Allen Iverson speaks about back injury, coming off the bench
by A. Sherrod Blakely Thursday March 05, 2009, 12:48 PM

AUBURN HILLS -- Allen Iverson was at The Palace of Auburn Hills this morning receiving treatments for his sore back.
Although he wasn't available to the media, he did release the following statement:

"I'm disappointed that the soreness I'm feeling in my back is going to force me to miss two weeks of action. After talking with the doctors at Georgetown yesterday they have told me that treatment and rest is the best course of action right now. Hopefully my back (will) heal and I'm ready to go following this two-week period.
"My goal is to help this team win a championship and I've said that from the first day I arrived here in Detroit. I'm going to do what ever it takes to help us achieve our goals as a team regardless if I'm starting or coming off the bench."

Cause his last comment was about his refusal to come off the bench.

I don't care if his dog wrote it. He put it out there and he knows what it says. It represents him.

His dog? That's just silly. Dogs can't write.

One thing flying over people's heads is whether Iverson can live with less minutes, coming off the bench means nothing if we are still smallballing to get minutes evened out.

So who loses minutes with AI coming off the bench, Bynum or AA? I'd expect AA, but I'd almost rather AI playing 2.

I'd love to give AA a chance and let him continue his development. Letting AI run the point let's him control the ball and having AA out there to just work the defensive end and take open jumpers that come to him isn't all that bad. It just seems like he hasn't been hitting them lately, not that Bynum has been that much better as a spot shooter.

Basically, whether AI is out there as a 2 or 1 doesn't really matter. Whoever the other guard is just has to get him the ball, hit a few open jumpers, and play solid defense.

Who cares whether Iverson can live with it. It's Curry's job to make sure the minutes are distributed proportionately and with the right combination to give the Pistons the best chance to win. If that's 15 minutes, fine. If it's 30, great.

I'm not surprised by this at all. Iverson's game doesn't fit with the Pistons, but he's done his best to fit in and always played hard. That said, I can't wait until he's no longer a Piston.

Ok i see theres some barrier of communication on what we've been doing with benched starting SG's, which is fumbling out as many minutes as possible(so much that we've even pushed stuckey the bench late in games). I guess everyone here is confident that curry will drop his minutes properly.

I think its going to be rough personally. career 42 percent shooter shooting about that with us even with more open shots than he's ever had in his career. I personally wish he'd work on his spot up jumper and 3 pointer. He'd be light years more efficient in his shooting percentage adding that to the mix.

And the minute distribution is on Curry, not Iverson. Curry has to show me he will drop his minutes to the appropriate amount that gives the Pistons the best chance to win.

Barring injury, Iverson shouldn't be on the floor in crunch time ever, due to his defensive deficiencies, IMO. But I'm not confident Curry will see it that way.

I don't care about the blame game, I was making a point that if we give iverson the minutes that he wants(which is somewhat likely imo), then its still counterproductive. You said who cares, and i'm saying you should if you care about winning.

As far as blame goes, yes Curry is a pussy scared of bruising superstar egos and yes Iverson is lip service inefficient shooter with no idea of how to "play hard" in the areas where we need him(i.e. defense). You can say we ask too much of a first time coach to deal with trying to fit iverson into our team(he has a track record of breaking coaches of all shapes and sizes), or that it's not iverson's fault he's out there in a smallball lineup being made a scapegoat by some media personnel. Either way dont care who's blamed, care about playing pistons basketball(half court execution, defense, ball movement, and rebounding..fuck trying to run like the suns to cater to a player who can't shoot efficiently in the half court).

If iverson can play under control and more efficiently in the halfcourt and Curry can grow a sack we can make this semi-work. Dont know if both those things have any shot of happening.

Either that, or AI exhibits enough production where he forces his way into the starting lineup, then leads us to a championship just to show us that he's the greatest and we were all wrong about him. I'll live with that. ;)

Iverson breaks his silence again:

Detroit— Ex-NBA star Allen Iverson says he would love to forget the years he lived in Detroit, but his off-court nemesis won't let him.

Iverson sat for a combative deposition in August during which he spoke for the first time about a much-publicized Detroit bar fight that led to him being sued for $2.5 million in federal court. Iverson won the case Tuesday when a judge dismissed the lawsuit.

