Police mum regarding Rather Hall altercation
By Brittany Shammas
(Last updated: 12 hours ago)

Police and university officials were tight-lipped Monday about what witnesses have described as a multiple-person assault that happened at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday in the Rather Hall lounge.

Witnesses and students involved in the incident said a group of 15 to 20 men, who some described as MSU football players, stormed into the dormitory and hit and injured about seven students, some of them women.

Brent Mitchell, a communication junior who said he was sent to Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital after being punched in the face, said some of the men wore ski masks, but others were recognized as football team members.

“I walked up and said, ‘It isn’t worth it.’ A guy with dreadlocks hit me and in the scuffle slapped, hit females to get them out of the way,” Mitchell said.

MSU police directed all questions regarding the incident to University Relations, which issued a statement saying police were investigating an altercation involving several people. MSU spokesman Terry Denbow said the fight involved multiple victims and suspects.

MSU associate athletics director John Lewandowski said questions about the incident should be directed to Denbow.

Denbow said he was not aware of any arrests and did not know further details about injuries sustained by those involved.

“Investigation is continuing,” he said. “I can’t go beyond that.”

He would not comment on whether the men involved were members of the football team.

“It’s always my policy not to identify people by any activity they are involved in,” he said. “You wouldn’t say members of debate team or Sigma Chi. It’s important to be consistent.”

Mitchell said members of his fraternity, Iota Phi Theta, had just finished a potluck event and were folding chairs in the lounge when the men entered. The men said they were looking for a man who had been involved in a spat with one of them the night before during an Iota Phi Theta event at The Small Planet, 16800 Chandler Road, Mitchell said.

Mitchell said he was struck after the men realized the person they sought wasn’t there. He said the altercation lasted for about a minute before the men left.

Mechanical engineering sophomore Andrew Green said he saw one of the men hit another student on his way out.

“He was coming downstairs and looked at him and punched him in the jaw,” Green said.

Journalism freshman Mitch Lex said he entered the lounge as police arrived. About eight police officers were in the lobby and blood was on the floor, Lex said. Before bystanders were asked to leave, Lex said he saw one injured man.

“There was some medic treating this kid sitting in lounge area,” he said. “It looked like he had a baseball in his cheek.”

Mitchell said, above all, he was upset the event symbolizing the end of a week of community service ended with violence.

“Physically, I’m okay,” he said. “But I’m just saddened that (the event) ended the way it did.”

Report: Up to 20 Michigan State players 'stormed' dorm in bloody attack on students, including women. http://bit.ly/90pgKs

I wonder if they were wearing their costumes from '300'?

Additionally, I’ve been told that there is video of the incident which could go a long way to determining if Michigan State football players were indeed involved.

UPDATE: The Detroit Free Press (http://www.freep.com/article/20091124/SPORTS07/91124039/1322/Report-MSU-football-players-involved-in-assault) and Detroit News (http://www.detnews.com/article/20091124/SPORTS0202/911240408/1361/MSU-football-players-assaulted-students--witnesses-tell-newspaper) are now catching up to the story.

I am on record saying any football player, basketball player, soccer player or any MSU athelete involved in this should be kicked off whatever team they are on. Period. No extenuating circumstances, no hard-luck childhood bullshit. Gone.

I agree with bukky?

Anyway... I hate pussy mentality like this. No way 20 guys were going there so 19 guys could make sure the 20th got a fair shot at the target. I would make a point about maybe the guy decked a girl or something in which case maybe a 3 guy beatdown would be understandable, but apparantly they don't care about that either.

I am on record saying that if there are more than 21 football players involved in this, I'll run out of fingers to count them all. So I hope there are only 21 players involved in this. WAIT! I can use the puss bumps on my face to count more of them! Wow, thank Gourd my father and sister are my father and mother!

attorneys (i forget who's) were in the paper today saying they have strong evidence that there was 15 spartan football players involved in the melee. how's dantonio's decision to let winston get out of jail and join the team unpunnished look now? dantonio should absolutely be fired. but then again, THIS IS SPARTA!!!!

8 more players have been "suspeneded indefinitely" while the cops search for 5 other people that were involved. Not sure if any of them are football players or not so this might not be done quite yet.

