* "I want Obama to fail" (http://thinkprogress.org/2009/01/20/limbaugh-obama-fail/) versus "I'm getting so sick and tired of people rooting for the defeat of the good guys" (http://alternativetulsa.blogspot.com/2009/01/two-faces-of-rush-limbaugh.html)

* Cheney would rather have (http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/cheney-picks-limbaughs-version-of-the-gop-2009-05-10.html) Rush Limbaugh speaking for the Republican Party than Colin Powell ... you know Colin Powell right? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Powell)

* Tea baggers. (http://static.crooksandliars.com/files/uploads/2009/05/teapartydouches_a28cd.jpg) Deserves a second mention.

* Newt Gingrich says that Obama is a McCarthyist who wants to set terrorists free inside the US and give them welfare. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/10/newt-gingrich-throws-kitc_n_201314.html) I'll give you a second to process all that crazy.

Big Swami

Where did I say that? What I thought was funny was when the usual suspects rounded up a small crowd of people in every city who seem to be militantly, furiously unaware of their surroundings, and put them on TV. "Zero Taxes" indeed. The best part was that all the public infrastructure spending they're complaining about is what is providing them a delighted audience.

Big Swami

* People going nuts (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,512560,00.html) about Obama's non-existent plan to take their guns away. I have no idea where (http://crooksandliars.com/david-neiwert/beck-and-nras-lapierre-warn-insidiou) they got that idea.

* Republicans have apparently decided that the way for them to climb out of the quicksand (http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/political-media/the-incredible-shrinking-gop-only-one-in-five-self-identify-as-republican/) is to hold a meeting where they will officially begin referring to Democrats as "Democrat Socialists." (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0509/22445.html) This tactic is sustainable and will cause people to take them seriously again.

As the building is crumbling and the basement is collapsing, the Republicans can always be relied on to order a new coat of paint. Or am I supposed to be calling them the Republic Fascists now, considering how important it is for someone to rebrand someone else's brand in tough times like these?

I did learn about the '88 campaign in a Political Science class taught by a liberal teacher, even he said Dukakis really didn't have a shot after 8 years of a popular President.

DE
05-15-2009, 11:56 AM
Yes Wil, good argumentation there. I give that one step above "I have gay friends."

Now try using what you learned in that class to present arguments in favor of what your saying. Did Dukakis ever have a point lead? Was there any time they were neck and neck? If so, what changed that? Did any negative campaigning help? You know, like Dukakis being a card carrying member of the pinko commie ACLU and giving some evil black man named Willy Horton a plane ticket to Florida to rape and murder some white women?

The Dems lost their logical front runners to win it all with Cuomo deciding not to run and Hart's scandal. Imagine who would run if both Hillary and Obama dropped out, and that's the sort of situation that led to Dukakis back in '88. Hell, I voted for Bush Sr. in '88, but would've gladly voted Tanner '88 if I had a chance to. ;)

You have a particular grace and calm that I adore. You have a level of sophistication that so fitting with your beauty. I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night’s light - but hey, that would be going into sexual details ...

I hope peeps NEVER shut the fuck up about santity of marriage and family values. Never ever shut the fuck up about that no matter if you might screw up or not.

And why do y'all have to make these broader statements about peeps and their political views cuz they had an affair?

I guess when Barney Frank has his 'lover' in his basement running a male escort service, he should be attacked for all his political views.

Earlier I had an argument that would only happen here, at least in my life. I was walking out the latrine near our motor pool and an old sergeant in third platoon was walking in. I said hello and he launched into the latest government ripoff.
"Sergeant Gussman, your buddy Ed Rendell just raised my taxes 16% in Pennsylvania."
He stopped at the urinal and began to multitask. I was glad to be near the door.
"That means he's taking 16 dollars out of every hundred I make. What do you think of that?"
I exited fearing he would lose concentration and some problem would ensue.
When he came outside I said, "Take it easy Sergeant (Arch Conservative) a 16% tax increase on a 2.65% tax is an increase of about 40 CENTS per hundred dollars."
He sputtered, "CNN said 16% and that means $16 per hundred." Then he calmed down and blamed CNN for misleading him.
He is still upset at Ed Rendell and at CNN and I suppose at me for ruining his perfectly good attack on "those damned Liberals."

The devil's advocate argument is that if everyone has guns, the person with ill intentions will face opposition. This case was made around here when the NIU shooting happened. Since guns aren't allowed on campus, the only person with guns was the person with bad intentions. Therefore, guns should be allowed on campus.

DE
09-19-2009, 08:37 AM
I think that's what bothers me the most. It can even lead to, "If you keep shouting a lie over and over again...". What happened to reading? What happened to reading what the other side says? I read Buckley every weekend in the Times in college. Didn't agree with most of what he said, but there was no doubt he was good at formulating his arguments and citing evidence. What's wrong with having your opinion actually challenged? Can anything bad come from that?

