View Full Version : Did Sheed ask for a buyout? Also, source: He wants $8m+/yr. or he'll retire
Glenn 04-27-2009, 10:00 PM Also, more reports of him retiring are floating.
Sources say Pistons forward/center Rasheed Wallace asked for a buyout this year, but management declined. Some observers think the possible buyout would have been to join the Cavs. He's an unrestricted free agent this summer and could be someone the Cavs covet — at the right price. He seems totally disinterested in this current series, but the 6-foot-11, 230-pounder still has something left in his tank.

Kstat 04-27-2009, 10:04 PM Cavs are highly unlikely. I'd sooner guess the spurs.
Glenn 04-27-2009, 10:15 PM I didn't think it was possible for me to dislike Sheed more and more each day, but it's heading that direction.
:shitstorm:
Glenn 04-27-2009, 10:16 PM :SHIT STORM!:
there
Uncle Mxy 04-27-2009, 10:20 PM Why wouldn't he just ask to be traded?
This smells like bullshit to me, all by itself.
Tahoe 04-27-2009, 10:46 PM I don't know GD...Can you blame him for not wanting to bail on a team that is about to try to rebuild on the fly? He might want sumpin a lil more stable. I think he knew it was over.
Love the Shitstorm emo.
Cross 04-28-2009, 03:01 AM why wasnt this made public before? because itd fucked the team up before? like someone else said, then why didnt he just ask for a trade..
micknugget 04-28-2009, 07:48 AM I think that Joe didn't want it to get out just how bad this team was falling apart but that kinda showed up in the playoffs. I'll be sooooooo glad when Sheed is gone!
WTFchris 04-28-2009, 08:49 AM Why wouldn't he just ask to be traded?
This smells like bullshit to me, all by itself.
Why would Joe trade him? Then he loses our cap space this year (unless he got an expiring back).
Glenn 04-28-2009, 08:51 AM I assume that he asked for the buyout after the trade deadline.
Pharaoh 04-28-2009, 09:28 AM The team needs to be blown up.
If the story about Rip and Curry is true then 1 has to go (I wonder which one we'd all dump lol)
Sheed and AI are gone - no use wondering WTF they were up to while they were here for this past season. We know they stunk up the joint.
Uncle Mxy 04-28-2009, 01:19 PM Why would Joe trade him? Then he loses our cap space this year (unless he got an expiring back).
Depending on where he'd want to go, it wouldn't be that hard. I doubt it'd be as tricky as what it took for us to get him.
WTFchris 04-28-2009, 01:25 PM But you wouldn't get a decent big man back. So you're probably getting a wing or guard making big money. That wouldn't help at all. Unless you are getting a young center back I don't see how trading Sheed would have helped at all.
Glenn 04-28-2009, 01:46 PM I agree that's why it didn't happen, anybody that would have had what Joe would want in return wouldn't need/want Sheed.
Uncle Mxy 04-28-2009, 03:22 PM When did Sheed not want to be here? I can't believe that he would've wanted a buyout after the trade deadline without having pushed for a trade long before, especially since we were likely making the playoffs throughout all this.
In isolation, this just smells wrong to me.

Tahoe 04-28-2009, 04:17 PM He can be a final piece but not the 1st piece of the puzzle. He needs to go.
FatKid 04-28-2009, 05:31 PM I don't think its a stretch to say most if not all of us loved sheed when he got here and what he brought. but ever since the year we lost the championship his game and attitude hasn't kept up with his mouth. I miss the sheed we had and hate to see the sheed that just doesn't care anymore. Sadly he has become a liability and has to go.
Tahoe 04-28-2009, 06:03 PM I expected a lil more of him buying into the Pistons after we won it. But his contract negoatiations dragged out a lil too long for me. He wasn't seen in Detroit, iirc, after we won it. He didn't come back the following year showing much appreciation for the rest of the gang, Pistons fans, orgainization, etc. Maybe thats being a pussy and looking for things in a player that we shouldn't look for. Maybe we should just look to his play on the court...Ooops.
