Lions draft Brandon Pettigrew at #20.

Approve or not?

What grade would you give the pick?

He's talented and could be a very good TE. But the Lions had more important needs than a TE... LIKE DEFENSE.

Rey was available - that would have been the better pick.

Mo Mo Mo go get some kool-aid.

Seriously, if the Lions do the Colt thing, where they draft a bunch of Offense in a year and then go Defense, I'd go with that.

We signed more defensive players in FA, or traded, than offense. Grady, Petersen, Henry, another LB I forgot the name of, Titans nickel back, we won't be the Ravens but we got better there in the offseason.

If you just invested 42million bucks in a guy, you HAVE to do some of these things to help him succeed.

I agree, but wouldn't you draft a lineman?

And wouldn't you go defense first, considering the Lions had the second worst defense in HISTORY last year? I know they got a lot of free agents for the defense, but you build through the draft.

I just feel like this draft feels a lot like a Millen draft.

6'6" - 263? The guy is a monster. I like the pick. He's going to provide pass protection, run blocking and will be a good target from a position we haven't had a good player in since David Sloan (Marcus Pollard was old when he got here).

Also, criticize the pick all you want, you'll have to answer to this guy:

Millen forced players on coaches that the coaches DID NOT WANT.

Schwartz is on board with this. They said they will both agree on the picks.

I don't want to ignore defense, cuz we will NEVER win the Super Bowl without it. But with the salaries that the #1oa pick get, you almost have to draft a QB to make it sensible. Once you do that, you have to help him succeed.

Defense will have to take a back seat for this year only.

you dont draft stafford and then tell him good luck and draft defense the rest of the way. you got to support the pick, and i think pettigrew does that. i didnt watch him, so i wont speculate him over oher, but the experts love the pick so ill have to give them the benefit of the doubt (normally the right thing to do with the lions. theyre professionals, after all).

i gave it an A.

Someone said "We took the 1st TE over the 4th best OT. Thats what drafting talent means to me.

MoTown

Stafford shouldn't even play this year, so I don't think giving him talent around him matters. I've already stated that I'm all about defense, and I just wish these first two picks were defense instead of offense.

I can't help but have flashbacks because we're drafting flashy players like nothing has changed...

We took the guy who beat up a cop instead of the homeless guy. What are we, the Bengals?

He's supposed to be a solid blocker and a solid receiver. Nothing wrong with that. We needed a compliment to Calvin, instead of bringing in a hardcore #2 receiver, we grabbed a decent #2 in FA, drafted a supposedly sweet TE, and drafted a potential #3 receiver later on. I suppose that works if we can block for the QB and give him time to throw.

I don't mind it. CJ will draw a lot of safety help, which means the TE will be 1 on 1 with the LB's. If they have a good offensive game plan they could really get a lot of production out of him.

Should have taken Oher here and give Stafford some kind of OL.

Tahoe

He can prolly block better than Oher. :)

The more I think about this pick, the more I hate it. The Lions basically drafted another receiver in the first round. I can't help but be angry about this. It is a Millen pick. Good job Meyhew.

The Lions are pathetic. I would have been fine with this pick if they had drafted Curry with the first pick.

You gotta like the Hill pick though.

Vinny
04-26-2009, 02:27 PM
This is a big, big boy. I think he was drafted as a blocker first. Just watched some video of him, he's fucking huge. If they didn't have Oher graded very well, which it appears they didn't, then I love the pick. He's a beast.

MoTown

Maybe they can move him to tackle, then. <--- No, not seriously...

With a suspect O Line, it's a plus to have a guy who can block, but also break out into the gaps as a safety valve for Stafford. With an overly aggressive defensive scheme, popping Pettigrew into the voids can keep the D in check, which, in theory, will allow Stafford to stay alive in the pocket long enough to develop his instincts.

Just a random thought, but I was wondering if we were going to grade the rest of the picks. Anyone know????

Howabout I create a thread where we grade the picks round by round?

Tahoe
04-26-2009, 03:33 PM
I was ok, with the first pick in the 3rd, but do NOT like the second pick in the 3rd.

We have 2 6ths and 2 7s.

That might be hard to vote round by round cuz of that.

By SI

POSITIVES: Physically talented tight end with a complete game. Nimble athlete who quickly releases off the line, runs well laterally, and adjusts to the errant throw, making the reception in stride. Nicely settles into the open spot on the field, extends his hands, and makes the reception away from his frame. Plays faster than his 40 time, effective running after the reception, and a sturdy pass catcher who takes a pounding yet holds onto the ball. Blocks with good lean, and bends his knees. Works to stays square, strong at the point, and effective as a position blocker. Quickly gets out to the second level, and easily controls linebackers.

NEGATIVES: Shows marginal quickness to his game. Must learn to keep his blocking intensity until the whistle blows. Not a true downfield threat as a pass catcher.

ANALYSIS: Pettigrew is a terrific tight end who possesses natural receiving skills, and he gets results as a blocker. He's very efficient in all areas of the game, and he is a consistent tight end rather than a true playmaker. He offers starting potential at the next level, and if he consistently plays at a high-level, Pettigrew will have a long NFL career.

If he comes in and helps us improve our running game, plus he can break out and catch passes, I'll be happy. SI mentioned that Oklahoma State-Texas game where he dominated Orakpo on multiple occasions. That works for me.

ESPN interviewed Jack Del Rio today.

This is no joke. Del Rio looks like an older Stafford.

Prolly a preacher's daughter. Once Tebow is in the big leagues, and he's got $$$, and he's away from Gainsville, he's gonna plow her like a cornfield.
