So this thing kinda got by me, anybody care to recap/summarize it?

Letterman was being blackmailed by a producer from 48 Hours. He was living with one of Letterman's ex-gfs and obtained her diary. He threatened to write a tell-all about Letterman's sexual relationships with his staff members before he had his kid and got married, unless he was paid $2 million. Letterman worked with the cops to get the blackmailer, then presented his view of things on his show the day it happened. Laughter ensued.

The controversy(?) is that he slept around with his own staff members (possible sexual harassment), and cheated on his girlfriend (who he hooked up with in 1989, back when they were both NBC employees, prior to his own production company being formed). Thus far, no one that Letterman's ever slept with has complained publicly, filed suit, or anything like that. Dave either lucked out, or chose his ex-flings well -- take your pick.

Thanks.

So were these just affairs from a long time ago or were any of them recent? (post marriage, kid)

Letterman is a slut. An angry old man that uses being the big cheese and his money to get young ladies to sleep with him. He's a despicable human being through and through.

And now he somehow turned this around to act like he's the victim and 'some' are buying it.

Uncle Mxy

Reportedly, it was a long time ago. Note that the kid came long before the marriage. He's only been married a few months.

Wonder if the wife knew about it? <--And that question is prolly too much time to waste on this. He's a douche but the libs love him so he'll be fine.

You're making some ASSumptions now, aren't you?

Is he sleeping with the people who work for him because he's the rich boss, or because these are the people he's surrounded by all day? Why isn't Dave doing a LOT better in the woman department if money and power are driving things? Long ago, my boss's boss slept with his secretary. He hired well, and that boss was no David Letterman in terms of wealth and power.

Should a boss quit, or fire the person they want to ask on a date, right at the get-go? That's what strict adherence to sexual harassment law calls for, and it's often ridiculous in practice.

All those Ball State fucktards roll that way.

BTW, he's gone on record to say he leans to the right politically.

That or, you know, not date them. It's not ridiculous to restrict bosses from sleeping with the help.

Generally the target of a blackmail attempt is a victim. Unless they are or ever have been associated with anything liberal, then they're a despicable human being.

It's not just about sleeping with the help, but about any romantic interaction with the help whatsoever. Asking someone on a date equates to sexual harassment if you get the right judge.

Again, if the boss is working all the time and, as a consequence, just about the only folks they have any extended contact with are the help, what are their realistic options? This gets more complex if the job is (more-or-less) being some personality. To pick an extreme example, if you're a hottie who's working for Viagra Hef at Playboy Enterprises Inc., why shouldn't you be fired if you don't sleep with him? That's Hef being Hef, everyone is aware of the situation, and the hottie's just a part of Hef's team the same way that the cameraman and the rotating bed w/ Pepsi dispenser is. Maybe Letterman just wants to live up to the expectations of fans like Tahoe. :)

The boss working all the time is no excuse for using the secretarial pool as a singles club. People make sacrifices based on their own priorities. I'm sure there are plenty of women who could have Hef over a barrel if they chose to press charges against him.

He's an angry old man that has money and a lil bit of fame left with die hard libs cuz he bashed Bush. He used his money and lil bit of fame to get peeps making very lil money to have sex with him. Is that a crime? Not that I know of, but he is a despicable human being.

30 years with your own show on network television? I'd say "a lil" is underestimating it "a lil".

Letterman appologizes to wife, most likey in tears (again), on tonights show.

I can hear it already..."I've hurt my wife" boo hoo boo hoo [wipes eyes: adusts glasses] for effect.

The master manipulator will show up tonight again, I'm sure.

"I have work to do" wah wah wah and the libs eat it up cuz he bashed Bush.

Tahoe wants to make it out like Letterman has only lib fans because he was hard on the Beav, and no one actually likes him because he was the guy who introduced the world to Larry "Bud" Melman.

I was watching Letterman and Bud when you were in diapers, son.

He's just not funny anymore. He's just an angry white dude with too much money and lil bit of fame left. All he's about now is vitriolic statements, attacks on peeps like Palin's underaged daughter (since you brought it up).

He's become a steaming pile of shit.

I think it can get a little silly, that's all.

I've had a personal experience here.

I've been the boss, directing the activities for someone I was attracted to. At the time, I was in an office environment working 70 hours/week or so -- not much of a life. In fact, she was contracted because I literally couldn't take a vacation, and I was burning out. A sizable part of her appeal was that she was competent and understood what my (lack of) life was like at the time. Fortunately, after a few weeks, I came to realize that she was nuts and any temptation to date a subordinate co-worker went down to nil. I still had to deal with it from a different end. A couple other co-workers asked me if she was available, like I was her pimp or something. Sheesh!

I'm sure there are plenty of women who could have Hef over a barrel if they chose to press charges against him.
Hef's been with more gold-diggers than anyone can shake a stick at, and none of 'em have managed to do anything.

Letterman's ratings are up 38%, so I heard. Some TV shows would hire a blackmailer to get that kind of boost. A new apology is coming out tonight -- more ratings bonanza awaits!

A spokesman for Worldwide Pants, Letterman's production company, said the company's sexual harassment policy did not prohibit sexual relationships between managers and employees.

"We have a written policy in our employee manual that covers harassment," the spokesman said in a statement. "It is circulated to every employee every year. Dave is not in violation of our policy and no one has ever raised a complaint against him."

Even in the absence of any intentional exploitation (either way... and it can definitely go both ways) it's kind of unrealistic to expect boxes on an org chart to trump human nature in every instance. Chemistry happens.

Of course this issue breaks down along along purely liberal/conservative political lines... if you're mentally retarded. No disrespect to the mentally challenged. Or to people who see the world through red/blue glasses.

Letterman was famously sleeping with the head writer of his show a decade before Worldwide Pants was founded. I wouldn't be shocked that Worldwide Pants would have explicit wiggle room in their employee handbook for such affairs. Essentially, he wrote a blank check to any employee he ever slept with, and none are known to have ever exercised it, so I doubt there were formal complaints.

Anyone protesting Dave's bedroom antics with co-workers now should've protested them decades ago, back when he was funny.

Tahoe
10-06-2009, 01:00 PM
Back in the 80's he was the shit and into the 90s I think. We actually get together at someone's house to watch him.

He's just a shell of himself now. He used to be funny, now he's angry and political. So thats why a lot of peeps have stopped watching him.

Glenn
10-06-2009, 01:09 PM
I think people "stopped watching him" because less people are staying up until 12:30 am these days. And if they do want to watch the whole show, they'll tivo/DVR it.

That, and there are so many more entertainment choices these days (internet). If something noteworthy happens or if there is a guest you want to see, you can just look it up on YouTube the next day, no reason to watch anymore. In short, I don't think it's a "Dave" thing that his viewership is off from where it once was, I think it's a problem that is inherent with the late night television medium.

Just my opinion, though.

Big Swami

Wait, Letterman is angry now? LOL. Letterman has always been a maniac. During the 80's what made him funny is how pissed off he was that his show was so cheap and crappy.

There's no question that the dude has lost some of his edge after his heart thing. That's what happens to dudes. In fact, I'd say he's a lot less angry now.

Face it, Tahoe. You just don't like him because he's left of you. That's all there is to this, and if you admitted it, we'd all give you some Dude Credits.
