Sup all, I'm a golf noob but I want to get started so I can go with my buddies and drink a bunch and play without being absolutely awful. I know how the game works (as if it's hard), and I know some of the nuances regarding which clubs to use in which situation, but I don't know much about the actual equipment. Any recommendations on a brand or set to start with?

I bought some low cost Wilson clubs at Dunham's. The whole set (irons, woods, putter, bag) was 200 bucks. They aren't great, but good enough. They are nice and long too (I'm 6'1"). One thing to find out before buying is whether you prefer graphite or steel irons.

I'd buy better quality used clubs rather than cheaper quality new ones.

There are people that only use clubs for one or two seasons and then turn them in.

If you're willing to spend around $200-250, you can make out pretty well, IMO.

Nice, thanks both. Where might you recommend checking out some used ones?

Go to a place where you can hit them first.

I'm not familiar with Toledo (?) but King Par in Flint used to be pretty nice when I lived over on the East side.

Is Carl's Golfland still around?

I know someone (Ben/BJ) that works at the Tennis and Golf center in Royal Oak. It's on Woodward near that big cemetery. I'm sure they would have some used ones.

Before I bought my last set, I hit them (and other brands) for about 6 months. Don't think you have to buy a set that is one brand.

I have a Taylor Made Irons, Mizuno hybrids, King Cobra driver, Anser Putter.

Buy what you can hit and you will be happy. I like what Glenn says and I don't like what Glenn says. Its good cuz you can pick up a good set really really cheap, but it might not be your club and that would suck.

Golf is good.

And if ever in Sacramento, let's go golfing! and I drink beers but after playing.
