View Full Version : Daunte Culpepper a Lion?
Timone 10-28-2008, 02:02 PM Quarterback Daunte Culpepper visited the Detroit Lions Tuesday morning and has initiated contract negotiations following a workout.
Talks are in the beginning stage and Culpepper has not made any salary demands.
On Tuesday morning, Culpepper, who announced last week he was coming out of retirement, notified the Chiefs he is looking at the Lions more than the Chiefs. The Chiefs contacted Culpepper last week and intrigued him enough to come out of retirement and consider a visit to Kansas City.
That visit to Kansas City didn't happen and each side has gone separate ways.
Culpepper labeled his workout with the Lions a good one.

Who better to come in and throw 3 picks a game? He's a perfect replacement for Kitna.
The only negative is taking PT from Stanton. But if we're rolling with Dan O the rest of the way I say we may as well have Dante throwing picks.
Timone 10-28-2008, 02:10 PM Pray something happens to Calvin.
If Daunte ends up getting game action and there's no one for him to throw bombs to, the team will continue moving on the right track. It'll be like Kitna was never out.
MoTown 10-28-2008, 02:12 PM This makes zero sense from a rebuilding standpoint. Then again, when do the Lions ever make sense?
Glenn 10-28-2008, 02:13 PM This would have been a decent move a few years ago before signing Kitna, but it makes no sense now.
They have to find out if Orlavsky and Stanton can play, and these are valuable games to do just that.
Why would they want to bring a guy in that has no future with the team, just to try and grab a win or two?
Just to avoid the 0-16?
Glenn 10-28-2008, 02:14 PM I knew that he was going to sign somewhere, but I thought it would be Dallas.
He tried out for the Steelers (along with Leftwich) when Batch got injured this preseason, but he wanted a multi-year deal to be a back up.
I heard a report this morning that he wanted $10m guaranteed from KC, lol.
Timone 10-28-2008, 02:18 PM Culpepper > Stanton.
Glenn 10-28-2008, 02:20 PM This is all a distraction to keep us from voting.
I bet McCain is Daunte's agent.
And yes, I know that he reps himself.

Darth Thanatos 10-29-2008, 12:52 AM My checklist for an 0-16 season is almost complete
Get rid of all your good players and replace them with wash-ups. CHECK
Don't use Kevin Smith. CHECK
Injury to the only players that matter(there's only four of em). Pending......
Dumb idea if we pick him up. Good arm and accurate, but speed and quickness has depreciated; and with our line and brutal schedule of defensive teams, that ain't a good thing.
Jethro34 10-29-2008, 04:12 PM Based on what he demanded from KC as a salary, whether or not he signs with Detroit and how much it's for will tell us a lot about whether Mayhew should be the next GM or not.
Zekyl 10-29-2008, 04:50 PM Mayhew should not be the Kittens new GM.
Ficksed
D's Nuts 10-29-2008, 05:46 PM Any news out of Detroit about this yet?
Zekyl 10-29-2008, 06:27 PM All they've said so far is that they brought him in for a typical in-season free agent visit.
Vinny 10-29-2008, 06:43 PM When could he legitimately start? Week 12, by the time he learns a bit of the offense and all that (not that it's really all that complicated)?
I imagine for him to come out of retirement, we'd have to offer some sort of assurance that he'd be given every opportunity to start next year as well.
Jethro34 11-01-2008, 10:49 PM Wow. So it's done.
If you would have told me 3 1/2 years ago that the Lions would have Culpepper and Rudi Johnson and didn't have to give anything up to get either, I would have gotten an erection. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll have one now for weeks. How quickly things can change.
A) Culpepper sucks enough now that the team isn't going to do anything amazing with him.
B) He might not suck quite enough to preserve the winless season. Even the horrible Raiders were 3-4 in games he played in last season.
Zekyl 11-04-2008, 11:07 PM We have a terrible offensive line, how long is his "I'm finally healthy" going to last?
D's Nuts 11-05-2008, 03:41 PM How bad are we going to be with Daunte starting on Sunday?
MoTown 11-05-2008, 03:44 PM How bad are we going to be with Daunte starting on Sunday?
Anyone else feel that should be the slogan for next year?
DrRay11 11-05-2008, 03:47 PM Lions win, 105-87
Tahoe 11-05-2008, 03:48 PM Do they still run those..."Believe in NOW' commercials in Detroit?
MoTown 11-05-2008, 03:52 PM They stopped those the second Millen was fired.
Tahoe 11-05-2008, 03:56 PM ^ funny cuz that's when I started believing we have a future.
WTFchris 11-05-2008, 04:00 PM Last week you wrote that if the Lions signed Daunte Culpepper, you’d have an issue with that. Well, who do you think will see the field first this season, Culpepper or Drew Stanton?
I don’t have an issue with Culpepper. The Lions are 0-8. There’s no hope for this season. If they want to test drive Culpepper to see what he has, I don’t see the harm in it. If the reports about his contract are true, there’s really no risk to bringing him in. And if he’s good, then they have their starter or their veteran backup for next season.
My point was, and is, that I fail to see how the same logic isn’t applied to Stanton. Why not play him? Based on what Jim Colletto says, Stanton might embarrass himself. If that’s the case, why has he been the second-string quarterback (http://www.freep.com/article/20081104/SPORTS01/81104040/1048#) for the past four games? Are the Lions entering games with a backup QB that they feel is totally ill-equipped to play in this league? If Stanton is so bad, why didn’t they sign Culpepper weeks ago? Why didn’t they sign Tim Rattay? Why didn’t they just keep Jon Kitna?
I admire a lot about Rod Marinelli. I really do. His team continues to play awfully hard. He protects his players, for the most part, and he runs a very tight ship. But Marinelli sometimes likes to change his philosophies to fit the situation. When George Foster started over Gosder Cherilus earlier this season, it was because Cherilus hadn’t earned the position in practice. Yet here comes Culpepper who hasn’t been an effective NFL (http://www.freep.com/article/20081104/SPORTS01/81104040/1048#) quarterback in four years, and he’ll just climb up the depth chart.
The answer to your question is Culpepper. He’ll start before Stanton does. I wonder if Stanton will ever see the field for the Lions. A second-round draft pick with undeniable ability to play the position — and he might just waste away on the bench. The season is lost, so I’d like to see him play. And I simply can’t fathom the philosophy that doesn’t allow it. We’ve seen bad quarterbacks (http://www.freep.com/article/20081104/SPORTS01/81104040/1048#) through the years in Detroit. I just have a hard time believing Stanton is worse than all of them. But we’ll never know because, apparently, he’s the worst practice player of all time.