Big Swami
09-21-2009, 09:29 AM
The conservative mindset is basically one so totally at odds with consensus reality that in order for them to change the opinions of the world at large, they have to embrace relativism - something they are in total opposition to, on philosophical grounds.

"What's true for you may not be what's true for me" is the exact opposite of what conservatism stands for, but right now it's the only thing being used to promote conservatism. It's the entire basis for the existence of Fox News, as if "the news" isn't really the news when it comes to conservatives. "What you're saying disagrees with something I heard somewhere else, so I'm going to choose to believe something different from what most people do." Considering the moral certainty required to be a conservative, it's ironic, nu?

Once on the ground, FEC filings suggest, Steele travels in style. A February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, $6,596 dropped at the nearby Four Seasons, and $1,620.71 spent [update: the amount is actually $1,946.25] at Voyeur West Hollywood, a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex.
RNC trips to other cities produced bills from a long list of chic and costly hotels such as the Venetian and the M Resort in Las Vegas, and the W (for a total of $19,443) in Washington. A midwinter trip to Hawaii cost the RNC $43,828, not including airfare.

If they are so great why are you afraid to let peeps join or not join a union? Opt out of the union.

And we have labor laws on the books now to take care of the work week, etc.

I wonder how long you think hard working Americans should continue to pay for Unions peeps HC and Pension plans cuz of something Unions did in 1920 or something? Especially since their pensions are better than the hard working peeps of America and the Union workers today didn't have shit to do with the 1920s.

And all of this is about Unions taking union dues and giving it to politicians to get them elected and then, AND THEN negotiating with some of those same politicians for pay and benefits for the unions. AND THE TAXPAYERS PAY FOR IT!

These politicians are negotiating with taxpayer money. If they had to do it like it was their own business, I'd like to think it'd be different. The thing is, the dems and unions have them in their pocket and they screw the taxpayer.

Its partly why this country is in debt like it is and its a cycle that needs to be broken.

You weep for the rich and you curse Unions. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that collective bargaining, though difficult, helps workers. And unions' existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, helps average Americans! You don't want the truth, because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want unions to help the average American! You need unions to help the average American! We use words like "rights", "pensions", "collective bargaining". We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline! Pension contributions are just deferred salary. That is fact, there is no gray area there. Every dollar that goes into those funds comes from the workers' compensation package. Period.

Aside from the specifics of this there are two things about this attack on teachers and teaching unions and public workers that honestly saddens me. First it shows the place we hold teaching, teachers and education in this society. I absolutely believe the common belief that we are told that access to education is one of the biggest reasons the United States grew as strongly and as quickly as it did over the last century. Teachers in so many countries/societies/cultures are given revered status (and I don't mean worship) or, basically, it is made known the importance of what they do. They teach our children. Their work affects our futures, directly and indirectly. They cultivate our human capital. I honestly don't think this debate is about good teachers versus bad, that's not the case. It's about the absolute devaluation of our society of something important.

Along those lines is this assault on public workers, public unions or unions in general. I can't stop reading about the enormous growing chasm between the über-rich and the poor in this country. The poverty level grows every day. The number of families and children who live in poverty grows every day. The richest % of the US are getting richer. And yet we are to attack a middle class group of society? They are supposed to be demonized and blamed for the problems we have? Shouldn't we, as a society, aspire so that every worker in this country can have a decent salary, health care (forget public or private or whatever, just health care) and some way to be taken care of after retirement?

Tahoe
03-04-2011, 02:41 PM
The middle class are the hard working peeps who are paying for the public workers elite HC and Pensions.

As far as attacks go, the only attack I see is the Unions attacking hard working peeps paychecks. They want more and more and more. Its time for the madness to stop.

I kind of like the Canadian way of doing things - there are more than 2 parties in the legislature, and no one ever gets a majority, so they have to build coalitions in order to get things moving. And everyone stays there unless the coalition falls apart. Only then do they have new elections.

DE
04-01-2011, 11:35 AM
That's the same for almost all countries with a parliamentary system. Though I see that in many countries those other parties are getting hurt as the main left and right parties have taken a page from US politics; that's to say they create bi-polarization on purpose to eliminate all other parties (and leave just two).

Honestly we have a great system to have more than one party. Unfortunately people in this country tend to only think of presidential elections and winner take all. All grass roots movements seem to have the need to do this within one of the big two. I don't see why. Yes that would fraction a party, and of course hurt its chances for presidential elections. But the Congress is important. Voting blocks are still power in congress and could get on committees. There are state elections and you can see that governors can be from other parties to get elected.
