View Full Version : Hypothetical question
Glenn 03-13-2009, 11:44 AM If you could live as a billionaire from the age of 25 until you were 50 in exchange for spending the rest of your life in prison at 50+, would you do it?
DISCLOSURE: I stole this from the Dan Patrick show (he was discussing Madoff)
Wilfredo Ledezma 03-13-2009, 12:17 PM Hmmm...
If it's a white-collar prison, then yes.
Black Dynamite 03-13-2009, 12:24 PM Hmmm...

you'd get raped there too. :)
Wilfredo Ledezma 03-13-2009, 12:25 PM you'd get raped there too. :)
I don't think they covet the 50 year olds.
Glenn 03-13-2009, 12:31 PM I'm thinking that I'd decline.
Sure, the time from age 25 to about 35 would be unbelievable, but once you hit ~35, I would guess that a good amount of your time would be spent thinking about/dreading the imminent.
Insanity or suicide wouldn't be a surprise at that point.
Tahoe 03-13-2009, 12:33 PM No friggin way. No, NO NO NO NO NO
DennyMcLain 03-13-2009, 12:48 PM Add to question: ..and you can have continuous sex with any woman you'd like, anyone, anytime, anywhere, until the age of 50....
Tahoe 03-13-2009, 12:50 PM Still NO fucking way
Glenn 03-13-2009, 12:50 PM Add to question: ..and you can have continuous sex with any woman you'd like, anyone, anytime, anywhere, until the age of 50....
That's sort of implied with "billionaire", isn't it?

this is a flawed hypothetical because we don't know what the alternative is.
You have to give an option B. If I'm making decent money already (not rich, but enough to get by without pinching pennies), no way. If I'm homeless I probably take that deal and live it up until I'm 50.
Glenn 03-13-2009, 12:53 PM The alternative is your life as it is now.
The intent was that everyone answers the question from their own perspective.
WTFchris 03-13-2009, 12:58 PM then no way. I wouldn't touch that deal. I'm not living the high life, but I'm not in line at soup kitchens either.
Tahoe 03-13-2009, 12:59 PM I'd rather have a shitty life (I'm happy, but just saying) and be outside of the bars 100 times out of 100.
FUCK prison with a capital F and U and C and K
Uncle Mxy 03-13-2009, 01:26 PM Would you KNOW that you were going to live and be reasonably healthy up to 50, regardless of what you did?
Glenn 03-13-2009, 01:27 PM Let's assume that yes, you are going to live to be at least 50, whether you take the deal or not.
Glenn 03-13-2009, 01:42 PM Something tells me that Zip's taking the $
Tahoe 03-13-2009, 02:41 PM My buddy (ex buddy prolly) is in Folsom. We don't speak anymore but one of the old group still talks to him and relays stuff. NOTHING anyone would want to deal with.
I'm prolly taking this question too far, but mention prison and I run away.
Maybe Dan should have tried, you have to go to a deserted island or something.
Glenn 03-13-2009, 04:39 PM POLL ADDED
Uncle Mxy 03-13-2009, 06:54 PM If I were 25, and there were a deal where I was guaranteed to live healthy and out of prison until 50, regardless of what I did, I'd take the pile of cash. I'd do every death-defying kick-ass fun thing imaginable. By the I went to prison, I'd be extra-crispy and ready for death. I'd probably go on a diet of HIV, ebola, and uranium so when I turned 50, I'd take the whole damn prison down with me.
If for nothing else, I wouldn't want to be behind bars and not be able to see my kid.
Glenn 03-13-2009, 07:02 PM So that's one yes vote (yet to be recorded in the poll).
Maybe I shouldn't have made the poll public. I'm wondering if we'll get completely honest answers.
I've never seen $10 billion in cash, but I'd like to think that it wouldn't change my answer.
Wilfredo Ledezma 03-13-2009, 07:04 PM To be filthy rich during the prime years of my life would be great.
Once I hit 50, it's all downhill anyway.
White-collar prison is practically a nursing home.

