Tahoe 01-15-2009, 03:41 PM The Frazier thing was just odd to me from the begining. Tahoe 01-15-2009, 03:44 PM Now go get Floyd Reese to help him get the players he needs. We need someone to give our front office some cred. Zekyl 01-15-2009, 03:45 PM We interviewed 3 minority candidates didn't we? Doesn't matter anymore, we got Schwartz, so where do we go from here? Coordinators? Draft? What's our direction now? Zekyl 01-15-2009, 03:47 PM Several media outlets, including ESPN and NFL.com, are announcing that Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has been named the Lions' new head coach. Schwartz was a finalist, along with Miami Dolphins assistant coach Todd Bowles. Schwartz and Bowles are the only two candidates who are believed to have had a second interview. That second interview included a meeting with owner William Clay Ford I heard it was a 4 year deal (sounds about right), didn't hear a dollar amount. Tahoe 01-15-2009, 03:47 PM I would think Scwartzy would want to get a staff going pretty quick. Just don't hire any son-in-laws Zekyl 01-15-2009, 03:48 PM Bowles for D-Coordinator, we already interviewed him, that's probably why. Does that help? Glenn 01-15-2009, 04:31 PM Detroit Lions to name Jim Schwartz as head coach By Bill Shea Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will be introduced Friday at the new head coach of the Detroit Lions, the team said in a statement Thursday afternoon. A time for the press conference hasn’t been set. Schwartz, 42, replaces Rod Marinelli, who was fired Dec. 29 after the Lions became the first NFL team to finish a season 0-16. “After an extensive search that included several highly-qualified coaches, we are thrilled that Jim Schwartz will become our team’s head coach. (General Manager) Martin (Mayhew) and I believe that Jim’s qualifications and vision will lead this organization on the field toward our goal of becoming a championship football team,” Lions team president Tom Lewand said in a statement. The Titans’ defense gave up 14.6 points per game, good for second in the NFL. The Lions’ 32.3 points per game was the NFL’s worst. Schwartz, a Baltimore native, is known as a statistics-minded coach and has an economics degree from Georgetown University. He was with the Titans for 10 seasons, the past eight as defensive coordinator. Prior to joining Tennessee, Schwartz was an assistant/quality control coach with the Baltimore Ravens for three seasons, which included coaching the linebackers. Before the Ravens moved to Baltimore from Cleveland in 1996, he was in the Cleveland Browns personnel department for three seasons as a college and pro scout under then-head coach Bill Belichick. Schwartz began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Maryland and later the University of Minnesota. He was a college assistant at North Carolina Central and Colgate before joining the Browns. WTFchris 01-23-2009, 01:20 PM Jim Schwartz won't call defensive plays for Lions by Tom Kowalski Friday January 23, 2009, 12:10 AM MOBILE, Ala. -- Jim Schwartz spent each of his 13 NFL seasons focusing on just the defensive side of the ball, but that ended the day he was named coach of the Detroit Lions. Unlike previous Lions head coaches who spent a majority of their time dealing with their specialty -- Rod Marinelli on defense and Steve Mariucci and Marty Mornhinweg on offense -- Schwartz plans to divide his attention equally between offense, defense and special teams. Schwartz spent the past eight years as defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans, but he said he will not be calling the unit's plays in Detroit. "I'm going to have enough on my plate," Schwartz said. "I think the head coach's role is to manage the game and his role is to set a clear vision of what he wants the gameplan to be. "There might be a few situations in the game where you say, as the head coach, 'Get me this right here.'" Otherwise, Schwartz said he will "defer to the experts.'' Dave McGinnis, a 23-year NFL coach who spent the past five seasons working under Schwartz as a linebackers coach in Tennessee, thinks Schwartz will be at his best running the entire show. "I've been in this league for a long time and he's one of the most impressive individuals I've ever been around as far as knowledge of this league and every aspect of it," McGinnis said. "I'm not just talking about the coaching part of it, I'm talking about the things that lead up to it. He knows what he's doing, he's extremely smart and he has a plan. "He's a big-picture guy. That's the most compelling thing about him because he understands this league from every aspect." One of the toughest jobs of a head coach is handling the strategy in pressure situations, including clock management, timeouts, review challenges, fake kicks and coin flip strategies. How will Schwartz prepare for those challenges? "I've probably been doing it my whole life, studying the game," said Schwartz, recalling a time when he was 11 years old listening to a game on his radio between his hometown Baltimore Colts and the Lions. "I remember sitting in my dad's room and listening to it and the Colts were leading 10-6 and I vividly remember them calling the game and saying, 'There are 11 guys up on the line. They don't even have a returner back there.' "The Colts got it blocked and the Lions won the game. I said 'Geez, why didn't they take the safety?' " It was Dec. 11, 1977 and the Colts were on their own 21-yard line. There were only 14 seconds remaining in the game. Instead of taking the safety and getting a free kick to drive the Lions back into their own territory, Detroit's Leonard Thompson blocked the kick, picked the ball up at the 2-yard line and scored the game-winning points in the 13-10 victory. Schwartz has continued to work on his gameday strategies, right up to his final days as a coordinator. "There are a lot of things you study," he said. "We'd look at the play-by-plays (and ask), 'Where do you take your timeouts?' We've done a lot of study on how do you conserve one or two seconds. Do you take your timeout before the two-minute warning or right after?' " McGinnis said players respond to Schwartz because his preparedness gives them confidence. "I had a real good teacher in (Titans head coach) Jeff Fisher," Schwartz said. "He's probably one of the premier game-management head coaches. "One of the reasons for that is he doesn't call offense or defense. It's hard to call it when you're worried about game management." |
