View Full Version : Source: Tigers/Yankees/DBacks agree to trade (Granderson & Jackson) Glenn 12-08-2009, 01:51 PM teams in agreement on trade. assuming medicals check out, it's a go. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-08-2009, 01:51 PM It's not this move that help us win the Central. It will be the moves that follow this offseason. I don't see how they make this deal if they weren't intent on making other significant moves before the spring. I'm convinced. Granderson was due to make $5.5M this yr and Jackson would've made about as much via arb. That gives them $10M to play with that they already had allocated before Lyon, Rodney, and Polanco all walked. Scherzer will make around $2M, Coke will make $400K, Schlereth & A-Jax won't affect payroll. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-08-2009, 01:52 PM Heyman tweets that an agreement has been reached, with only medicals pending. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-08-2009, 01:53 PM Wow. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-08-2009, 01:55 PM Winter Meetings have been more exciting then the playoffs. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-08-2009, 02:00 PM found this on a Yankees blog... Austin Jackson is a RH hitting Curtis Granderson Fool 12-08-2009, 02:03 PM He can't hit lefties either? Glenn 12-08-2009, 02:24 PM Love the trade!! Illitch did with Curtis what Dumars should have done with Prince! Great move!! Glenn 12-08-2009, 02:26 PM Key to completing deal this morn was Tigers OKing Yanks removal of Dunn from package and limiting to 3 prospects for Granderson. 3 teams were at this since GM Meetings. Tigers initially insisted Hughes or Joba had to be part of deal, which was no-go for Yankees. Fool 12-08-2009, 02:28 PM Muhme was actually trying to post that on here but got lost and ended up on twitter. Glenn 12-08-2009, 03:26 PM I hope that no one here jinxes this trade! b-diddy 12-08-2009, 03:26 PM pleased with this deal. two facts to come to grips with: 1) we werent contenders in the short term. 2) our payroll didnt make sense for the product we have. i have no problem with scrapping payroll and regrouping for the next one. granderson and jackson were two good players with reasonable salaries, so it's sort of strange. but jackson was a mediocre pitcher in the 2nd half. plus, he wont be cheep forever unless he sucks. granderson also is frustrating the way he's digressed the last two years. heres something from the freep: Coke was 4-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 72 relief appearances. While he pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in the AL playoffs, he gave up two runs over 1 1/3 innings in the World Series. Austin Jackson, 22, is considered one of the Yankees’ top prospects. He hit .300 last season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with 23 doubles, four homers, 65 RBIs and 24 steals. Scherzer, the 11th overall pick in the 2006 amateur draft, is a 25-year-old righty who went 9-11 with a 4.12 ERA in 30 starts for Arizona last season, striking out 174 in 170 1/3 innings. Schlereth, a 23-year-old lefty, was the 26th pick in the 2008 amateur draft. He made his major league debut this year and went 1-4 with a 5.89 ERA in 21 relief appearances with 22 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings. sounds like a good haul to me. this is, unfortunately, the outcome of a series of bad bets made by dombrowski since the WS run. but atleast he's finally starting to fix it. DE 12-08-2009, 04:00 PM I suck at the virtual GM stuff so, even if this is a good trade, it still bums me out a bit. Granderson was one of my favorite Tigers. A good player who plays hard and tries to represent the D he wears while at the same time being good to the community is always a player I hate to see go. Let alone to the Yankees. Not that I disagree that they were calculated risks, but they were also some bone-headed moves on DD's part that forced this. It's just not usually a great move to try to load up a team all at once let alone throw tons of money at it. WTFchris 12-08-2009, 04:01 PM So why isn't the actual trade posted in here at the beginning though we have all this analysis? Is it even official? Glenn 12-08-2009, 04:30 PM Yankees get something for nearly nothing. Granderson deal a steal. 1050espn.com lol WTFchris 12-08-2009, 05:44 PM I really liked Granderson, but if he's going to turn into Inge at the plate he's not worth 10 mil a year. WTFchris 12-08-2009, 05:52 PM Tigers got the better of Granderson deal Tuesday, December 8, 2009 | Feedback (http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/mailbagESPN?event_id=15332) | Print Entry (http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=4725306&type=blogEntry) The Detroit Tigers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=det) come out the winner in this nearly completed three-team deal (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4725108) despite trading the two biggest names in the deal. They would acquire two power arms from the Arizona Diamondbacks (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=ari), as well as an inexpensive everyday centerfielder. Max Scherzer (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28976) was better in 2009 than Edwin Jackson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5842), with roughly the same velocity but more fastball life and a better slider. His delivery is rough and he's had shoulder problems on and off since college, but he hasn't yet had a serious injury and should stay in Detroit's rotation until those recur; if he's forced to the bullpen eventually, which I think is likely, he has the makings of a top-tier closer between his two plus pitches and a very aggressive approach. Lefty Dan Schlereth has a similarly violent delivery and had Tommy John surgery in college, but he has two plus pitches in his fastball and hard curveball (although it was harder in college and more slider-like), and he showed adequate control in a tiny major league sample. From the Yankees, the Tigers would get a middle reliever in lefty Phil Coke (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=29235), who had fringy stuff as a minor league starter but could help them as a second lefty from the 'pen, and an inexpensive everyday center fielder in Austin Jackson. Jackson is a good-but-not-great athlete. He's an above-average runner, but not a burner; he's wiry, but the power that has been projected has yet to materialize. His game played up in the low minors because he controlled the strike zone well for a young, inexperienced hitter. His plate discipline has gotten worse as he's risen the ladder, and he may need a few years in the majors before he'll post acceptable OBPs. But he can handle center field defensively and should produce enough at the plate to be an asset even in 2010, during which he'd earn the minimum salary. The Yankees also would come out ahead simply for not giving up much value in exchange for an above-average everyday center fielder. Curtis Granderson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6125) is a good defensive center fielder who hits right-handers well, is a plus runner and gets unanimous raves for his personality. In two of the last three years, however, he hasn't cracked a .500 OPS against left-handed pitchers. His pitch recognition problems against southpaws look like they'll be very hard to correct, meaning that the Yankees need to consider a right-handed-hitting center fielder to caddy for him against at least good left-handed starters. That (hypothetical) two-headed monster would be among the better center-field solutions in the American League. It's good they got Granderson for Jackson, who right now projects as more of an average everyday center fielder; Coke, a middle reliever who had lost Joe Girardi (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2139)'s trust anyway; and Ian Kennedy (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28864), who at the very least wasn't going to crack the Yankees' rotation again. Should be noted: Granderson is due $25.75 million over the next three years, including the 2013 buyout. I have no idea what Arizona's motivation for this deal would be. Even with my long-standing concerns over Scherzer's delivery and on-and-off shoulder problems, I would rather have five years of his services than two years of Jackson's, since Jackson, despite the hot 2009 start and All-Star appearance, remains a back-end pitcher with No. 1 starter stuff -- but No. 5 starter command. He will light up the gun -- I saw him hit 99 mph twice in the seventh inning of a start in September of 2008 -- and he looks the part of a dominating staff ace, but he doesn't miss anywhere near enough bats with the fastball, which is pretty straight and which he tries to throw up in the zone too often. His 2009 first half was the anomaly, as his slider got worse as the season went on, and his second-half fade (.290/.356/.500 line for opponents, yielding a 5.07 ERA) was much more in line with his career norms. He's also a fly ball pitcher moving to a pretty good home run park, as is Ian Kennedy, a fringe fifth starter whose command is above average but has to be plus (or better) for his fringe-fastball/average-changeup combination to work in the big leagues. (I liked Kennedy coming into 2008, but overrated his command.) Giving up five years of Scherzer and six of Schlereth is too much given what's coming back, especially for a club that's in more of a building mode than in immediate contention. shags 12-08-2009, 06:58 PM For what it's worth, Kruk loved this deal for the Tigers as well, and thought they added 4 pieces to keep them in contention for the division. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-08-2009, 07:10 PM Well the division isn't that great, but I think if the season started tomorrow we'd be picked 3rd behind Minnesota & Chicago. We are stil better than both Cleveland and Kansas City MoTown 12-08-2009, 07:38 PM There is not a big enough font to express how angry/bummed I am about this deal. Fuck this. Fuck it. Max Scherzer (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/pecota/scherma01.php), a 25-year-old right-hander, was taken by Arizona as the 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft. Daniel Schlereth (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/pecota/SCHLERETH19860509A.php), a 23-year-old left-hander, was the 26th overall pick in 2008. Each possesses a high ceiling, and few people have a better understanding of their potential than D-Backs manager A.J. Hinch (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/hinchaj01.php), who served as the organization’s Director of Player Development prior to this past May. Hinch wasn’t willing to discuss the rumored deal when he met with the media earlier this afternoon, but he was willing to weigh in on the development of the two young pitchers. Hinch Max Scherzer: “Max’s progression is…he’s good. Starting off in the bullpen, when he first got to the big leagues, and getting through that year — then, this past year, he got up to 170 innings, and for a young starter, that was a nice leap for him. We had tried really hard to get him to his innings total. The year before, we sent him to the Arizona Fall League to increase his innings total. So, he went from somewhere in the 130s to 170 last year, and had a very good year. If you toss out a start or two that imploded on him, he was a bonafide guy for us. We like him. He’s a guy that has room to grow, and he took some steps forward this year.” Hinch on what Scherzer needs to do to take that next step: “I think he’s always worked on a third pitch; he’s always worked on incorporating secondary stuff and being able to utilize that as a full, three-or-four-times-through-the-order starter. Being able to pitch deeper into games is important for him as a next step, and we think he’s going to do that. He’s a hard worker who has some competitiveness to him. He’s a good, young starting pitcher in the big leagues.” Hinch on Daniel Schlereth: “Schlereth has had a pretty rapid rise through the minors. He’s got some plus stuff that he’s shown in flashes when he got his big league opportunity. He didn’t have a ton of experience through the minor leagues, but in the short time we saw him in the big leagues, he was effective at times. He also struggled at times, which was really based on command. Obviously, as a power-pitching lefty, you usually get quite a few command issues at times, but you also get some strikeouts and swings and misses. There’s a lot to like there.” Timone 12-09-2009, 12:33 PM Those of you that liked the deal for the Tigers should reconsider. NBA analyst Jalen Rose likes it for the Yankees. Glenn 12-09-2009, 12:36 PM Granderson little overrated at plate, in cf. Great catches, misjudged flies. 30 homers, declining average, on base. But good deal for NYY. I found this amusing for some reason. WTFchris 12-09-2009, 03:08 PM Yeah, Grandy has definite holes in his game. Why hasn't he learned to steal 40-50 bases a year with his speed? He's not really well suited to the leadoff spot. He's more of a power hitter in the bottom middle of the order. I bet he'll get good HR numbers in NY though with that shit stadium design. Glenn 12-10-2009, 01:48 PM Just saw something in the Freep that said the Tigers may try Coke as a starter. MoTown 12-10-2009, 02:40 PM Coke is a helluva drug. MoTown 12-11-2009, 04:36 PM ^insensitive Tahoe 01-31-2010, 04:31 PM The Tigers by far got the best end of this deal. Seeking to shed payroll, fill in some bullpen holes, and acquire cheap, young talent, the Tigers traded away one of the games best value players (Granderson) who plays a mean CF in terms of both offense and defense, in addition to a soon-to-be 27 year old hard-throwing right-handed SP (Jackson) who over-performed last year and generally has below average, but improving control, no strikeout talent and two years left until he reaches free agency. In exchange, the Tigers received four quality players and met each of their goals. The prize of the Tigers’ acquisition was Max Scherzer, a soon-to-be 26 year old, hard-throwing right-handed SP (Scherzer) with high strikeout talent, above-average control and three, possibly four, more years of team control before he becomes arbitration eligible. If Scherzer does not qualify for super-two status next offseason, the Tigers will end up paying a better-than-Jackson SP less than $1 million, while Jackson probably makes at least $10 million over that same time frame. In addition to Scherzer, the Tigers also acquired two relievers: Phil Coke, a solid and above average RP who limited the walks and struck out more batters than the league average while playing in the AL East last year, from the Yankees and Daniel Schlereth, a closer-of-the-future kind of RP with great stuff and questionable control, from the Diamondbacks. Considering that Lyons and Rodney are free agents, this gives the team more leverage when dealing with Brandon Lyon and a viable set of cheap, late-inning relievers for the Tigers. The Tigers also got Austin Jackson, one of the Yankee’s top prospects, who profiles as a league-average (or better) hitting CF with great speed and range to replace Granderson. At just 22 years old, Jackson has a lot of upside and 6 years of major league control left to his name. Conclusion: The Tigers accomplished everyone of their team’s goals with this trade. They shed payroll, replaced semi-expensive players with cheap replacements, filled bullpen holes and upgraded their starting rotation. Tahoe 01-31-2010, 04:32 PM ^ lil late but wtf |
