:SHIT STORM!:

Shouldn't Jimmy Carter be sent in to investigate?

Sorry if this seems snarky, but I have a hard time getting excited over electing the #2 person in Iran. #1 is still Khamenei. Period.

The interesting part isn't the election of the #2 person in Iran. It's the level of unrest over the outcome. It could just fizzle out as they crack down on it--the most likely outcome--but if it doesn't then it becomes a shitstorm worth watching. There's a generation of young, educated, tech savvy people in Iran that's kind of fed up with the status quo.

But with evidence being destroyed, will the true winner ever be in office?

I thought all this bad stuff would just go away with the messiah being elected.

I'm not so sure I'd call Ahmadinejad a "messiah," Tahoe.

I'm perfecting my NPR voice these days. Nasally, uttering EVERY phrase as it were a question, forming a very importan sounding name, like "Herman Oppinklause"--that I can also heavily accent parts of, as in "HerrrrMON Oppin-KLAAOOOOS-AY," and collecting a whole bunch of important sounding sounds to edit into the background of my reports. Things like a hammer pounding wood to add (if possible) interest to my report on a Northern Alaska Goat Herder who builds miniature versions of European hostels--but doesn't sell them. He just likes them. And he is amazed at all the notoriety it has brought to him.
I also am working on my profound interpretations of bad poetry, wonderful stories on subjects such as the endangered four legged Vermont Patagonian Gnat, how a guy lost his leg while opening a can of green beans and somehow found the strength to carry on and invent a new and improved (Environmentally friendly) fly swatter, AND one man's memoir of how he hitchiked all the way from Washington, DC to Fairfax, VA in a mere three years.

I don't know what it had to do with the thread, but that was some funny shit, Zip.

Apparently, the Iranians are attempting to photoshop the revolution. It turns out that photos of Ahmadinejad's rallies were "enhanced", to make it look like they were as large as his opponents when it's not even close.

I think Iran's got the same CG people working for them that are working for Kim Jong Il

It's so shitty but wtf can you do about it? I don't think even the people who are protesting in the streets actually want the US's help.

There's nothing that can really be done from the outside. They've pretty much got to work it out for themselves. If anything, US involvement or pressure would be spun to rally people around the hardliners.

Iran's Guardian Council has admitted that the number of votes collected in 50 cities surpass the number of those eligible to cast ballot in those areas.

The council's Spokesman Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei, who was speaking on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Channel 2 on Sunday, made the remarks in response to complaints filed by Mohsen Rezaei -- a defeated candidate in the June 12 Presidential election.

"Statistics provided by Mohsen Rezaei in which he claims more than 100% of those eligible have cast their ballot in 170 cities are not accurate -- the incident has happened in only 50 cities," Kadkhodaei said.

The spokesman, however, said that although the vote tally affected by such an irregularity is over 3 million, "it has yet to be determined whether the amount is decisive in the election results," reported Khabaronline.

Three of the four candidates contesting in last Friday's presidential election cried foul, once the Interior Ministry announced the results - according to which incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner with almost two-thirds of the vote.

Rezaei, along with Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, reported more than 646 'irregularities' in the electoral process and submitted their complaints to the body responsible for overseeing the election -- the Guardian Council.

Mousavi and Karroubi have called on the council to nullify Friday's vote and hold the election anew. This is while President Ahmadinejad and his Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli have rejected any possibility of fraud, saying that the election was free and fair.

Was there any polls prior to the election that showed the guy who lost was ahead by a bunch?

Is there any evidence that there really was fraud?

I'm all for a good protest every few years regardless of the answers, btw.
