Muneer (Troy, Mich.): ESPN said the Pistons are going to be the No. 10 seed in the East. Do you have an explanation for that?

Langlois: The East appears tightly bunched from 4 through 10 or 11, Muneer. After Cleveland, Boston and Orlando, there is a group of six or seven teams – Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Toronto and the Pistons – that are one emerging player or one injury away from a swing of several games that could determine whether they end up as the No. 4 seed or a few spots out of the playoff field. So I don’t think it’s any real slap at the Pistons. Many of those teams don’t have the same ceiling as the Pistons have, but they are perhaps safer bets simply because they haven’t experienced the degree of change as Detroit, which has added eight new players since last season ended. Those things are fun to read and discuss at this time of year because that’s all we’ve got, but they’re essentially meaningless. Does anybody remember where the Pistons were picked to finish in the East six years ago at this time? They wound up winning the NBA title.

I'm not buying Washington. Mike Miller doesn't solve any of their problems. Plus, no way Gilbert plays more than 60 games.

Where were we picked to finish that year?

10th sounds about right to me. I've never known so little about a coach as this one. I have no idea what to expect.

I'm thinking I have a bit of a problem with this.

Correct...I have an idea NOT to expect greatness.

It can't be worse than last year. I think that's the thing people aren't accounting for with the Pistons this season. Michael Curry was one of, if not the, worst coach in the league last season. Just replacing him with someone who may be not necessarily great, but just competent, has to count for something.

^^ You really underestimate the 12-bus pileup that was the 2008/9 Detroit Pistons. MC was one of the worst NBA coaches of all time. I was totally in grief last season. I had to focus on the presidential election in order to get joy out of seeing a black midwestern basketball player win something.
