Just heard Gammons on the radio and the topic was pretty depressing.

He said that if things don't turn aroun dramatically by late Spring, that midlevel markets (Detroit, Houston, St. Louis, etc) are likely to start "giving" players away to anyone that will take on the payroll (Yankees, Boston, etc).

He used the Tigers as an example, unfortunately, and said that they could realistically lose $40-$50 million this year.

So if you think there is a "haves and have nots" system already, this year could get even worse.

I don't know about you guys, but when I see the Yankees throwing around the money that they are when the economy is like it is, I get very pissed off.

People are struggling to make ends meet, and the Yankees give a fatass pitcher who has to "work" once every five days a $161 million contract.

Fuck you Yankees.

The thing that pisses me off the most is when both NY teams ask the city for money after spending that kind of jack.

I don't see how the economy effects the Tigers unless attendance slips (which is very possible). On the one hand I would think baseball would suffer more because with all those games there is less chance a family would go to as many home games. On the other hand they are the cheapest by far so people on a limited budget can still take the family there instead of a Wings or Lions game.

Can you imagine if baseball ever adds a salary cap? The greedy, fat-ass players will strike for at least two years. Fuck you, New York.

The revenue sharing model that they have is similar to a (very) soft cap.

The Yankees need to sell those $10K/game seats behind home plate, and folks ain't gonna pay that kind of jack to see Chad Durbin.

They almost need two leagues/divisions.

I heard today that Minnesota's owner is one of the richest dudes in the world and could choose to blow the Yankees out of the water if he wanted to at any point, but chooses not too. It was also discussed that the Yankees routinely lose money, but they want to win at any cost and that any team can choose to lose money if their ultimate goal is to win the W.S.

P.S. It was Colin Cowherd so take it with a grain of salt as he tends to rant.

I don't think the Yankees lose money. They may due to accounting reasons, but not overall. You know, the yankees lose 15 mill but YES makes 25, etc..
