I’ll be interested to watch Prince early this season to see if he’s still capable of being a shut-down perimeter defender.

He's an above average perimeter defender. Not shut down though. Although, there are very few of those anyway. Probably no more than a half dozen in a given year (at least regular rotation players that is).

He's too lazy to be a shut down defender now. He was a "true" shut down defender 2003-2005. Not since then.

I think he's a good defender, but "shut-down perimeter defender" is all kinds of a stretch.

I would go with "above average" at this point. He has the ability to prove me wrong.

Langlois has the ability to shut-down people's browsers.

Too lazy? The man was top 10 in minutes played last year.

This may be the first year he has a playoff-rotation level backup at his position in years. I'd love to see what he's like as a defender when he's not playing burnout minutes beyond his means.

The fact that the guy cares about and takes pride in his defense is good enough for me. Now is he worth his contract? That's a separate discussion, IMO.

I think it's very telling that your definition of Tay being a "shut-down" defender coincides with the "larry brown" era, when Ben Wallace was the most dominant help-defender in the league, and the year (2005) preceding the Flip Saunder's era of not playing Ben Wallace in the 4th quarter of games because he can't hit a jump shot.

Hmmm....

depends on the matchup.

He could shut down Flip Murray.

True. I don't mean lazy in the sense that he doesn't care, but he doesn't have the same look to him when he's playing D. I do think some of it has to do with the change in the defensive rules back in 2005, but I think in the back of Tay's mind he knows that he has too many other responsibilities to kill himself on D every posession like he did back in the early years.

When Tayshaun wears down, his D is in the tank. He loses even a half step due to wear and his sweet spot, using his length to contain wings roughly his size or smaller, goes away. He can't make the beefier wings work for it when he's worn down. He should play 30-32 mpg tops, and have a credible backup who gives the opposing offense a different look.

For that matter, I'm somewhat concerned that Summers doesn't seem to be shaping up as a rotation player. Daye and Jerebko seem more like PFs.

I agree...

When he gets to guard another teams SG hes capable of being lockdown.

When he has to go up against Pierce, LeBron or other elite 3-guards around the league, he's avg at best.

I don't consider him a lockdown defender.

He's still quality though.

Expecting him to shutdown Pierce, Lebron and a few other superstars is unrealistic and if no one else in the league can do it why put shit on Prince cause he can't?

It's not like dudes are stopping Pierce and Lebron on the regular.

The only drama I have with Prince is that he's got a lot of miles on those tyres because Joe left him hanging out there too long.

Thank God we got him some help this season.
