View Full Version : Shaq/AI
Joe Asberry 01-25-2009, 01:04 PM to quote the only Pistons real insider Peter Vecsey:
Don't be surprised if Pistons president Joe Dumars trades A.I. before the Feb. 19 deadline, the same team executive e-mailed. "But only if he can get back a similar expiring contract."
Phonix goes back to smallball with Amare beeing the focus on offense, we add Shaq who's in really good shape. Shaq makes 20 mil this and next year.
we can add Kwame if they need another big body back...
Shaq
Wallace
Prince
RIP
Stuckey
Amare
?
Jrich
AI
Nash
the other bigman with a similar contract would be JO, but JO suckz...Odom maybe another possibilty
Timone 01-25-2009, 01:19 PM I like that deal a lot, at least from an "on the court" standpoint. Assuming Shaq would actually be playing.
WTFchris 01-25-2009, 03:14 PM The only problem is that an AI for Shaq deal makes both teams adjust A LOT before the playoffs. I can't think of two more different players.
Zekyl 01-25-2009, 03:20 PM It would be interesting for sure. Shaq still comes off the books in time for that big free agent spending spree, but we'd have no way of going after anyone this offseason. How much is Shaq going to even have in the tank for next year? It gives Sheed the ability to play his lazy 3pt style that he's been leaning towards all season, gives us an inside presence on defense, and still gives us a "star player". I'd do it depending on what we thought we could get in free agency this offseason compared to having Shaq.
WTFchris 01-25-2009, 03:23 PM I think I would do it either way. Right now we really aren't set up to win it all. Assuming Shaq stays healthy we'd have a better shot.
Zekyl 01-25-2009, 04:02 PM Rip back to the starting lineup, give Afflalo the chance to prove he can be our backup SG. Who knows how that whole thing would work out if we did this trade. Its not going to happen, but I wouldn't mind if it did.
BubblesTheLion 01-25-2009, 10:28 PM Why would the Suns do this right when Shaq and finding a groove with Phoenix and making them a more legit playoff team?
RegicideGreg 01-25-2009, 11:13 PM Wouldn't that break the golden rule of NBA trades from Phoenix's standpoint, never trade big for small?
WTFchris 01-25-2009, 11:17 PM It would also make the Suns smaller than they were before the Marion/Shaq trade. Amare goes back to center and they have no PF's. They'd definitely want Amir or Max, if they were interested at all. There is no way they get by Bynum/Gasol with only Amare up front.
Glenn 01-26-2009, 08:20 AM I hate Shaq with a passion, but if he didn't have another year on his deal after this one at $20m+, I'd probably do this.
The Pistons would be a better team now if this deal happened, but I'm not sure they'd be a better team next year.
Pharaoh 01-26-2009, 09:37 AM Poor deal for both teams IMO.
We'd be better now, but next season we'd suffer for it. Since we wouldn't win it all with Shaq this season then why bother?
The Suns wouldn't do it, because as Chris said they'd be very small up front after this deal.
Would we expand the deal to send them Max or Amir? Who would the Suns send back if we included one of them?
Black Dynamite 01-26-2009, 09:53 AM a phar sighting? Shit!
Black Dynamite 01-26-2009, 09:54 AM ,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Pharaoh 01-26-2009, 10:28 AM Yeah, I'm back!
Bout fucking time. Also, WB!
Pharaoh 01-26-2009, 11:36 PM LMAO
Am I gonna have to post a life update for everyone on the NBA board?
MoTown 01-27-2009, 11:25 AM Yes. Please include all reasons why you left us for nearly two years and an update of your weekly dinner schedule.
Glenn 01-27-2009, 11:33 AM mmmmmm dinner
Kstat 02-02-2009, 01:23 PM Shaq has had a great year in Phoenix, but in doing so he's hurt the up-tempo offensive flow of Nash and upset Amare, since he can't get out and run as much and isnt the main offensive focus.
trading shaq for iverson allows both teams to stay competitive until 2010.. It gives Phoenix back their run-and-gun mentality that made them a contender, and allows Detroit to go back to its smashmouth. halfcourt mentality, which apparently is the only way curry knows how to coach (and cant even do that well).
It also alleviates $20 million off of Phoenix's salary for next season. Meanwhile, Shaq's deal is up in 2010 which keeps Joe's master plan intact.
For Detroit:
Shaq
Sheed
Tayshaun
Rip
Stuckey
For Phoenix:
Lopez
Amare
Richardson
Iverson
Nash
lastly, dealing Iverson for shaq puts us back under the luxury tax this season, so count davidson in.

Tahoe 02-02-2009, 01:26 PM I guess feels this is no longer 'fun'
Kstat 02-02-2009, 01:27 PM no shit?
Nevermind, I guess Joe beat me to this one.
Glenn 02-09-2009, 11:10 AM Anybody know how much (if any) cap space we'd still have if this deal happened?
I'm guessing not much.
I'd stay away from this, as I am sure Joe will.
WTFchris 02-09-2009, 11:31 AM You'll need to be more specific (there are 3 trades in this thread).
Glenn 02-09-2009, 12:02 PM Thread title, sorry.
WTFchris 02-09-2009, 12:50 PM A straight up AI/Shaq deal would only effect next year's cap (then Shaq would expire). We'd definitely be over the cap next year.
Right now we have 33 mil on the books for next year, that would make it 53. But, that number doesn't show Max's extension (which is 5 mil a year, not sure how much in year #1). That puts us at 58 mil. The cap for next year is $58.86 million. I would assume we'd just pick up the option year on Bynum. Then we'd have the MLE to adress any holes not filled with picks. Not sure if Sheed or Dyess would stay a couple years cheaper. Even if Kwame left it wouldn't give us more than the MLE. The good news is we'd be far from tax level so no reason not to use the MLE.
as for 2010, we'd have about 30 mil committed (Tay, RIP, Stuckey, AA, Max), plus draft picks. If we used the MLE this year that's another 6 mil (guessing). There'd still be about 20 mil to spend on Bosh and other FA's to fill out the roster. If we didn't have the MLE on the books there'd be 26 obviously. That's enough for Bosh and a 2nd tier center to play next to him (Camby?, Miller?, Memo?, Chandler?). Or if Amir pans out we can sign a bench wing with the rest of that money (Howard, Mike Miller). If we use the MLE this year, then we'd have space for Bosh and nothing more than a vet backup probably.
Glenn 02-09-2009, 12:52 PM Is Davidson willing to suck another year to get to 2010?
Glenn 02-09-2009, 12:54 PM I thinking about this from a season tickets and attendance standpoint, mostly.
WTFchris 02-09-2009, 12:55 PM Well, trading for Shaq actually helps in that regard. With Stuckey, RIP, Tay, Max, Amir we definately wouldn't suck. That would still be a playoff team (but probably not a contender). If you could convince Dyess to stay another year (or Sheed) that would be ideal. That's why AI and Sheed for Shaq and Amare would be best (even if Amare left you'd be better next year). Or, simply move Sheed for a big with an extra year left to bridge the 1 year gap. Trouble is you won't know if they'd take a one year deal before having to trade Sheed.