I'm not quite there yet, but you'd be surprised.
Zip Goshboots 03-13-2009, 11:02 PM Add to question: ..and you can have continuous sex with any woman you'd like, anyone, anytime, anywhere, until the age of 50....
Yes. All you do when you hit fifty anyway is try to act like a 25 year old, or you kill the bitch who has made your life miserable for the last 30 years because you married the first piece of regular ass you ever got. Besides, at 50 men really go downhill. Age sets in, gravity takes over, and the kids are finally out of the house but you're still suffering from having to pay for their dumbasses and all you have is a hosefull of stupid shit you bought for them that they got sick of after 12 minutes. And if you had all the money, had all the bitchez, what the fuck else would you need? No way you get that shit hiding in a cubicle for 40 years until you get booted onto social security. And besides, most people are so goddamm tired from working their asses off, being nagged to death by their miserable fat wives, and bailing their dumbass kids out of jail (who then desert them until they need someone to take care of THEIR kids) that when they finally hit that SUCCESS plateau at about 50, again, they don't know how to enjoy it.
Give me the billions of dollars from 25-50, the bitchez, and then yeah, the white collar prison until I croak at 63 just like the miserable fucks who have to work all their lives and croak a year after they retire.

DISCLOSURE: I stole this from the Dan Patrick show (he was discussing Madoff)
With billions of dollars and decades to plan, how do you not have a contingency plan to avoid jail?
Flip the script and I might consider taking the deal. 25 to 50 in jail and the remainder as a billionaire.
Glenn 03-14-2009, 02:06 PM No way around it, if you have to go to prison, that's just part of the deal.
I heard somebody say they'd build their own prison, which is fine if you don't want to take the question "seriously".
Timone 03-14-2009, 02:11 PM I don't think anyone takes this question seriously. With exception of Zip, maybe.
Glenn 03-14-2009, 02:12 PM By that I mean if you are just going to look for ways to circumvent the hypothetical, then sure, you can do that.
Zip Goshboots 03-14-2009, 07:20 PM I don't think anyone takes this question seriously. With exception of Zip, maybe.
You're darn right I do.
Shit, most of us don't live worth a shit from 25-50, that's why those years fly by so fast. But it you had billionses of dollars, and actually ENJOYED living and didn't have to work or yell at some worthless brats all your life, they'd go by SLOWLy because you were extracting all the life you could out of them, and even moreso because you knew you were going to spend the rest of your life in literal jail (while the rest of the poor fucks end up in figurative jail, just waiting to croak).
Shocked to discover that Ledezma has zero morals. Shocked. At least Zip chooses to do it out of his fucked up moral compass.
It doesn't matter how sweet you make the 25 years. I turn it down cold without a worry to the alternative.
Tahoe 03-14-2009, 08:39 PM I don't think anyone takes this question seriously. With exception of Zip, maybe.
What fucking part of No NO NO NO NO NO don't you take seriously?
Timone 03-14-2009, 08:43 PM I didn't read your post. pwnt
Tahoe 03-14-2009, 08:45 PM So whats up?
Timone 03-14-2009, 08:56 PM Nothing much, bro. Just trying to figure out what to do. Looking down and laughing at McLain gets boring.
You?
Glenn 03-14-2009, 08:57 PM Looks like we need a "LDB @ 20K" thread soon.

Cool.
So whats up?
Timone 03-14-2009, 08:59 PM Fuck you.
I knew that was coming.
Tahoe 03-14-2009, 09:00 PM Looks like we need a "LDB @ 20K" thread soon.
He'll prolly hit it tomorrow sometime.
Timone 03-14-2009, 09:00 PM I can pull my disappearing act, if you guys want.
Yes!!!
Tahoe 03-14-2009, 09:03 PM Don't do it.
Zip Goshboots 03-14-2009, 11:01 PM Shocked to discover that Ledezma has zero morals. Shocked. At least Zip chooses to do it out of his fucked up moral compass.

That's because you're a lying pussy. You'd do it in a heartbeat. Any smart guy would.
Zip Goshboots 03-14-2009, 11:01 PM What fucking part of No NO NO NO NO NO don't you take seriously?
The part that says you're full of shit.
Tahoe 03-14-2009, 11:21 PM Hey, you go ahead on to your 'federal fuck-me-in-the-ass' prison. I want no part of it. Have fun though.
Timone 03-14-2009, 11:22 PM Come on, not everyone gets ass fucked in prison!
Zip Goshboots 03-14-2009, 11:28 PM Not everyone gets fucked in prison, but just about everyone seems to fantasize about it!