Well, if it is true I'm glad at least he didn't play it out in the press. As for it maybe affecting his game; I'm sure sure two many ice cubes in his water would have been enough for him to dog it the rest of the year.
shags 04-28-2009, 06:46 PM Around the beginning of March, there was a rumor by a Cleveland writer (http://mvn.com/cavalierattitude/2009/03/buyout-season-a-poor-mans-trade-deadline.html) that a big name was going to get bought out potentially. Most people thought it might be Sheed, so I'm not surprised by this story. As for him asking for a trade, he may have, but Dumars probably told him (and other teams) that he'd only trade him for expiring contracts. You obviously don't make a trade to give up any of your off season flexibility, and any fan with a clue should know that.
I guess I have a little bit more appreciation for Sheed than others. His arrival brought us a title, and that's the whole point. It also brought us within a game of another one, and 3 more years of ECF appearances. The problem became is that what he brought was too indispensible, despite the fact that he was so unreliable.
So I completely agree with everyone that he needs to go. It's time, and it was probably time after last season. But I'm still going to miss Sheed, warts and all.
Wizzle 04-28-2009, 06:52 PM Report: Wizzle asked Sheed to leave after he left Horry
I appreciate the ring... but it went a little downhill every year after that until this year when the ride nosedived.
Thanks, goodbye.
Tahoe 04-28-2009, 08:09 PM Yeah, its pretty bad when some peeps want KB on the roster before Sheed.
Glenn 04-29-2009, 12:04 PM Here I come, to save the day!
:mccosky:
Rasheed Wallace never wanted a buyout
Sorry to spoil another rumor with the truth.
Contrary to published reports out of Cleveland, Rasheed Wallace never approached Joe Dumars about a buyout.
Could you imagine? Here's Wallace, struggling most of the season, missing 11 games with a calf injury, coming into Dumars' office and saying, "Joe, I need you to buy me out so I can finish the season with the Cavs. You know, help LeBron get that 'ship."
Sure, anything you want.
Wallace, as Dumars confirmed through e-mail Tuesday, wouldn't be that bold, or stupid.
That said, one of Wallace's running bits in the locker room was to wish out loud for a buyout. It started when the Pistons signed Chris Webber a couple years ago after he'd been bought out by Philadelphia.
Wallace would always say, "Damn, I wish somebody would buy me out."
It was a joke. He was envious of Webber getting all his money from the 76ers and another check from the Pistons on top of it.
Now, the other part of the Cleveland report -- that the Cavaliers will consider signing Wallace this summer -- is true.
Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry loves big men who can shoot from the perimeter. He would love to have Wallace spotted up when LeBron James draws double- and triple-teams.
WTFchris 04-29-2009, 12:11 PM The Cavs have a lot of question marks this offseason. Wally is a FA, Sideshow and Big Z can be as well. They have 71 mil in salaries already (if those two don't opt out). I doubt they could add Sheed without shedding Big Z's salary, and why would he opt out? Would that even make them a better team?
Glenn 04-29-2009, 12:11 PM Wouldn't it be hilarious if Uncle Mxy was actually Chris McCosky?
Higherwarrior 04-29-2009, 12:15 PM what on earth are you talking about with this topic? it's pretty obvious sheed already retired 3 years ago. he just hasn't made it official yet.....
Uncle Mxy 04-29-2009, 03:32 PM Wouldn't it be hilarious if Uncle Mxy was actually Chris McCosky?
I can state unequivocably that I am not Chris McCosky. The only time I've ever been credited as a reporter was for the high school paper, and really I was more of an editor who did little fill-in pieces. I once wrote a spooky "horror-scope" column for Halloween... yessir.
Yours was a time of innocence Mxy.
Glenn 04-30-2009, 11:56 AM Alex (Raleigh, N.C.): What are the odds of Sheed coming back next year? He is one of my favorite players and I would hate to see him go.
Langlois: A month ago I would have said 50-50. Today, I’d peg the odds lower. Maybe much lower. I think he’d be a great pickup for a contender that needs a No. 3 big man and wouldn’t have to ride him more than 20-25 minutes a night. If Lamar Odom leaves the Lakers as a free agent, Wallace would be very good coming off the bench in LA behind Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, for instance. He’s been linked to San Antonio. He’ll be 35 when next season begins. The first priority of this off-season for the Pistons will be landing a young big man with the cap space they’ve created who can play alongside Rodney Stuckey for the next five seasons. If they can do that and there’s still room for Wallace, then maybe.
I wonder what made Langlois change his tune on Sheed in the last week or two?
