View Full Version : LLTP/Dumars interview conducted 6/19/09 Glenn 06-22-2009, 01:36 PM Joe D draft preview, part 1 http://www.nba.com/pistons/news/dumars_090619.html WTFchris 06-22-2009, 02:14 PM He said there are 4-5 guys they like there. They are probably all considered 6th man scorers that could be a solid starter if he did trade someone. Pharaoh 06-23-2009, 08:39 AM Joe's words might come back to haunt him: KL: Your philosophy, I think – and correct me if I’m wrong here – is more about taking the best player rather than drafting for need. So maybe this makes this question moot, but because of the greater roster uncertainty this year, between the cap space and the trades that are possible, you may be drafting at a position that will become well-stocked in a few weeks. Is it more just let’s take the best player and let the chips fall where they may? JD: Actually, when you do have roster uncertainty, that’s when you really take the best player available. I think it’s easier sometimes or it’s more tempting sometimes to draft specifically for position when your roster is already stocked and you know exactly where you’re short. You end up saying, OK, we’re short in this position, we’re going to draft at this position. When there’s uncertainty in your roster, it’s just the opposite. Because there is uncertainty, you definitely take the best player available. We’re going to stay in that mind of thinking. We’re going to draft the best player and, like I said, add to our talent base, add another talented young player here. Ok, you said it Joe. Now fucking do it. Oh, and another thing from the Draft Preview with Joe: With the three second-round picks, assuming you keep them all, are you going to retain that philosophy – best player available – or are you going to be mindful of , if you’re already taken a point guard at 15 or a small forward at 15, we better go for a big with that first second-round pick? JD: There’s a pretty good chance that one, for sure, and possibly two of those guys will have to go to Europe, and so that’s going to play a big factor in it, too. Even with that, we’re going to take the best player, even though he probably wouldn’t be on our roster this year. Now we have two more players, talented players, in our organization. Not with us this year, but who we have the rights to. I can assure you we’re not going to draft four rookies and have them all on the team at the same time, so probably two and go from there. How does Joe know these guys are gonna end up in Europe? We have Kwame, Maxiell, Amir, Tay, Rip, AA, Stuckey and Bynum under contract. That's it. Plus 4 picks = 12 guys. Is Joe certain he's gonna add 3 free agents, or do 1 for 2 trades or something to fill out all the avialable spots on the roster? Nice to see all 4 picks will be used on the best player available. I can't wait to see who we Draft at #15 and early in the second round. Glenn 06-23-2009, 09:05 AM Dumars part 2 just posted at Pistons.com http://www.nba.com/pistons/news/dumars_090623.html?rss=true Glenn 06-23-2009, 09:09 AM Moved this to a new thread, since it touches on many subjects, not just the draft. Pharaoh 06-23-2009, 09:22 AM Not much to the second part, since it deals with free agency. I guess he can't really comment anyway, otherwise it could be viewed as "tampering" Glenn 06-26-2009, 01:38 PM You can sign up to listen in on a teleconference with Joe on Tuesday here: http://offers.palacenet.com/haw_signup_JoeD_09teleconference/ Pharaoh 06-26-2009, 10:52 PM Only time will tell if we took the best players available. But San Antonio (as usual) got some talent on Draft Day and didn't have a mid-first round pick. Chicago got my pick (Johnson) and since Daye is a long term project I'll have to wait a long time before I can trash our pick. We did get guys with a lot of potential though, and in a "shitty" draft I guess you really can't expect much more than that. |
