Are the Steelers the greatest franchise ever? (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=fleming/090121&sportCat=nfl)

It's possible. I would not give it to the Yanks. Buying championships doesn't win in my book.

I think I might say the Celtics. They were winning against some pretty stiff competition in the Lakers. The Steelers haven't been winning over other dominant teams. In 2006, they beat two flawed teams (Indi prior to playing any defense, and Denver with Plummer at QB) before beating a not so great Seahawks team.

Back in their heyday, the only other dominant teams were Oakland and the Rams. It was definately impressive to win 4 in 6 years, but the Celtics won 8 in a row (10 of 11). They also won 3 more in the 80's (and lost two more) when the Lakers were also stocked.

If they win this year, they still haven't beaten the Pats with Brady in the playoffs

Well, you can call it buying championships, and I won't disagree, but I'm going to give it to the Yanks anyway. The Celtics are certainly in the conversation.

I know UxKa disagrees.

At least we know who isn't the greatest franchise ever...

- Chicago Cubs
- Cleveland Cavaliers
- Cleveland Browns
- Cleveland Indians
- Detroit Lions

Process of elimination.

What have they done lately?

Haven't won in 8 years (not that long, but for spending 200 mil a year...)

Only 4 titles in the last 30 years (again, not too shabby, but with that payroll...)

Signed Burnett, Sabathia, and Teixeira -- haven't you heard?

Does their payroll make it less fun to be a fan of them? If not, why would it be considered in the equation?

I don't mind the NYY spending sprees each offseason. It hasn't gotten them anywhere since the decade started, so it's comical if nothing else.

Just like the Dallas Cowboys.

I guess it all depends on what your standards are. You can say that I'm probably treating it as a lifetime achievement award.

UxKa will be here to remind you of the Cowboys' 5 Superbowl victories shortly.

LDB, what about the Montreal Canadiens then?

24 Stanley Cups are impressive and they would be included in the conversation if I knew anything about hockey.

I would agree, Yankees are the gold standard in North American professional sports.

I just don't think it's the Steelers, OKAY??

NBA- 1) Lakers, 2) Celtics, 3) ?

NHL- 1) Canadiens, 2) Red Wings, 3) Leafs

MLB- 1) Yankees, 2) Dodgers, 3) Red Sox (I'm being generous on the Red Sox, that 100+ yr drought was killer)

NFL- No idea...49ers? Cowboys? Steelers? Packers? you can mix & match all day long

I will say this, PIT is a top 2 or 3 organization in the NFL. They have been very well run.

I agree. The Pack hasn't done much since the 60's anyway.

Man, that's a good one right there. In the NBA it pretty much IS the Lakers and Celtics, then everyone else. The Bulls had one of the best runs in sports history in the 90s, but would you even consider putting them in the convo? I'm not sure.

And as far as the Canadiens being #1 in the NHL.... I don't know shit about hockey, so pardon me if I come off as a little ignant here, but I'm going to take a page out of Chris' book-- what have they done lately? Educate me plz

Yeah, it's hard to compare all those titles way back in the day to today. I mean the Canadians certainly rattled off a lot of titles, but against 5 other teams remember. How many of those were after expansion?

Steelers certainly have to be mentioned in the best ever, if not the best.

I agree with the Yankees being right there too and the Celts.

To settle it, I'd say we'll need a gym and some gloves.

I checked. 10 cups since the NHL first expanded, but only 2 in the last 30 years. Only one division title (last year) in 25 years.

I have a hard time bagging on them for that when the Wings went 40 years without a cup.

Ok, back to the topic.

I don't think there is a team that is more respected than the Steelers.