I hate when things like this happen, but is there anything more delicious than the implosions that MSU goes through?

Over the last two years the following has happened (and I admit some of this might be made up by me in order to prove my point--a point which I'll think of by the end of this post):

Michigan's football team has had its most embarrassing two-year run since anyone can remember.

Rich Rodriguez has been raked over the coals for, well, pretty much absolutely no reason.

Sparty has been handed the keys to the state of Michigan, has been the media darling, and were coming into this season off a pretty solid two year run to begin the Dantonio Era. Many, MANY were expecting them to do at least as well as last year, if not hit double-digit wins.

bukdow finally got his big break and starred in several hard core gay porn movies and was voted "Rookie Catcher of the Year" at the recent Porn Movie Awards.

ALL THIS

And MSU flops faster than Tiger Woods' marriage.

I'm loving this. Dantonio needs to kick the Fightin' Fifteen off the team immediately, because guess the fuck what? This is the second year in a row this exact thing has happened. The guy is a thug, his attitude is total assholery. The team is a reflection of him.

That's alls I have to say about this. Dantonio is a true Michigan State Man.

I will absolutely eat crow if I'm wrong, but there is NO chance that Cunningham, Rucker, Legget, Dell and Johnson are kicked off this team. I don't know how you only kick off some of the players, but I see no way in which all of the players are kicked off the team.

I agree the fifteen players involved should be gone. Considering some are big contributors, their dimissal would negatively effect the team for 1-2 years. Ah well. This whole ski mask shit is ridiculous.

However, I hardly think Dantonio is a thug. His Father Flannigan shit may get a little much sometimes, but not a thug. A Catholic, but not a thug. Seriously, when looking at the 15 knuckleheads involved, the only ones you could see doing something like this were Winston, Jenrette and Johnson. They all had that "baggy-pants, bad-ass" bullshit about them. The others seemed like regular half-retarded football players. Nonetheless, all need to be shown the way to Alcorn State.

It's awesome how they start out emphasizing that Dell lied, and then all of the players lied to Dantonio. Then they focus on Dell swearing that there were "absolutely no ski masks".

"Well, you haven't given us any reason to doubt your word, so okay..."

It is now being reported that there were indeed ski maks, but they were not trying to hide their identities. You see they were apparently the type of ski masks that a snowmobiler might wear that shows your eyes which many at MSU including Mods believe means they were not trying to hide their identity.

This thing has managed to get unbelievably comical and I really hope that this doesn't affect D'Antoni's job status or anything stupid like that, but this has grown from a small bruise into a major black eye and the best part is that it's not over yet which is awesome!!!

Well, to answer your question, Michigan fans like it when bad things happen to Michigan State and would like bad things to continue to happen to Michigan State. I know this is completely foreign to the Spartan code that strictly states "we must always hope for the best for our friends in Ann Arbor, and if, heaven forbid, anything of ill repute should fall upon them, we shall pray for it to pass quickly"

Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Charles Rogers was arrested again Tuesday (http://detroitnews.com/article/20100106/METRO/1060327/Ex-Lion-Rogers-arrested-again) after passing out a Mexican restaurant from drinking too much, police confirmed.

Employees at the On the Border restaurant in Novi (it's lovely) were unable to rouse Rogers awake after he fell asleep in his seat at 3:15 p.m. He was rushed to the hospital as employees were concerned he may have suffered a heart attack.

Rogers was arrested on suspicion of failing to fulfill his probation in a Sobriety Court program.

The onetime Michigan State standout has had a litany of legal issues since 2003, when he was drafted with the second overall pick.

WOW, I am shocked that the 8 "good" players (okay 7) were reinstated while Leggett transferred and three guys that were nothing more than depth guys were booted off the team. When you add these 8 guys back into the mix with Jones, who is staying, the two QB's and two RB's and this team should right in the mix with Wisconsin for 3rd place behind O$U and Iowa.

2 more Sparties??? If Oren Wilson is allowed to stay on this team it would be possibly one of the best jokes every played. When Dantoni stood up in front of the team and asked if anyone else was responsible he sat there while his teammates all took their lumps and he played and started the Alamo Bowl. I know that the coaches weren't there and you can NEVER control all 120+ kids in your program, but when do you just say enough and make it stop?
