Good read about Urban Meyer and the perception/reality of the spread option's shortcomings, especially for players aspiring to the NFL.

"un-NFL" must be terminology that you learned at university.

Yeah, not the best phraseology. Nonetheless, the fact that the spread-option does not prepare kids for the NFL seems to be a fairly accepted notion. It works OK/well in college, but in the NFL its merely a gimmick, a la Mouse Davis.

Even in college, you still have to be able to physically control the line of scrimmage and must be able to run the ball in a balanced fashion.

Can't say that I disagree with that.

TO be fair though, that leaves a large pool of "non-nfl" talent players to pick from. Some of these guys were never going to be pro talents despite their physical gifts, they just don't fit the absolute mold.

Sure, but take a kid like Devin Gardner. He could be an NFL QB. However, the experience he is going to have at UM will do more to hinder his chances than anything.

No doubt. Surely why Pryor went OSU, thier hybrid O would be a much better learning enviroment than a true spread.

That said, Pat White did much, much better in the draft than anyone would have presumed 4 years ago.

Spread offense might be ahead of its time in the NFL.

It's simple: Do what you do better than anyone else and you win. As recently as 1997 Nebraska was running straight option and won and NC. And everybody else was passing.

99% of college football players don't make it in the NFL. That's a pretty hefty talent pool left over to pick from. And if Urban goes out and gets a dropback passer, he'll do it; if he sees a good spread QB that he feels he can be successful with, he'll get him. One thing is for sure: He has won 2 of the last three NC's playing spread option (the one Rich Rodriguez invented)--so he's being a bit disingenuous there.

Pro-style offenses have gotten MSU nowhere, for the record.

The flipside is that the gaudy numbers that players in these offenses put up oftentimes gets them drafted higher than they typically might have been, depending on position, of course.

I think bukdow is trying to make this into a racial argument. (a la Rush Limbaugh, Donovan McNabb)

Why is today the first time I've ever seen that? Maybe I don't pay attention enough because it's too good to have taken this long to find it.

It never ceases to amaze me the lengths some of you will go to defend anything that has a glimmer of maize and blue on it. Learn to accept some things, otherwise you end up looking like a fool. Are you really arguing against the fact that spread option players are less likely to get drafted/be prepared for the NFL?

Open a book, talk to somebody in the know, ANYTHING. Please!

Got them to two bowls (JLS's spread didn't). Got them some serious talent coming in. Got them ranked more than not last year. Got them wins in games they were "supposed to win" when other systems didn't in the past. Got them a better record than Michigan. Got them a win in the big house.

And they are two years and a game in idiot. "Wait until Dantonio gets his players!" LOL. Once again Michigan fans choose to ignore and discredit that which got them their "glorious history" that they love to tell us about.

Yeah Bukdow! Look at how high Graham Harrell and his 97 touchdowns were drafted!

Meanwhile cough Brian Hoyer (and his numbers) cough gets drafted and becomes the Pats #2 QB behind former Michigan Pro Style Qb Tom Brady.

I'm not going to lie, I envy Hoyer. He's probably got a few of Tom's ex girlfriends' numbers.
