View Full Version : movies that need sequels.
b-diddy 08-14-2009, 11:47 PM forget that sequels generally suck. what movie would you be psyched if you heard a sequel was coming out for.
one rule, movie cant already have /be a sequel.
Ill go first, Gladiator. Just watched it for the first time since it came out. liked it both times but this time I realized it isnt nearly as absurd as i had originally thought. a sequel would be tough, but maybe just a spiritual sequel could be cool.
Tahoe 08-14-2009, 11:52 PM ^ Great movie, but some are best left alone. Gladiator 'might' be one of them. If it came out, I'd definately go see it though.
I enjoyed the hell out of Life Aquatic for some reason. My bud and his wife watched it and couldn't even finish it. For me, I'd like to see a sequel.

Glengarry Glen Ross - Jack Lemmon is gone, but he was headed to jail at the end of the original anyways, so his absence could easily be explained

b-diddy 08-15-2009, 12:37 AM tahoe, dont take this the wrong way, but it looks like we have the same taste in movies, and that kind of shocks me.
heres another: Usual Suspects. that one would get some hype.

Glenn 08-15-2009, 02:18 PM I'd like to see more Fargo, and I think the storyline could sustain it. Actually, a lot of the Coen Bros. Stuff could be sequel fodder.
No Country for Old Men?

Usual Suspects is one of my favorites. Can't turn away when it comes on.

Who the fuck wouldn't watch a sequel to Big Lebowski? I read an article that said the Coen brothers were considering making a sequel, and focusing it around Jesus Quintana. Marijuana sales would go through the roof.

I'll get my broker on the phone to get my futures market orders in now.
Had a hiking trip to the Adirondacks this past week. When we came out we stopped at this general/touristy store. In the cooler was genuine article Sioux City Sarsaparilla. Had to buy it.
Zip Goshboots 08-16-2009, 10:09 AM No truly good movie needs or warrants a sequel. The truly good ones tell the whole story--and end, either tragically or happily. OR, they leave you to think about what might happen.
The energy of a truly good original can never be duplicated because it is always done for commercial reasons ONLY. A great example of that is "Pirates of the Carribean". Depp sleptwalk through the sequels to a fucking fantastic movie, and by the third, it was nothing more than a slapstick parody of itself. Generall, with good movies, there's no more story to tell, no "loose ends" to tie up. It can only take away from the impression the original left on you.
My only candidates for sequel would be off-beat British films that have so many twists, turns, and tangential plot lines. Or an American film such as "Sideways"--which is a fucking classic. Payne left you wanting more--but damnit, what more could he do?
Sorry, I hate to pee on the parade, but sequels generally do suck.
b-diddy 08-16-2009, 11:35 AM im not disagreeing, point is if you heard the sequel was coming out you wouldnt miss it. i guess the title to the thread is misleading, i wouldn't want most of these movies made (i agree on fadgo 2 / coen bros, though. they could pull it off. miller's crossing too).
Uncle Mxy 08-17-2009, 05:02 PM Some movies have an episodic quality to them, often a function of the source material. James Bond "sequels" are simply "more James Bond adventures" in a rich world inspired from the novels. There's enough to support some plotlines and alternate takes on the character in a cinematic fashion.
MoTown 08-17-2009, 08:48 PM I'm thinking District 9 might need a sequel. Good movie, but a sequel might be even more interesting...
Big Swami 08-18-2009, 08:57 AM When I first saw this thread I somehow read it as "movies that need squirrels" and I was excited because every movie needs more squirrels.
Pharaoh 08-18-2009, 09:01 AM For action movies I really like the idea of a sequel, or even better a trilogy.
The first movie is always the hardest, since you have to set up the characters, the plot, the motivation.
The second movie should just be all out shit hitting the fan kind of stuff.
The third movie should bring everything to it's end, no unfinished business.
The problem you face is that if you go for a trilogy the first movie could be boring cause you're busy setting everything up and you neglect the action and the third movie suffers due to there being "less" action than in part II as the story has to be resolved.
But I'm so tired of the villan explaining his "heelness" in a sentence. I wanna see the bad guy become the bad guy before he wrecks shop. What made him the evil fucker he's become? That's the real story IMO.

You've been talking with your dog too much, haven't you?
