Winston pleads guilty to assault

By Adam Rittenberg
ESPN.com

Michigan State freshman running back/kick returner Glenn Winston has been indefinitely suspended after pleading guilty Tuesday to assault charges stemming from an off-campus fight in October that seriously injured a Spartans men's hockey player.

Winston pleaded guilty to misdemeanor aggravated assault and misdemeanor assault and battery. He faces up to a year in jail and fines; sentencing is set for April 29.

"Glenn Winston has been suspended immediately and indefinitely from all football-related activities," Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said in a statement.

Another Spartans football player, freshman walk-on Mitchell White, pleaded guilty last month to a misdemeanor assault charge in connection with the incident. White has a sentencing hearing Monday.

Dantonio has not addressed White's status, though both White and Winston remain on the team's official roster.

Michigan State hockey player A.J. Sturges suffered a severe head injury during the fight. Sturges continues to experience headaches but hopes to return to the ice for the 2009-10 season.

Although Winston's suspension is indefinite, his attorney, Jim Newton, told the Lansing State Journal that Winston agreed to a plea deal "to get the matter over with and get on with his classes, and get ready for spring football."

Michigan State opens spring drills March 24.

The 6-2, 218-pound Winston appeared in seven games last fall, including one contest after the incident. He led Michigan State in kick returns with 16 for 364 yards and also had three rushing attempts.

Michigan State running back Glenn Winston will be released from jail on August 13th, having served enough time to warrant an early release. Winston assaulted a Spartan hockey player during an off-campus melee last spring.

If the worst thing that happens in a program under Dantonio is a fight between some of the football players and some of the hockey players, I'll take it. We definately aren't the one with media/perception issues at the moment.

The worst part is that Winston beat the shit out of the hockey player. Had it not been so one sided, he would still be on the team and our starting running back heading into the season.

so you adopt the 6 year old defense, which is bad enough. but its not even the worst part (i had to look it up to see what you were referring to)

Jackson was charged with felonious assault in the summer of 2003. A 26-year-old man accused Jackson of striking him in the right eye with a bottle on June 1, requiring 17 stitches, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. [3]

On February 19th, 2009, Jackson won the civil lawsuit regarding this incident[4]. Not only did the jury find Jackson not liable for any damages, they rejected the claim that he attacked the plaintiff with a bottle, found the plaintiff guilty of defamation and malicious prosecution, and awarded Jackson $225,000 in damages.

Quick question: should we make a big deal that Winston was just reinstated on the MSU football team after his jail term? I mean, I'm sure DocTre would create at least three threads if this was Michigan reinstating a convict.

I just wanted to check the rules first.

At least one sparty is none too pleased about winston's transition from jail cell to football field.

http://noise.typepad.com/hey_joe/2009/08/sturges-speaks.html

My name is A.J. Sturges and this is my statement regarding my assault, injuries and the reinstatement of Glenn Winston to the Michigan State football team.

In my opinion, the immediate reinstatement of Glenn Winston to the football team reflects very poorly on Michigan State Athletics. This decision has established weak precedent for future athletes involved in violent crimes.

Last October, I was assaulted by Glenn Winston. This was not a fight, or a disagreement. I was in bed in my room and came downstairs after hearing the commotion caused by three cars pulling up filled with screaming and violent people. I was standing in my front yard trying to figure out what was going on when Glenn Winston punched me in the head from the side. I never saw him. I did not have any chance to protect myself at all. Neither did his other victims.

That night, I received a fractured skull, five stitches inside my mouth, and a subdural hematoma, or bleeding on the brain. I was not involved in a college fight, as this story is perceived. After having nothing to do with any events that occurred earlier that night, I was attacked in my own house.

I would like to rip you and the Michigan hypocrites here though. There is a "Poor Sparty" thread in the trash, "Spartan offseason news" which contains nothing but shots at MSU, but if Baker starts a Feagin thread or if Buk posts in the Michigan optimism thread (very funny btw) then we get ripped. Once again, they love to dish it...but they can't take it. I'll say that about Michigan fans until they show otherwise.

I'll also get ripped for passive aggressiveness or backyhanded compliments, yet there isn't a Michigan fan here that has ever truly said something complimentary toward State.

I just read a few more details regarding the Winston case. What happened was a bunch of the hockey players ganged up on one of the football players at a party over a girl. They beat him up pretty good. When a bunch of the football players found out about it that night (Winston included), they went to the party to settle the score because the hockey players ganged up on one of their guys all by himself. Did Winston go too far? Yup. But if any of you wouldn't come to the defense of your friend and teammate like this, then you are a chump. Trying to find issue with this kid being able to play after paying his debt and considering the situation is ridiculous. I wouldn't want to play for a football team if the players didn't defend their own.

Give me a break, Michigan fans were pushing Tom Brady out the door the day Henson arrived. Now they want to claim him as their own.

You gotta love a justice system where you get 24 days in jail for being drunk & high while killing another human being. But you get 2 years for having an unregistered gun 2 days after your teammate was robbed at gunpoint.

Anyone else find it funny that NONE of the National Media guys mention his teammate being robbed? I'm sure Valenti was all over this and made you feel like it was okay for him to be doing this. I'm not in any position to tell anyone how to live their life, but if your teammate was JUST robbed at gunpoint and you need to carry a gun to stay safe.............maybe you don't go out to clubs. Maybe you just go to a nice dinner with friends or you go see a movie.

P.S. Did anyone see Shawn Merriman's tweet regarding Plax...........f*cking classic. Easily one of the top 5 tweets EVER!!!

Burress has always been a fucking idiot. Just another worthless thug jackass. What the hell kind of name is Plaxico anyway? However, he did stay out of trouble while in EL.

Burress was the quintessential Saban recruit. Super-talented JUCO who maybe saw a classroom once in a while. I realize Dantonio is schlepping a bit of baggage named Winston right now (hey, I would have kicked that fucking little pussy hockey player`s ass, too. and the Detroit kids are generally so fucked up, having an actual male role model might save this kid`s life), but Dantonio`s caliber of recruit compared to Saban`s is incomparable.
