View Full Version : Jonas Jerebko...if its that hard to say his name how will anybody defend him?
Kstat 06-26-2009, 12:58 PM I've heard about this kid before. Supposedly an AK47 clone that is raw offensively but has all the defensive tools and is an athletic freak at the 3/4.
The more I read about him, the more I wonder if Joe won't try to bring him over THIS year. I suppose it depends how good he looks in summer league.

WTFchris 06-26-2009, 01:19 PM Joe said all might be here this year. Who knows what kind of depth we'll have after FA/trades? Joe said (entering the draft) that he expects his draft picks to get PT this year.

Glenn 06-26-2009, 01:39 PM :langlois:
If you’d have told Joe Dumars and his staff before Thursday’s draft that they’d come to pick 35 with their choice of DaJuan Summers and Jonas Jerebko, they’d have been floored – and ecstatic. If you’d have told them they’d come away with both players, obtained at picks 35 and 39 – on top of getting Austin Daye at 15 – well, put it this way: Step One of the summer of major reconstruction could not have gone any better for them.
They went into Thursday night convinced both Summers and Jerebko – pronounced “YO-nus Yer-EB-ko” – would be off the board before the second round began.
LOL
Glenn 06-26-2009, 01:43 PM So if George David scouted Jerebko, what exactly does Tony Ronzone do these days?

Again.....both Jerebko and Summers are both NBA-ready players. That isn't spin.
Of course, it speaks to the fact they will probably both get more minutes than Daye next season.
Uncle Mxy 06-26-2009, 05:37 PM I thought Ronzone was backfilling Hammond, more or less.
Higherwarrior 06-26-2009, 06:20 PM jerebko was a guy i was calling for in the 2nd and i'm thrilled we got him. he could be a guy similar to the turk. and i just finished saying he looked taller than the 6-8 he is listed at, and i read this:
Pistons VP Scott Perry said when Jerebko worked out for the Pistons, he measured in at slightly better than 6-foot-10 and his athleticism stood out.
he looks really long and like he has a good wingspan. very excited about this kid.
Zekyl 06-26-2009, 08:44 PM Wow, slightly over 6'10" is a nice jump from 6'8". That's like going from a little taller than Kobe to Odom.
Glenn 07-13-2009, 09:55 AM Hannes (Stockholm, Sweden): What do you think about Jonas Jerebko playing center in Summer League? According to Darrell Walker, he is more of a power forward or center than a small forward, which I think is ridiculous. Not even in Italy did he play center. If the Pistons give Jonas a contract, they will gain a whole country of fans since they would make him the first Swedish player in the NBA.
Langloistat: It’s a pretty good bet that they’re going to keep him in Detroit, Hannes. That’s the plan, at least. I’m not sure Joe Dumars and his staff share Walker’s feelings that Jerebko is more of a four or five than a three, but the real reason he was playing him at center was to give all three of their draft choices playing time and Jerebko was best suited to the task. As for gaining Sweden as a rooting partner, great. With all the Swedish influence on the Red Wings, maybe Michigan and Sweden can strike partnerships on many levels. How about you start with buying our cars?
Uncle Mxy 07-13-2009, 12:35 PM Someone needs to tell Langlois about the Big Blue Oval that owns Volvo Cars.

