Wiz any comments on the quality of teams they played on? Kiper just rips the line for Stafford as an example. I'm not sure about Stanton.

Stanton threw a lot of short passes, IIRC.

Also, I think this is newthreadworthy.

I would think the quality of team and conference would just even out. You can't tell me that State had more talent in 05' than Georgia did this year. Bottom line is they did about the same with what they had.

I wouldn't want either.

Stanton has no future in this league as a starter. Stafford would be a reach at #1.

I vote Daunte Culpepper, Matt Cassel, or Derek Anderson.

Regardless of Staffords status as a #1 pick, he had the much better season. As we have seen from numerous bowl games, SEC defense>>>>>>Big Ten defense

Stafford lost all his big games...(MSU wasn't a big game since they were inferior)

Stafford is the concensus #1...from what I've seen. He can't be that bad Wil.

Here's my question (keep in mind that I don't like either of them and I'm not interested in making a case for either one).

If their production, when compared as similarly as possible, is fairly close and one of them is already on the team, why in the hell would we burn the #1 pick on the other?

So Jethro, you're saying bring in a vet, give Stanton one more year to prove something, and then go for a QB next year if he doesn't?

Well obviously some of the draft gurus, talent evaluators see something in Stafford. I didn't watch Stafford enough to make a case for him either. But if we just go by stats, Michael Jordan doesn't exactly stand out either.

But I don't want a QB this year unless this cat has something we are all missing. If these knuckleheads choose him, he better be awesome, not just good.

I just don't think that Stafford was as good as Matt Ryan when he came out of the draft, and Ryan wasn't even #1 overall.

Just think of the types of dollars Stafford is going to command. He has the same agent as Ryan, who got the biggest rookie bonus ever last year...

And listening/reading about Stafford, thats the way some feel about him.

Stafford's apparently not going to attend the combine now, at the risk that he may lose some draft stock.

Probably a smart move, he has nothing more to prove as far as being the #1 QB in the class, so nothing positive can really come out of it...

However, it just makes the Lions decision that much more difficult.

I wonder if the other top college QBs stayed in school to ensure that the Lions wouldn't pick them.

To be honest I'm not sure it is possible to ensure not being picked by the lions if you're a good player considering they always have a high draft choice.

They wanted one more year before that fear kicked in. The Lions should be right up there in the top 10 picks again next year.

Going out on a limb there, eh Zek?

From today's Freep chat:

I think with Stanton, there is LESS than meets the eye. He is not an NFL QB. He just isn't. The Lions did not consider playing him ahead of Dan Orlovsky, whom they never saw as more than a backup. If the Lions draft Stafford, Stanton could be cut before next season.

Interesting read on Stafford:

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfcnorth/0-9-44/Finding-context-in-the-Stafford-debate.html

It's a longer read, but the chart is pretty telling.

Stafford scored a -4.45, putting him in unflattering surroundings to say the least. You never want to be on a list that includes Jim Druckenmiller and Akili Smith. Stafford's career completion percentage of 57.1 percent and his touchdown-interception ratio of 1.55 were primarily responsible for his poor showing. That left him rated well below USC quarterback Mark Sanchez (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2009&id=24676) and slightly behind Kansas State's Josh Freeman (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2009&id=24693).

Stafford's numbers were dragged down by a freshman season in which Stafford completed 52.7 percent of his passes and threw 13 interceptions against seven touchdowns.

When McShay, Mayock and Jim from Cincinnati express their concerns about Stafford, it's primarily for these reasons: College quarterbacks don't typically improve their accuracy in the NFL. If his decisions were at all suspect against SEC opponents, then it's reasonable to wonder how he will react to professional defenses.