Timone 03-14-2009, 11:31 PM Yeah, nothing wrong with that, Tahoe. Whatever floats your boat.
http://fadodado.nomadlife.org/drive%20boat.jpg
Tahoe 03-14-2009, 11:34 PM No boat gettin floated at all. And it ain't just that, its all the other shit. Fuck that shit, fuck that shit, fuck that shit. No fucking way in hell I want to go to prison. Fuck it. No fucking way. Fuck all y'all.
Zip Goshboots 03-14-2009, 11:36 PM Shit, at 50, after a life of fucking bitchez and living large, and then you get three squares and all the smokes you want and you can lift weights for four hours a day? No worries about retirement, no kids abandoning you to a rest home, no grand children to babysit, and no wife to nag you to death?
And all you got to do is make license plates for 8 hours a day? SIGN ME UP, BITCHEZZ
Timone 03-14-2009, 11:38 PM Tahoe, you need to stop worrying about having your shit pushed in, and get a beer or 18.
Tahoe 03-14-2009, 11:39 PM Fucking balogna sandwiches. I've made it to county a couple times. Its fucked up. A dude taking a shit a foot away from you while you are trying to sleep.
In a little fucking cell for 23 a day. No fucking way homes.
Tahoe 03-15-2009, 12:07 AM I think this was yesterday.
McALESTER, Okla. — A 23-year-old inmate beaten to death at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary had been put in a cell with convicted killer he had testified against.
Pharaoh 03-15-2009, 01:02 AM I think this was yesterday.
That's cause your American prisons are fucked up.
Back to the question:
If you asked me this when I didn't have kids I would have gone for it.
25 years of living it up, doing whatever/whoever the fuck I wanted to would be paradise.
Let's face facts: A 50 year old prisoner is treated slightly different from the young bucks. And remember that I would have to go to an Australian prison, not some USA prison where everyone gets ass raped or whatever.
However, now that I have 2 kids I could not take the deal. I honestly don't think I could be seperated from them for long periods of time. How often would they be able to visit? Do they have kids? Are they rich? lol
Gotta say no - I'm not living large right now but I'm doing alright.
geerussell 03-15-2009, 05:21 AM By that I mean if you are just going to look for ways to circumvent the hypothetical, then sure, you can do that.
Ok, in all seriousity then... pass. Fuck prison. I'd eat a bullet before I'd do a bid.
Wilfredo Ledezma 03-15-2009, 12:22 PM Shocked to discover that Ledezma has zero morals. Shocked. At least Zip chooses to do it out of his fucked up moral compass.
It doesn't matter how sweet you make the 25 years. I turn it down cold without a worry to the alternative.
The question was presented odd.
Do I know that I'm going to prison when I turn 50 upon being rich in my 20's or whatever?
If I know that the only reason I'm rich now is that I'll have to spend my life behind bars in the future, then it will surely change the situation I have now.
If I got millions right now...
- I'd drop out of college
- I'd buy a Hummer, a membership to Augusta National Golf Course, and a massive home on Hilton Head Island
- I wouldn't get married or have children since there'd be no point, knowing that I'd have to abandon them once I turn 50
- When I turn 49, I will donate all of whats left to the Heritage Foundation
- When I'm 50, I'll be ready for prison

For that, I'd hope they DON'T send you to prison and instead leave your broke ass on the curb in Halrem to live out your days in a cardboard box under some bridge.
Wilfredo Ledezma 03-15-2009, 01:03 PM It's better than giving money to garbage, not-for-profit organizations like PETA or LGBT groups.
Pharaoh 03-16-2009, 06:41 AM - I'd drop out of college
- I'd buy a Hummer, a membership to Augusta National Golf Course, and a massive home on Hilton Head Island

And that's the most thought anyone probably gave to the question.
Gl'enn should give you a prize or something
Uncle Mxy 03-16-2009, 07:08 AM To me, the most interesting part of the question is the notion of living to age 50 and beyond, and perhaps having a prison-free life until the age of 50. There's no guarantees in life, so some "magical" entity that offers me an honest-to-goodness guaranteed life and lifestyle has appeal. Actually, I'd question my sanity for actually believing any such offer, but it's not like I'm particularly sane to begin with... no great loss there. :)
The billionaire part is almost superfluous. If I were guaranteed to be immortal, healthy, and out of prison from 25-50, I could leverage that into a fortune doing things that would be a sacrifice of life and liberty for others. "I can't die or get hurt and I can prove it. For $10 billion, I will sell my DNA and blood to a big biotech firm so they can figure out why." I'm assuming that world governments couldn't imprison me to 'eminent domain' my body from 25-50.
As hypothetical questions go, this falls in the realm of fantasy and science fiction. Treat it like such, drive it to its logical end, and you have yourself a topical Twilight Zone/Outer Limits episode.
Pharaoh 03-16-2009, 07:15 AM Mxy - there is more to you than the NBA board. I should venture out this way more often.