Volvo is in the process of being sold or was already sold, no?
geerussell 07-13-2009, 08:07 PM http://www.fullmoonfarm.us/greenfjdriven_ebay_web.jpg
Uncle Mxy 07-13-2009, 08:27 PM Rumors of Volvo's sale have heated and cooled. Saab, the other big Swedish auto company, had been part of GM until last month or so.
If Jonas gets a gig as a backup C, maybe he can get a max deal and buy Volvo out. :)
Glenn 07-17-2009, 12:10 PM Jonas Jerebko happy to be a Piston
BY GEORGE SIPPLE • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • July 16, 2009
Don’t expect Jonas Jerebko to go on a spending spree with money he makes as a rookie with the Pistons.
Jerebko, a 6-foot-10 forward from Sweden drafted in the second round, talked about coming to Detroit and what he plans to do with his first NBA contract in a chat with Interbasket.net.
“I will not start buying crazy stuff,” Jerebko said. “I will keep living my life and having a good time just like I am doing right now. Other than basketball, I like to hang out with friends and family, watching movies, Internet and just (enjoying) myself.”
Jerebko, whose boyhood idol was Reggie Miller, compared himself to Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince and Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko.
And his best strength?
“My intensity on the court, and that I am a team player,” Jerebko said.
What the fuck is a George Sipple?
Zekyl 07-17-2009, 02:29 PM What was supposed to be in the place of (enjoying) when he was talking?
Glenn 07-17-2009, 02:35 PM Fondling?
Higherwarrior 07-17-2009, 06:44 PM i enjoyed myself while reading this thread. twice
Uncle Mxy 07-17-2009, 07:11 PM Hopefully, some Euro-team won't pay him more than the Pistons to stay overseas.
Zekyl 07-18-2009, 10:57 AM I'm really thinking we should let him stay overseas another year. The Italian team he played for gave him the starting spot, a ton of minute, and let him play through his mistakes and learn. I'd have no problem with him getting another season of that.
January '09 DE Progress Report (http://www.draftexpress.com/article/European-Roundup-Double-Double-Jerebko--3093/), just some of the notable comments on it. It's a long article so I won't post it all.
Jerebko’s body is looking better and better, as it’s clear that the work he’s put in with Biella’s physical trainers is reaping huge benefits
...
few teams in European basketball would have the patience or foresight to allow Jerebko the opportunity to play through his mistakes the way the coaching staff at Biella has (in a starting role no less) from the moment he arrived, and it’s starting to reap huge dividends
...
does a little bit of everything for Biella, be it running the floor in their extremely up-tempo offense, crashing the offensive glass, rotating defensively, or doing a terrific job in the passing lanes
...
Looking very comfortable guarding perimeter players ... extremely competitive on top of that, doing a terrific job switching on screens and being extremely difficult to shoot over, as he’s very fundamentally sound
...
As his frame continues to fill out, he will only become a better defender
...
athleticism makes him an explosive finisher around the basket
...
good feel for the game and is nowhere near a finished product at this point, still capable of adding plenty of polish as well as continuing to get stronger
...
comfortable buyout situation (he has just one more year on his contract with Biella after this season)
That last part seems pretty important. He only has 1 more year on his contract in Europe. If he's still got a ton of development to do and their training staff has been doing great things for his strength/build, let him play out that last year. They're going to give him all the time he needs, and that would be much better for him than sitting on our bench. With Summers and Daye, we wouldn't be able to give him a ton of time in practice which is the only place he'd be developing.
NBA.com listed him as the best defender of the SF prospects. They had Daye as the Best Skill Level.
Best Defender: Jonas Jerebko
Other than Austin Daye, Jonas Jerebko is the biggest small forward in this group --he's reportedly been measured by teams at 6-foot-10 in shoes. Unlike Daye, though, Jerebko actually has some meat on his bones, and most importantly, is not afraid to use it. Jerebko has been playing the small forward position exclusively for the last two years in one of the highest levels of competition found outside the NBA -- the Italian first division. He's been responsible for shutting down some of the top scorers in that league, and has done an excellent job, particularly as the season moved on. Jerebko's size, length, athleticism and terrific motor allows him to absolutely smother opponents on the perimeter and emerge as quite a factor in the passing lanes and on the glass. He's the type of player who can defend multiple positions and is always around the ball, often wreaking havoc switching onto smaller players on the pick-and-roll. Jerebko has strong buzz these days and seems to be in the mix for quite a few teams drafting in the 25-35 range.
Glenn 07-18-2009, 11:21 AM How would that be better than giving him a year in the NBDL and some quality time with our players and coaches?
MoTown 07-18-2009, 01:19 PM The Walls of Jerebko?
Uncle Mxy 07-19-2009, 12:37 AM How would that be better than giving him a year in the NBDL and some quality time with our players and coaches?
Until I see some evidence to the contrary, I'm not assuming that our players and (particularly) coaches will rub off positively on Jonas or anyone else. I'm fairly sure some young players regressed by being under Curry. I'm not at all convinced that we have a "big man coach". Does Kuester have his own staff, and what's their track record?
We'll see... I have hope here, but that's all it is.
Pharaoh 07-19-2009, 05:57 AM The Walls of Jerebko?
No surprise but I love that nickname.
Jonas "The Walls of" Jerebko!
Zekyl 07-19-2009, 10:45 AM How would that be better than giving him a year in the NBDL and some quality time with our players and coaches?
It's one of the top euroleagues and their coaches/training staff have already done a ton of good for him. We can keep him here all offseason, can't we? If he's in the NBDL, he's not going to be getting much time with our coaches/players as it is. He'll be spending his time with their coaches/players.
Vinny 07-19-2009, 10:51 AM If they know he's bolting though, they won't have much motivation to work with him and let him play through his mistakes.
Glenn 12-18-2009, 12:34 PM Pistons discover a Swede surprise in Jonas Jerebko (http://www.detnews.com/article/20091218/SPORTS0102/912180351/Pistons-discover-a-Swede-surprise-in-Jonas-Jerebko/?imw=Y)