WTFchris 04-30-2009, 12:13 PM Shit, playing in LA for 25 minutes a night would be ideal for him. He can just stand there jacking threes and they'd be fine with it.
Darth Thanatos 04-30-2009, 12:15 PM They already dumped a three point shooting big man(Vlad). They wouldn't be interested in Sheed.
WTFchris 04-30-2009, 12:18 PM But Sheed plays defense a lot better than Vlad, and can guard centers. Vlad can barely guard PF's. They already had Odom as a backup forward and didn't need Vlad.
geerussell 04-30-2009, 12:34 PM Wouldn't it be hilarious if Uncle Mxy was actually Chris McCosky?
It would be great it McCosky actually had Mxy's level of credibility.
Glenn 04-30-2009, 12:38 PM Mxy's been mad at me since I wrote that, lol.
Shit, playing in LA for 25 minutes a night would be ideal for him. He can just stand there jacking threes and they'd be fine with it.
I smile my sarcastic, holier than thou grin at you and know in my higher plane of existence that it's about creating space using the triangle and not about having two stars and a chucker that makes my genius offense work so well.
Glenn 05-05-2009, 01:48 PM Sheed to retire?
SLAM contributor J. Gamble [making his debut with us next issue] hears from a close personal friend of Rasheed Wallace’s that unless Sheed gets $8 million to play next year, he’s going to retire. If that’s true, we’ve probably seen the last of Sheed in the NBA.
http://slamonline.com/online/nba/2009/05/sheed-to-retire/
Joe Asberry 05-05-2009, 02:01 PM he's made so much money, whats the difference to play for 5.5 or 8 mil? if he's going to retire its not because of the money...
darkobetterthanmelo 05-05-2009, 02:21 PM Exactly, there are no financial benefits to him retiring, its just agent talk. He can get market value on the decent teams, or maybe slightly better than market value on the crappy teams.
Glenn 05-05-2009, 02:28 PM There are only a couple of teams that can give him more than the MLE, and we're one of them. Unless he wants to work with Joe on a S&T, that is.
WTFchris 05-05-2009, 03:00 PM Yeah, he won't get 8 mil unless there is a S&T in place. Joe could get an extra future pick for doing that maybe but then we'd have to take back 6 mil from that team (because he'd be signing with a team over the cap).
The only way I do that is if the deal is for a better big man. Like Sheed signed and traded for West and Mo Pete. We'd save them about 7 mil and they get a decent replacement to buy time.
Then we'd still have RIP and Tay that we could move for another big man.
Higherwarrior 05-05-2009, 06:54 PM $8 mil. after the season he just played? shoot, he'll be lucky to get the MLE. he'll get it, but not for more than 2-3 years at most IMO. but not $8 mil. no way he gets that IMO....
If we could take over his brain, and make him play all out and care, then he would be worth 8 mil. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) we Pistons fans know better.
Higherwarrior 05-05-2009, 09:25 PM but even then- his body was showing some serious signs of age this year which makes him even more of a risk to sign to more than the MLE. his knee, nagging calf injury, hamstring, feet.....whoever signs him had better have some WD-40 handy.
Or he could, you know, really be in shape when the season starts.
It's just time to say goodbye and wish him the best wherever he goes, whatever he does.
Yeah I'm not saying to keep him lol.
Tahoe 05-05-2009, 11:12 PM If we added some serious inside bigs, I'd consdier him...someone who floats outside a lil too much.
Pharaoh 05-06-2009, 08:18 AM We could sign Shaquille O'Neal in his fucking prime and I wouldn't want Sheed back.
He did what he was brought here to do - we won a title and we ruled the East (or close to it) for years. Thanks very much.
Now fuck off.
He's done. He's past his use-by-date. He needs a new challenge. He needs a change of scenery.
Whatever the fuck you wanna call it just call it already and be done with him.
Uncle Mxy 05-07-2009, 07:53 PM Would Sheed coming off the bench understand that he'd be a primary weapon and possible SMOY, or would he just want to chuck 3s and dog it?
WTFchris 05-08-2009, 08:48 AM He might chuck threes even more knowing they are momentum changers.
Pharaoh 05-08-2009, 09:10 AM Can we please forget Sheed?
No sign and trade, no return.
Can't we just do the Mason intro, thanks for the memories/standing O if or when he comes back as a member of someone else's team?
