This has the potential to be ugly. No Suton, Hansborough domination, Morgan and his foul trouble, poor shooting and poor free-throw shooting are not filling me with confidence. MSU is a pretty good team that will get better as the season progresses, but North Carolina is already an extremely good team.

I think MSU will be over-matched and maybe a little star-struck. Hansborough will draw fouls at will on MSU`s big men, thus drastically eliminating their effectiveness. With poor perimeter shooting, its not looking good. MSU will have to hustle to stay within 12. With Suton, within 11.

UNC 87 MSU 71. I hope to be very wrong.

Suton is iffy:

Suton practices, status uncertain vs. Tar Heels

by Steve Grinczel Monday December 01, 2008, 10:00 PM

EAST LANSING -- Michigan State center Goran Suton's spirit is willing, but he won't play against No. 1 North Carolina if his knee is weak.
The senior center practiced Monday for the first time since spraining his left knee in the early stages of the Nov. 19 game at Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne. He didn't participate in any drills where contact could occur.
"Running up and down the court felt the best and I felt pretty good laterally, I really did," Suton said. "It was kind of hard to accelerate and decelerate, and stopping was probably the hardest.
"I did pretty good."
Suton wasn't in uniform for the Old Spice Classic games against Maryland, Oklahoma State and Wichita State in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., during the Thanksgiving weekend.
He said he plans to suit up for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge game against the Tar Heels at Detroit's Ford Field at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday (ESPN), but he doesn't know if he will be able to play.
"This is like before the Final Four," Suton said. "All my heart's really in it, and I want to play so bad. I hope I can get in for even a couple minutes. Mostly, it's my decision depending on how I feel.
"But I don't want to hurt the team if I'm not playing well or because of how hard I can go. I'll let coach worry about that."
Despite the practice and playing time Suton has missed, MSU coach Tom Izzo said he felt he could contribute as soon as his knee is sound enough and fitness level is adequate because of his understanding of the Spartans' schemes.
"He's a very valuable player who would make our other guys better," said Izzo, who will monitor Suton closely Tuesday and before the game.
Suton said he twisted his knee when he got wedged between teammate Raymar Morgan and an IPFW player three minutes into the game.
The Spartans could use the 6-foot-10 Suton's low-post presence against Tar Heels All-American power forward Tyler Hansbrough.
Suton entered the season as the Big Ten's leading returning rebounder with 8.2 per game last season. He also averaged 9.1 points, and after a strong preseason had his sights set on averaging a double-double this season.
Suton scored 10 points and had two rebounds in the opener against Idaho, and he had three points and 10 rebounds while playing hurt against IPFW.
Even if Suton can't play against the Tar Heels or is extremely limited, Izzo exuded confidence after winning two of three games in Florida.
"Are we ready for them?'' Izzo asked. "I don't think there are four or five teams in the country that are ready for them. They are good.
"And yet, are we looking forward to it? Yeah, we are, and hopefully we'll get more ready in the next two days."

This may be Izzo's greatest coaching job.

Oh, what a little loss to Maryland will do to the ever-faithful.

Or the fact that it's a 9:15 PM tip off in downtown Detroit. Not the best circumstances for a Wednesday night game.

I'm in Chicago but I'd go if I was back in Michigan.

Should be a barn burner tonight folks.........

1. It's a 9:15 tip off
2. It's in Downtown Detroit
3. It's on a Wednesday Night
4. Delvon Roe's knees hurt worse than a Las Vegas Hooker
5. Goran Suton can't play and Izzo has no idea why
6. Erazam Lorebeck went pro early
7. The floor at Ford Field will be confusing
8. Raymar Morgan will be in foul trouble because the refs hate him

Are we forgetting anything else? It's hard keeping up with the Spartan Message Boards these days.

Well at least now you know how we feel bro. Anyone seem to recall Tom Izzo using football equipment at basketball practice or the fact that Tom Zibikowski was a boxer.............thank god those two things weren't overplayed on a constant loop.

Yeah, losing to a team of first round NBA talent makes us not elite. See you in March, where the elite programs take care of business.

No offense, D's, but that wasn't losing. That was an execution. I watched the game and didn't understand how that was an MSU team. The Spartans looked God-Awful.

I don't care about the whole elite/not elite debate, but that's a loss that meant a little more than you care to acknowledge.

Getting blown out like that makes you not elite IMO. I think it drops you in the very good category. Doesn't mean they can't learn from this and be elite come march though.

When they won it all I think they got blasted by a few top 10 teams at the beginning of that season.

And we also lost to Wright State I believe that year.

I don't think you can be elite one week and then not elite the next. Elite-ness comes from sustaining winning consistently from year to year. Pretty sure MSU handles that well.

Again, some perspective here. Its UNC. They are #1. Does Duke lose it's elite status when they get blown out come ACC season time? I think not.

Well, MSU is an elite basketball program but that doesn't mean they are elite this year. No way to tell until more of the season progresses. I would say no at this point because they didn't look like they belonged on the floor last night.

I'm pretty sure that Syracuse wasn't considered elite at this time when they won it all.

But, you have to admit this team is not elite at this point in the season for sure.

Ok, fair enough. We are not elite RIGHT NOW.

4 games, 7 days against #1 team in the country. MSU showed flashes in the first half of being able to hang with them. Even down 14 at the half I thought they had a change. Lawson was making 30 footers for Christ sakes. Not normal.

Second half we ran out of gas, plain and simple.

MSU will be fine once the Big Ten rolls around, win the BTT, and make some noise in March. I, for once, am not worried.

Does getting blown out hurt? Hell yeah it does. But deep down knowing that we are better than what we showed against a rested, deep, LOADED UNC team helps me sleep a little better at night. Also, so does the 5 Oberons I had while watching the game.