Glenn 06-28-2011, 01:15 PM Here's my EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Jonas Jerebko:
Me: If Pistons season starts on time, will you be ready to go? We need you, bud!
JJ: I'm ready if it starts tomorrow buddy
Me: YES!!
lospistones 06-28-2011, 02:58 PM lol.
he didn't answer my question :(
Joe Asberry 06-28-2011, 04:27 PM ask him if the Pistons gave him a qualifying offer or not, there was news about QO for Stuck, but not for Jonas, which worries me a bit
Glenn 06-28-2011, 05:22 PM That's a given, isn't it?
lospistones 06-28-2011, 05:50 PM Can they not extend the QO after Thursday?
Glenn 06-28-2011, 08:06 PM Ellis just answered my tweet. Jerebko had his QO extended the same time as Stuckey. "No decision" on Summers likely means he's either going elsewhere or will have to earn a contract in training camp.
lospistones 06-28-2011, 09:24 PM Shit. How would training camp even work if we were to lose games? They don't go through the motions of preseason and all that, do they?
We're only going to have one free agent spot available, if Joe chooses to fill it.
Glenn 06-28-2011, 09:28 PM My guess that if the miss training camp, they'll do an abbreviated camp, maybe 5 games over 10 days?
Just a guess.
lospistones 06-28-2011, 09:28 PM LOL.

Glenn 06-28-2011, 09:56 PM Thanks, that's hot.
Hat tip to my boy Joey Asberry. JJ got his QO, let not your heart be troubled.
lospistones 06-28-2011, 10:30 PM Well, now Goodwill just mindfucked me.
lospistones 06-28-2011, 10:53 PM ...aaand he was wrong and snarky about it.
Glenn 06-28-2011, 11:09 PM He's an a-hole.
Ellis is solid.
lospistones 06-28-2011, 11:13 PM Yeah, mofo Vincent has never tweeted me back.
I've had some decent luck with Langlois. Who else is responsive for you?
Glenn 06-28-2011, 11:31 PM Iott will answer questions, but he seems tied up with Tigers now. Ellis will answer frequently. Goodwill answers, but he's so damn condescending that I find myself wanting to troll him more than anything else. For some of these guys, I think it helps if you have a decent number of followers, which is unfortunate.
lospistones 06-28-2011, 11:42 PM Bleh. Alright. I'll just wait for spam and pr0n accounts to add me so I have more tweet-cred.
Do you visit any blogs? The only big ones I know of are detroitbadboys, pistonpowered, and need4sheed. I have my thoughts on them all...
Glenn 06-28-2011, 11:46 PM I don't really read blogs at all. Oh, except yours, of course.
lospistones 06-28-2011, 11:54 PM LOL. Still not sure where I'm going with mine. I just post things that could have been threads here. Picked a wrong time to start one though, what with the lockout and all.
Glenn 06-29-2011, 07:46 AM LOL.
Pistonpowered quoted your @mention in their brecking newz.
Too bad Hoopshype didn't leave it on there this morning.
lospistones 06-29-2011, 10:20 AM Ugh, all of hoopshype's rumors seem to come from message boards and twitter chats.
They have *just* enough redeem qualities to stay bookmarked.
Joe Asberry 06-29-2011, 10:57 AM Ellis just answered my tweet. Jerebko had his QO extended the same time as Stuckey. "No decision" on Summers likely means he's either going elsewhere or will have to earn a contract in training camp.
thanks inspector Glen, good work!
