with them to re-enable our account and we've applied a bunch of security and software patches/updates. We hope that this won't happen again and we'll continue looking at ways to improve.

no, i think it was more software gone wild sort of thing. the security updates were done since we were updating anyways.

What server resources? Was it a bandwidth thing, or exploding disk space, or spinning CPU usage, or what? Was the bug ever identified, or was it just easier to upgrade and see if it fixed?

My first thought was that internecine warfare in the syndicate had left them all dead. Glad I was wrong and welcome back.

I think it just means you don't have to worry about his wedge.

Welcome back, everyone.

Sorry about the site issues, gents.

There's really no reason to go into a lengthy explanation other than to say we got hosed by the webhost when they moved our database to a "better" server without making a backup, first.

I think you can figure out the rest.

We'll be looking into daily, automatic backups, ASAP.

Special thanks to Matt & MOLA1 for putting up with my constant Twitter DMs.

If the site ever has issues again, head to the WTFDetroit Twitter feed for updates.

First thing that you'll probably notice is that the database that we used to restore the site is from April 3, 2010, it's the most recent we have, sorry.

Let us know if you discover any issues, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we put things back together.

When should I expect this site to go down again? It's gone down what 3 times since we started back in 05

Tahoe
01-10-2011, 12:03 AM
I'm able to view about 3 pages and then it times out. Maybe the db wasn't completely decompressed and its waiting for files to open? Or is the db waiting for memory allocation? Its happened about 5 times so far. Maybe its on my end, but thought I'd mention it.

So we're on a shared server, and the host is offering/suggesting to migrate us over to another that has more available resources.

I reminded them of what happened last time they migrated our data and they understand that we wouldn't want to experience that again, so they say they are going to try to convince some of the other clients on the same server to migrate off of ours.

Moving us over would be the quickest solution, but we know that there is risk involved.

So that's where we are.

Who is the host, if you don't mind?

I recently migrated my site off a shared host to a VPS. It's still technically shared of course, but there's a much better guarantee for server resources that way. Same company, and the site is much faster (I also migrated to an entirely different programming language too, so that could have something to do with it lol). I pay a whopping $12/mo for a server that can fly through gigs of db data in hundredths of a second. I've been messing with Amazon's EC2 a lot lately too - if you pay up front for a 3 year plan on a reserved instance, you can get some ridiculously cheap servers that are pretty quick from my testing. I don't know what your plan looks like now, but for about $10/mo on EC2 you can run a dedicated PHP server and a dedicated SQL server. Amazon's S3 storage is also stupid cheap, and then you don't have to worry about losing the db again.

Just my quick thoughts, again ;)

Glenn
05-31-2011, 08:29 AM
I have check the host machine out and improved resources for performance, so far this morning the sites I'm testing are responding just fine. If you have additional problems let us know as quickly as you can so we can try and duplicate the issue. Make sure you tell us if you are able to access the site and it is slow or not at all. A trace route is also nice to have if you are able to send in the results of that as well.

Glenn
06-01-2011, 07:01 PM
Okay, how do I send these fucks the trace route they are asking for?

Is it as simple as just running it from DNStools or a similar site and copy/pasting/sending the results?

What was going wrong?

Glenn
09-26-2011, 09:32 AM
We were testing different registration options in an attempt to improve the screening out of spammers and spambots.

Matt found some other issues/problems along the way and we ended up with some dns issues and had to wait for the IP to re-propagate.

Or something like that.

Glenn

We should probably come up with a "Matt owns" emoticon.
