Hockey was never the Lumberjacks (unless you're referring to Arthur Hill High School's team). No, my friend, it was the Lumber Kings.

damn! you're right....it was a stretch to even get as close as I did. They lasted what, 40, 45 minutes?

Muskegon Lumberjacks, RIP

They were a Pittsburgh Penguins farm team.

Grand Rapids Owls, Port Huron Flags, Flint Generals, Saginaw Gears, Indianapolis Ice, Fort Wayne Comets...off the top of my head.

Toledo Storm went under a little less than 2 years ago, but they just build a new arena downtown and they're bringing them back as the Toledo Walleye.

Zek, the teams I listed were from the 70's and 80's. Maybe some of them are still around, I dunno.

I think the Toledo Blades (?) might have been around back then.

I don't know how old the Storm were. Something like 1990 was their start.

The Kzoo Wings were in the old IHL, too. They're still around and playing in some other whocares league now.

Can you guys please stop talking about something nobody cares about, and talk about Charles Rogers?

Zekyl

You're asking him to stop doing what you're asking him to start doing. Confusing...

There were a couple of Saginaw Gears players that used to come to the Hideaway bar, just on the east side of Bay City (just over the bridge) anyway me and a couple of my buds used to fight those guys quite a bit. They were a lot older than us, but we held our own. I forgot their names now.

Probably Mel Hewitt or Stu Irving.

That sounds familiar but I can't say for sure. Their coach...kind of a curly haired guy used to come in to. He'd just set there.

Glenn

Dennis Derosiers was the coach.

aka "Rosie"

That doesn't ring a bell either. How do you remember all of this stuff?

Ahh, I bet it was Don Perry.

Now that sounds familiar.

I'm not sure if these guys were starters or bench guys or if it was the head coach. Nothing to brag about, not sure why I posted it, but it was some crazy times in Bay City back in the day.

IIRC, that were some damn fun games to watch. They were fighting to get into the NHL.

Glenn

Brawls almost every night. They were coming up into the stands on a regular basis. It was very similar to Slapshot.

I think there were some 'notables' in that league at times. Weren't the NHL teams able to send guys down like baseball?

Or didn't the NHL teams have any rights to any of those players?

Hermy

Go lumberjacks. Fuck Clevland.

Back in the days that I used to go (late 70's, early 80's) the "I" was pretty low level. They were guys that were, for the most part, too late in their careers to ever make it to the show. Guys that just couldn't bring themselves to hang it up. A few of them even got local endorsement deals for car dealers, restaurants, etc. There were a few exceptions, of course. For some reason Saginaw became a hotbed for NHL goalie prospects. I saw Bob Froese (Flyers), Rogie Vachon (Kings), Doug Keans (Kings/Bruins) and maybe even a few more play for Saginaw.

Later in the 80's the Saginaw Hawks went big time and became the top minor league affiliate for the Chicago Blackhawks. Same unis and everything. Ed Belfour played at least a full season for Saginaw, and he might even still own his Freeland home where he kept his old car collection.

I agree. I remember it being really young or really old relative to pro sports.

I never knew that about Belfour. Obviously before he found his NHL success, or did you see him when they were coming back from injuries too?

Glenn

Belfour was in Saginaw before he made it to the NHL.

This is one of the dumber pics posted but it cracked me up for some reason.

The Flint Generals had a pretty cool uni, iirc.
