View Full Version : Has the recession directly impacted you?

I can't say i know where to draw the line, i mean dropping values in homes is a big deal but you still have your home (most of the time). I myself lost my job of 2 1/2 years due to downsizing and now i sit on unemployment. The worst part of it is im making more now then i was when we were working short weeks and any other job i could get right now being unskilled and all.

Honestly it has barely affected me at all. I mean of course I feel bad for the people losing their jobs, but there has been little impact beyond empathy for people.

My job is going well (company had great year)
My wife and I both have secure jobs that I can't see us losing
We bought a new house, so we won't be trying to sell it or anything
We already have no credit card debt and spend wisely

I would actually say it has slightly been positive for us because the home prices were lower when we bought in August.

I guess we are two of the lucky people that have careers that are in demand. I suppose a lot of that is our doing though.

Yes, it's directly hurt me - not a lot, but it's noticed.
"impacted" seems like the wrong word, somehow.

Why are you spending money on Pepsi and Triscuits? You should be drinking water and eating wonder bread to save yourself some money.

Don't you know how to conserve money!?

For the most "bang for the buck", you go to an el cheapo lunch buffet and eat tons of food. Wonder Bread is a waste of dollars in all circumstances.

the recession has NOT affected me

* my parents pay for my college (only 3 fucking semesters left til i get my god damn degree)

* after losing two accounts receivable jobs in 2007, i've been able to keep my current administrative assistant job for well over a year

* i have no family members who have jobs that relate to the crumbling auto-industry...

* my dads job pays for my medical insurance (mainly just dental & my contacts) and for the time being, my parents also pay my cell phone bill and car insurance

* and finally, gas is lower than it has ever been since i've started driving

Of course, once Obama & all the libs get their agenda in full swing, I'll be no better than anybody else, we'll all be equal...

that's what he plans to do right??? after all, democrats frown upon those who live white-collar lifestyle...

yes, it's impact myself and my family. i'm fortunate that my job is in an industry that's not impacted by the local economy. however, my family owns a small business and they're directly impacted by those around us losing their jobs and tightening their belts. the good news is that they've been able to stay afloat when many around them have gone belly up. they're looking to just sustain their business until we bounce back.

The bit about your parents paying auto insurance amuses me. I couldn't have a car unless I could swing for PLPD as well. The biggest thing my old man did was help shop for the car so I'd avoid getting a lemon. With the exception of a few weeks when I moved back to Michigan and needed an interim place to stay that could hold my stuff, I haven't been living with help from my folks since I was 16.

I dunno about "Democrats frowning upon those who live white-collar lifestyles", but I'm not sure you do either. As far as I can tell, what you have isn't so much a "white-collar" lifestyle, but a "handout from mommy and daddy" lifestyle. A whole lot of Republicans frown on such lifestyles from their kids (often without thinking about how their profligate ways hurt future generations).

Wilfredo Ledezma
01-11-2009, 12:16 PM
Well, I wouldn't say I've totally bummed everything off my parents. I'm blessed to have parents who've worked hard for their success despite growing up in lower-class homes. My dad didn't want myself and my other siblings to grow up the way he did, so he worked his ass off, got a degree, started his own business, and earned a successful lifestyle.

So what does that say for me? Sure, I'll be the first to admit I'm pretty spoiled compared to most people my age. But that's not say I completely rely on my parents.

My parents offer to pay for my college and auto insurance because they have the ability to do so. That doesn't mean I take it for granted. I'm currently in college, working hard towards my bachelor degree. I've never failed a course. I didn't want to dorm somewhere because I didn't want to waste my time getting plastered every night so instead I got a full-time job, take 19 credit hours a semester and will have my bachelors degree by age 21.

Not to mention, I just turned 20 years old in August...I challenge you to find many 20 year olds who have as much accounting experience or are as close to an accounting degree as me...

150 credit hours in 4 years...I'm in a league of my own. So I've put forth enough diligence to warrant my 'perks'..

The Republican thing was more of a stereotype than it was me really taking a poke at Democrats. I grew up in a Christian home, so for my family, it's always been about morals in supporting a political party, rather than which party would be best for our family financially...

Needless to say, the Republican party has always been more 'Christian-friendly' (although of course it's disputable, but pro-life and against gay marriage are the two biggies)...

My dad wouldn't vote for Mitt Romney though, because he's Mormon. But that's a different tangent...

I know that I am buying the Wolverine Gear that I rock at Wal Mart, finally. It's a decision I had to make.
See, I was an Elitist Snob, and only bought my gear at Target. But no more.
For instance:
A Michigan hat at Target: $19.99; at Wal Mart: 11.37
A Michigan Sweathsirt at Target: 28.99; Wal Mart: 16.28

With all the savings, I have been able to avoid laying off my maid, cook, and chauffeur. However, the personal masseuse had to go. Besides, the maid gives better head, and can double up by giving me a massage and then blowing me and then cleaning up the mess at ONE price. A Michigan Man has got to do what a Michigan Man has got to do.

So I got laid off from my bookkeeping job today via phone call. How lame is that?

I was hardly a blip on the payroll ($12/hr; 32 hrs a week) yet they think that saving the nickles & dimes are going to pull them out of the rut. I worked at a bandsaw manufacturing company and I basically just operated AP/AR, payroll, and billing.

In recent weeks I had already been cut from $20 to $12 per hour and was told to stop coming in on Fridays (thus making me part-time since I was no longer working 40 hrs per week). And that still wasn't enough.

Getting my degree cannot come fast enough. I'm sick of this hourly pay shit. It's so easy to get rid of people like me.

Whatever. Fuck the state of Michigan. The day I get my BA I'm off to San Diego. I have an Accounting job waiting for me at Qualcomm.

But until then, at least I got some resume' fodder out of this part-time, bottom of the barrell hourly shit.

At least I'll have more time to spend on WTF since I have nothing to do from 8 AM-4 PM on weekdays, now.

^^^What I want to know is why it's so easy to get rid of people like Will Ledezma.

Is he a bad worker?
Does he often show up to work completely bombed out of his mind?
Has he (like me) brought one sexual harrassment suit after another to his company?
Does he (like Tahoe) steal from the company?
Does he (again, like me) fart constantly, and so smell up the place that at least 4 people per day die from the fumes?

Or is he, like 99.8% of Message Board Guys, perfect, and is just the victim of equal employment or a boss whose wife just found out he has been fucking the janitor and the family dog and was just out to get someone?

Wilfredo Ledezma
03-22-2009, 09:39 AM
It's easy to get rid of people like me because I don't have a degree and I'm paid so little.

I don't get benefits or health insurance or shit like that (which doesn't bother me since I wouldn't want to do payroll deduct when I make so little money anyway).

If a company's having to squeeze out minor spending, then might as well get rid of the bottom of the barrell workers such as myself.

Regardless, I liked having a job that related to my career. It's tough to find those when you don't have a degree.

Uncle Mxy
03-22-2009, 11:10 AM
It's easy to get rid of people like me because I don't have a degree and I'm paid so little.
Why would your having a degree and getting paid more make you less easy to get rid of? I certainly don't see that in today's economy. Unemployment is less among folks with college degrees, but their ranks have been rising much faster than blue collar unemployment.

A large local financial-sector business I'm sure you've heard of did a couple rounds of non-commission white-collar layoffs awhile back that were strictly a function of pay. The C-level execs laid off the highest-paid employee in every department, without reading performance reviews or taking input from manager/director sorts who would directly interact with these employees. That way, they maximized financial impact while minimizing headcount loss. That was deemed to be good from an "image" perspective at the time.