The deposition pitted Iverson against Washington, D.C., lawyer Gregory Lattimer, who won a $260,000 judgment against Iverson a few years ago. The deposition started ugly, ended with an insult, and in between featured more trash talk than an NBA regular season game.

The deposition transcript, obtained by The Detroit News, reads like a bad 1970s movie as a profane Iverson trades barbs with the lawyer and reflects on a controversial life and career.

"I die before I let you get me this time," Iverson tells the lawyer. "I'm as clean as the Board of Health man."

PHILADELPHIA—Following the announcement Saturday that a deal had been reached to end the league-wide lockout, an exuberant Allen Iverson told reporters that every single NBA player, a group that "includes myself, obviously, because I am a current NBA player," is excited to return to the hardwood.

"It's been a tough time to be an NBA basketball player, but we—and by 'we,' I mean the group of 450 players who play in the National Basketball Association, of which I, absolutely, no question, am still a member—are looking forward to putting this all behind us and getting back out there," said Iverson, who hasn't worn an NBA uniform in nearly two years. "I'm really proud of the way we stuck together during negotiations, and I think we have a great new deal in place that finally allows us to focus on doing what we do best: playing the game of basketball."

"By the way, when I say 'we' and 'us,' I am using the collective nouns inclusively to refer to myself as part of a group," Iverson continued, "and in this case that group is composed of players in the National Basketball Association—of which I am decidedly a part. Understand?"

Iverson, who hasn't played professional basketball since his one-month stint in 2010 with Besiktas Cola Turka of the Turkish Basketball League, said that fans can expect all NBA players to be ready for the opening tipoff, and that as an active member of a 15-man NBA roster himself, he will certainly be no exception. Moreover, Iverson reported that he is looking forward to reuniting with his teammates, which he said he "most definitely has, because obviously everyone on an NBA team has teammates, and therefore, I, the NBA's Allen Iverson, have teammates."

While Iverson noted that a 66-game season is far from optimal, he said that—because he is just like every other player who spends the majority of his time participating in both home and away games as part of a rigid schedule that he must adhere to as a contracted member of the National Basketball Association—the only thing he's focusing on now is the NBA championship, a title Iverson stated he is eligible to win because of his current status as a full-time salaried professional player at basketball's highest level.

Iverson added, more or less unprompted, that on forms where he has to list his occupation, he writes, "NBA basketball player," because, according to Iverson, "I am one."

"I think we're all looking forward to getting out there and putting on a show for these fans," said Iverson, who at press time is not listed as an active player on a single NBA roster. "Guys like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, me, Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul—we're showmen. All of us. See, I'm in the group I just mentioned, because they are current NBA All-Stars and so am I. If I weren't in the NBA, I wouldn't have put my name in there, but I am in the NBA. I am."

Taking a moment to reflect upon the recent labor agreement, the former Philadelphia 76er told reporters that at times he was nervous the 2010-2011 season wouldn't be salvaged, an outcome Iverson explained would have affected him much more than, say, players who are no longer in the NBA, a group whose company Iverson stated he is not even close to being in. But Iverson said he was confident a deal would be reached, noting that, ultimately, "NBA players just want to play basketball in the NBA."

"I really love playing basketball," Iverson said. "To be perfectly honest, it's the only thing I can do. Making it to the NBA was my lifelong dream. So you can imagine how we must have felt when we thought the ability to continue that dream was being taken away from us."

"You believe I'm in the NBA, right?" added Iverson, growing visibly emotional. "Because I am. I mean, it's not like I've lost a step. I'm just as quick as I was when I was 22 years old, right? And it's not as if you've watched one the greatest shooting guards of all time physically and mentally deteriorate before your eyes over the past five years, so why wouldn't I be in the NBA? Seriously, can any one of you answer that question? Because I certainly can't. And because I am in the NBA, I guess it's not even a question worth asking. Right?"

Iverson was then cradled by his wife, Tawanna, as he began murmuring, "I'm an NBA basketball player," over and over until he abruptly stopped, sat up in his chair, and stared vacantly at the reporters before him.
