Glenn 12-04-2008, 12:51 PM Surprised they took on his salary, let's see how much they gave up. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-04-2008, 01:00 PM i love the trade... he'll be a fine replacement he should've been a Tiger 2 years ago Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:01 PM No new details, just some contract info. Tigers in serious trade talks for SS Jack Wilson By JON PAUL MOROSI • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • December 4, 2008 Trade conversations between the Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates regarding shortstop Jack Wilson have become “more active and meaningful” in recent days, an official with knowledge of the talks told the Free Press. Detroit has courted Wilson off and on since the 2007 trade deadline, when the sides came very close to a deal. Wilson is due $7.25 million in 2009 and $8.4 million (or a $600,000 buyout) in the following season. In that respect, he fills an important criterion in the Tigers’ search for a shortstop: Wilson’s contract is short enough that prospect Cale Iorg could inherit the everyday job at some point in the 2010 season. Wilson limited to a career-low 87 games in 2008 because of a torn calf muscle and fractured finger. He batted .272 with one home run and 22 RBIs. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-04-2008, 01:01 PM im not sure what we gave up, but my guess it was a 'fringe prospect' type player, perhaps Larish, Hollimon, or somebody of that ilk Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:02 PM I was just going to ask how you could "love the trade" without knowing what they gave up. The Pirates never fail to dump salary at any opportunity. WTFchris 12-04-2008, 01:03 PM I'm cool with it barring giving up too much. That's a good chunk of money, but Edgar is going to get more apparently and everyone else on the market is crap basically (i think there is one decent one, which means more money probably). Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:04 PM This means less money for the bullpen, though. Tahoe 12-04-2008, 01:04 PM I don't like the trade cuz his name doesn't sound like a good SS. Come on...Jack Wilson? Sounds like a pitcher to me. MoTown 12-04-2008, 01:05 PM I don't like the trade cuz his name doesn't sound like a good SS. Come on...Jack Wilson? Sounds like a pitcher to me. Also he is extremely ugly and probably has bad BO. Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:06 PM The Cardinals got Khalil Greene, he might have been a better choice than Wilson. WTFchris 12-04-2008, 01:07 PM Bullpen will come at a discount IMO. Basically there are like 5 teams looking for closers (including us) and like a dozen guys out there who have had 20 saves in the last couple years. There was an interesting article about this. They said K-Rod may have no suitors because of the supply and demand that has resulted from teams promoting closers (ie Manny Corpas in Colorado, etc). Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:08 PM "We" didn't spend any money on the bullpen last year (except for Todd Jones) and see where it got "us"? The same Greene that batted .213 last year? Tahoe 12-04-2008, 01:09 PM The Cardinals got Khalil Greene, he might have been a better choice than Wilson. Sounds like an outfielder. Fool 12-04-2008, 01:09 PM HOLY SHIT HE'S UGLY! WTFchris 12-04-2008, 01:09 PM "We" didn't spend any money on the bullpen last year (except for Todd Jones) and see where it got "us"? That's because "we" thought Zoom was not going to be a piece of shit. I'm quite sure Dave isn't going to count on Zoom and Rodney this year. Tahoe 12-04-2008, 01:09 PM Wow, he looks like he's about 12 MoTown 12-04-2008, 01:10 PM HOLY SHIT HE'S UGLY! And he probably has bad BO. WTFchris 12-04-2008, 01:10 PM That's one stupid grin. Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:10 PM The same Greene that batted .213 last year? Compare their careers. WTFchris 12-04-2008, 01:11 PM I like to get close enough to athletes to smell them. Tahoe 12-04-2008, 01:11 PM I hate shortstops that have a crooked smiles too....and prolly has BO. MoTown 12-04-2008, 01:11 PM ^^I didn't know you could quote thoughts... Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:12 PM new schtick "thought to self:" TTS for short WTFchris 12-04-2008, 01:13 PM Compare their careers. I'll leave that to the experts. All I know is .213 is pretty bad. With Thames and Inge I'm not taking my chances on a guy that slumped that bad. Tahoe 12-04-2008, 01:13 PM I wonder if he ever played football? SS normally have good arms. Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:14 PM I'll leave that to the experts. All I know is .213 is pretty bad. With Thames and Inge I'm not taking my chances on a guy that slumped that bad. Ever heard the "guys are what the back of their baseball card says they are" cliche before? No big whoop, though. Greene has more pop and run producing capability, but the difference otherwise isn't that substantial (salary notwithstanding). DrRay11 12-04-2008, 01:16 PM pedo-shortstop Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:21 PM Pirates GM denies Jack Wilson has been traded By Rob Biertempfel TRIBUNE-REVIEW Thursday, December 4, 2008 Pirates general manager Neal Huntington this afternoon strongly denied Internet reports that shortstop Jack Wilson has been traded to the Detroit Tigers. "No deal has been finalized," Huntington said. Huntington paused and chuckled. "The gossip network is amazing," he said. A source close to Wilson also confirmed that no deal has been done. The Pirates have let it be known that Wilson is available, and the Tigers are among a handful of teams with strong interest. "We have ongoing talks with a number of teams," Huntington said. "But I do not want to comment on any rumors." Tahoe 12-04-2008, 01:22 PM This thread proves that peeps have negative thoughts when it comes to Pirates. Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:23 PM Mlive Pirates deny Wilson deal Posted by Scott Warheit December 04, 2008 12:58PM While one report has the Detroit Tigers acquiring Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson, word out of Pittsburgh is the deal is not done yet, and the Pirates are flatly denying any agreement. December 4, Pittsburgh Post Gazette: 12:46 p.m.: No one has informed Wilson or his agent, Page Odle, of any trade. This is significant because Wilson's limited no-trade clause includes Detroit, and he would have to give his approval. No such approval has happened yet. MoTown 12-04-2008, 01:26 PM Who are you going to believe: Ugly, smelly Jack Wilson or MoTown? You don't even have to answer that. Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:27 PM I really hope they choose me. Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:28 PM (?) WTFchris 12-04-2008, 01:30 PM Ever heard the "guys are what the back of their baseball card says they are" cliche before? No big whoop, though. Greene has more pop and run producing capability, but the difference otherwise isn't that substantial (salary notwithstanding). Wait, you are defending a career .248 hitter? He had one year over 15 HR's. His numbers are basically the same as Inge's. Why wouldn't we just put him at SS if we wanted that production? Why wouldn't we just keep the .290 career hitter with almost as much power? Tahoe 12-04-2008, 01:32 PM Wait, you are defending a career .248 hitter? He had one year over 15 HR's. His numbers are basically the same as Inge's. Why wouldn't we just put him at SS if we wanted that production? Why wouldn't we just keep the .290 career hitter with almost as much power? Remember its Pittsburgh we're talking about here. :) Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:36 PM Wait, you are defending a career .248 hitter? He had one year over 15 HR's. His numbers are basically the same as Inge's. Why wouldn't we just put him at SS if we wanted that production? Why wouldn't we just keep the .290 career hitter with almost as much power? I agree that it's not a strong case, but Greene hit 27 home runs playing in a cavernous ballpark, so at least there is potential for something special there. Wilson does not have the potential to be anything but what he has been. Inge isn't a SS. I don't have a problem with a .290 career hitter with almost the same power if he had the same defensive range and would play for less money. WTFchris 12-04-2008, 01:36 PM No, he's defending Greene who has numbers similar to Inge. WTFchris 12-04-2008, 01:37 PM I agree that it's not a strong case, but Greene hit 27 home runs playing in a cavernous ballpark, so at least there is potential for something special there. I don't have a problem with a .290 career hitter with almost the same power if he had the same defensive range and would play for less money. I'm betting Wilson will cost us a lot less to get, which is key if we're planning on just keeping the seat warm for Irog. Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:37 PM If the Tigers are going to win, they'll need career years from most guys. I'd rather have a career year from Greene than from Wilson, that's all I'm saying. WTFchris 12-04-2008, 01:38 PM True. I would have been fine with Edgar for another year. I doubt he would have had as bad a year. But, I suspect he didn't want a 1 year deal from the contract SF is rumored to have offered him. Fool 12-04-2008, 01:43 PM I bet Dombroski isn't happy with the clause in Wilson's contract that says he requires a locker room without showers. Glenn 12-04-2008, 01:45 PM Apparently the Dodgers are still talking to the Pirates about Wilson. MoTown 12-04-2008, 01:45 PM I bet Dombroski isn't happy with the clause in Wilson's contract that says he requires a locker room without showers. LOL. Apparently he's got the most extensive "no-shower clause" in the MLB. Tahoe 12-04-2008, 01:52 PM No, he's defending Greene who has numbers similar to Inge. WTF do I know? and don't answer that please. Fool 12-04-2008, 01:58 PM AARP benefits. Tahoe 12-04-2008, 02:01 PM WTF do I know? and don't answer that please. eh hem or something. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-04-2008, 03:08 PM The Cardinals got Khalil Greene, he might have been a better choice than Wilson. Hell no. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-04-2008, 03:09 PM Jon Paul Morosi said on freep.com that the Tigs are inching closer in talks to acquire JW. It used to be that the Pirates were a good match for trading partners w/ us since Littlefield is good friends with Dombrowski, but since he's been fired, maybe the process just takes longer... Glenn 12-05-2008, 12:11 PM I'd rather give Omar Vizquel $2m and have him split time with Santiago. MoTown 12-05-2008, 12:13 PM If there was a machine that could return Vizquel to the form of 10 years ago, I'd do it. But I wouldn't touch him now. He never could hit, and he's an average SS at best now. Glenn 12-05-2008, 12:16 PM I haven't checked the stats, but the few times that I saw him last year he still looked pretty good to me. But there must be some reason that the Giants didn't re-sign him (unless he wants to play for a winner). Glenn 12-05-2008, 12:26 PM The Giants haven’t reached the playoffs since 2003 and were in a rebuilding phase last season, going 72-90 while using many young players in key roles. Having a veteran shortstop will be a big help considering Vizquel provided that kind of stability during his four years with the club. “To get somebody with his resume is huge for our ballclub. He’s a winner,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “He’s versatile as far as hitting in the batting order. He helps solidify our defense up the middle. This is a very great sign for us and I couldn’t be more excited to have a player of his caliber.” Sabean said after the 2008 season there was “zero” chance the Giants would bring back the 41-year-old Vizquel despite his popularity and still-reliable defense in the middle of the infield. “Everybody knows Omar is one of the best shortstops in the game,” said the Colombian-born Renteria. “Two Latin guys, All-Stars. To replace Omar, for me that’s an honor.” He only made 2 errors last year and fielded .988. At 1/3 of the pricetag of Wilson, he might still be worth considering. Coupled with Inge, that would certainly make the offense from the left side of the infield soft, but that'll be the case with Wilson, too. WTFchris 12-05-2008, 12:30 PM Yeah, I'd rather have him for that money and spend the extra 6 mil on pitching or catching. Glenn 12-05-2008, 12:38 PM I've been watching this guy too for a while: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6892 He's Hanley Ramirez's backup in Florida, and can also play 2B and 3B Don't know what it would cost to get him, though. Glenn 12-05-2008, 12:41 PM Other free agent SS: On the market Juan Castro (Orioles), Alex Cintron (Orioles), Alex Cora (Red Sox), Craig Counsell (Brewers, has 2009 option), David Eckstein (Diamondbacks), Adam Everett (Twins), Jerry Hairston (Reds), Cesar Izturis (Cardinals), Nick Punto (Twins), Luis Rivas (Pirates). By the way, did you guys know that Renteria hit .296 after the All Star break last year? Wilfredo Ledezma 12-05-2008, 01:07 PM By the way, did you guys know that Renteria hit .296 after the All Star break last year? Yeah but his .OBP was about the same... WTFchris 12-05-2008, 01:21 PM I've been watching this guy too for a while: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6892 He's Hanley Ramirez's backup in Florida, and can also play 2B and 3B Don't know what it would cost to get him, though. You just miss Wilfredo. WTFchris 12-05-2008, 01:24 PM Punto doesn't have much power but he's as good as Wilson and a lot cheaper I bet. Same with Cintron. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-05-2008, 02:58 PM The most Cintron is gonna get is a minor-league deal. I do like Nick Punto. He's a wizard with the glove and can hit a little bit. I just wouldn't bother wasting the money if all we end up with is Adam Everett. I'll even take David Eckstein, or Felipe Lopez... Vinny 12-05-2008, 03:22 PM Fuck Eckstein. He can't play SS. Wilfredo Ledezma 12-06-2008, 12:29 PM According to the Free Press, the Tigs are aggresively pursuing Rangers catcher Gerald Laird, and a deal could be finalized by Monday before the GM Winter Meetings... Rangers like Zach Miner. I'm all for that trade, Laird is a quality defensive catcher and can hit for a decent average compared to most catchers, plus it will allow Dusty Ryan to take the permanent backup role before he's given the starter job a couple years from now Zekyl 12-06-2008, 01:34 PM How did we get Miner? DrRay11 12-06-2008, 01:34 PM How did we get Miner? fail WTFchris 12-08-2008, 03:50 PM LAS VEGAS – Adam Everett has been scheduled for a physical with the Tigers' medical staff, an indication that talks have intensified with the free-agent shortstop.http://pixel.quantserve.com/pixel/p-e4m3Yko6bFYVc.gif?labels=Sports Everett, 31, recently went through a workout aimed at judging the strength of his troublesome throwing shoulder. Tigers officials were encouraged by the results of that session. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on its Web site today that the Tigers “are set to sign” Everett, but that could not be immediately confirmed. Everett played in only 48 games this season with the Minnesota Twins because of the shoulder issues. He batted .213 with two home runs and 20 RBIs. Everett is known for his sound defensive play. He became an everyday shortstop with the Houston Astros in 2003, when current Tigers coach Gene Lamont was a member of Houston’s coaching staff. |
