View Full Version : Ding Dong Diantoni to Tenn (a thread about Mark Dantonio, apparently) thetwins81 10-30-2008, 07:22 PM The word is he is going to be there number 1 target in the offseason to replace Fullmer. While he go? Should he go? Jethro34 10-30-2008, 07:33 PM I don't think he will go or should go. I referred to this in the past, questioning whether or not he would jump ship like Saban, his former boss and the man who first brought him to EL, if he experienced success. My belief was that he would, and I still think he will someday, but I'm not inclined to think he'll do it this soon. While he only coached at Cincinnati for 3 years before jumping ship, I'm doubtful he would leave MSU after only two. I do think Tennessee has a higher ceiling nationally and it would be an intriguing move for him, returning to the SEC where he played. But my guess is that he has assurances that other big jobs will open up soon enough. Jethro34 10-30-2008, 07:42 PM By the way, the only rumor I could find is actually speculation that if Fulmer is fired, some think Spurrier would replace him and then MD would replace Spurrier at South Carolina. I realize SC is where MD played, and while I think a move to the SEC would be an upgrade over the Big Ten, I think S. Carolina is actually a step down from MSU. Spurrier himself can make them competitive but just not good enough for that conference. Lou Holtz burnt out his last bit there before that. I still don't see MD jumping ship...yet. Not to mention that technically Fulmer still has that job, right? Wilfredo Ledezma 10-30-2008, 07:51 PM Dantonio doesn't seem like the type of guy that would spurn MSU to go elsewhere. Of course, money can change that... Without question Tennessee would pay more, and it's a far more higher profile job, better recruiting, better conference, Knoxville is a great city... It'd be tough to pass up, that's for damn sure... Glenn 10-31-2008, 11:21 AM I think he'll probably wait until the South Carolina gig opens again. D's Nuts 10-31-2008, 12:31 PM Wow, this is a surprise. I don't see Dantonio as the 'jump ship' kind of guy. Nice try scUMmers, you'll be losing to Dantonio for years to come. Black Dynamite 10-31-2008, 01:06 PM Wow, this is a surprise. I don't see Dantonio as the 'jump ship' kind of guy. Nice try scUMmers, you'll be losing to Dantonio for years to come. Don't know about the latter part of that. MoTown 10-31-2008, 01:07 PM Wow, this is a surprise. I don't see Dantonio as the 'jump ship' kind of guy. Nice try scUMmers, you'll be losing to Dantonio for years to come. There is a shitload of confidence coming from a team that won for the first time in 7 tries. WTFchris 10-31-2008, 01:21 PM It's definitely an upgrade to Tenn. SC would be a downgrade because at MSU he can keep MSU in the top 5 in the conference. At SC he'd have to have an amazing season to do that. Of course alumni type stuff plays in, but that doesn't mean you always take a lesser position. bukdow 10-31-2008, 01:50 PM I don`t think Dantonio is going anywhere. He is rebuilding the football program and will go down in MSU history as the coach who accomplished what many couldn`t. I think Dantonio is the type of man who appreciate that type of solid, long term achievement. Dantonio will retire from coaching as the coach of MSU. I think Dantonio is the type of man who appreciate that type of solid, long term achievement. Dantonio will retire from coaching as the coach of MSU. That ending is really up for interpretation. I mean Millen will go down in history as the GM who did what many couldn't. Glenn 10-31-2008, 02:27 PM Dantonio will retire from coaching as the coach of MSU. Build up the program into a national power. Izzo isn't satisfied and wants another banner to hang. I don't think Dantonio would leave before MSU has established consistency over the course of years. Izzo wants a raise, he gets one. If money becomes the issue, I would bet MSU ponies up big time. I do however think that he will not retire as the head coach here. In this day and age that is so rare. Wilfredo Ledezma 10-31-2008, 10:56 PM and will go down in MSU history as the coach who accomplished what many couldn`t. Playing in a January 1 bowl game? Big whoop... Money can change ANYTHING, bukdow. theMUHMEshow 11-01-2008, 01:40 AM The word is he is going to be there number 1 target in the offseason to replace Fullmer. While he go? Should he go? HAHAHA My buddy that does radio for MTSU started this rumor Monday. :D Jethro34 11-01-2008, 08:58 AM I'm sure Cincinnati fans thought MD was built in a different mold and that he would stick around there. Instead he left and took some players with him. History repeats itself. He left for MSU because the money was better, the conference was better, and he had a history at the school. Why would those same things now be null and void if, say, the South Carolina job opened up? Don't think the MSU job is so spectacular that people drool over it and would keep it regardless. That certainly hasn't been evident in your past. D's Nuts 11-01-2008, 04:43 PM I dont view the South Carolina job as more prestigious than MSU. Probably pretty similar. I never said that anyone was drooling over our HC job. Trust me, it's had it's share of pathetic excuses for head coaches. Zip Goshboots 11-01-2008, 08:26 PM No shit, D Nuttz. Souf Carolina? Uh, no thanks, not in the SEC my friend. For that matter, why leave MSU for Tennessee? Fullmer won an NC in '98 and it's been a rough go since then. Saban changes the whole dynamic down there, and to a lesser extent, so does Petrino. There's no fucking way Dantonio leaves MSU for an SEC pressure cooker like Tennessee, or a red-headed stepchild like Souf Carolina. D's Nuts 11-01-2008, 11:31 PM No shit, D Nuttz. Souf Carolina? MSU is looking like a pretty good place to stay instead of heading down to the SEC where it's murderers row every year. Jethro34 11-02-2008, 06:47 AM Keep in mind that I do NOT think he'll leave this year like the .032 rumor suggests. I do, however, think he's gone within the next 3-4 years. Just a feeling. I've seen plenty other guys that seemed the type that wouldn't leave but did. Glenn 11-02-2008, 03:49 PM So. Carolina is his alma mater, fwiw bukdow 11-03-2008, 02:03 PM What I am hearing is that its RichRod thats looking to go to Tennessee. Glenn 11-03-2008, 02:05 PM lol, there's no way his career could take that right now Sounds like a Sparty wet dream, perhaps a vindictive reaction to hearing rumors about Dantonio leaving. MoTown 11-03-2008, 02:05 PM If that's the case, maybe this time Michigan could go out and get Les Miles. Rich Rod's reign of terror will only last one year. Unfortunately, he will leave the program in shambles. I doubt it happens, though. Glenn 11-03-2008, 02:07 PM Rodriguez signed a 6-year contract just last week. Nice try, Sparty. bukdow 11-03-2008, 02:48 PM Rodriguez signed a 6-year contract just last week. Nice try, Sparty. Considering RichRod`s history of honoring contracts, I see your point. Zip Goshboots 11-03-2008, 02:51 PM Considering RichRod`s history of honoring contracts, I see your point. Do you mean he broke a contract, leaving a team as they were preparing for a bowl game? Man, good thing Mark Dantonio never did th--oh wait. MoTown 11-03-2008, 02:53 PM Considering RichRod`s history of honoring contracts, I see your point. I knew that was coming. But unless RichRod has a severe case of Downs, he knows that switching again, especially right now, would be career suicide. Zip Goshboots 11-03-2008, 02:56 PM Actually I'm hearing Izzo. Glenn 11-03-2008, 02:57 PM Actually I'm hearing Izzo. Damn, I can't believe that I didn't get to that first. Zip Goshboots 11-03-2008, 03:06 PM It was out there, and I was astonished! And, it never gets old. |
