The University of Michigan football may still be stinging from Saturday's loss at Penn State, the program's first defeat at the hands of the Nittany Lions since 1996.

The team may be careening toward its first absence from a bowl since 1975 and first losing season since 1967.

Despite the dubious historical marks, the Wolverines have not lost their confidence or swagger when it comes to facing Michigan State, their intra-state rival.

"We are not going to lose to State," defensive end Brandon Graham proclaimed Saturday following the team's 46-17 loss at Happy Valley.

"That's just, we're not going to lose to State," he said again, shaking his head. "We're going to work hard. We're going to win."

The Wolverines enter Saturday's game against the Spartans at Michigan Stadium mired in a three-game losing streak and do not yet know whether starting quarterback Steven Threet will play.

Threet re-injured his throwing elbow midway through the third quarter Saturday. He returned in the fourth quarter. His availability will be a key factor in whether the Wolverines back up Graham's prediction, which no other players stated so boldly, although they agreed with his optimistic sentiments.

"Michigan State is a rival game, and I've never lost to Michigan State since I've been here," linebacker John Thompson said. "We're not going in there with a defeatist attitude that Michigan State is a better team."

Michigan State (6-2, 3-1) enters the game much like Michigan - smarting from a lopsided defeat, 45-7 to Ohio State.

The Wolverines have not lost to the Spartans since 2001. Last year, Michigan trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter before Mario Manningham caught a 31-yard touchdown pass with 2:28 left that gave U-M a 28-24 win in East Lansing.

After that comeback, then-Michigan tailback Mike Hart said: "Sometimes you get your little brother excited when you're playing basketball and you let him get the lead. Then you come back and take it from him."

The "little brother" comment stuck. And it's one that Graham's guarantee could rekindle. Either way, Graham made it clear the Wolverines are not dejected and are eager to get back onto the football field.

"We'll keep fighting, keep working," he said. "We're doing some good things out there. We just need to keep going 100 percent."

University of Michigan quarterback Steven Threet - who missed most of the second half of Saturday's loss to Penn State after re-aggravating an elbow injury - said he'll play against Michigan State.

Threet, who spoke to the media Monday, said the elbow, which was first bruised in the loss to Toledo, is improving and shouldn't keep him out of practices the rest of the week.

Michigan (2-5, 1-2 Big Ten) is looking to extend an eight-game home winning streak against Michigan State (6-2, 3-1). The Spartans haven't beaten Michigan in Ann Arbor since 1990.

I read posts. I just don't respond to them all the time.

This is a hard game to read. UM is a mess of inconsistency. There was a time in the season where the 4th quarter was the only time they could do anything with the ball, but recently that changed to the 1st quarter, and they've been consistently horrible on offense in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. I'm convinced they can win this game if they can score more than 21, but that is a ton to ask of this game. If Sheridan plays he'll throw 3 TD's - all of them to Otis Wiley.

Meanwhile, MSU is so terribly overrated. They've played two teams and lost to both of them. A win this week wouldn't prove anything either. The conference is such a joke right now and they're opportunistic enough to take advantage. However, they need this game more than UM does. UM needs it if they can kick off a 4 game win streak to get bowl-eligible, but most of the players probably don't see that happening. However, MSU needs it in effort to prove they've moved on from their past.

For MSU this game is something to believe in. If Purdue and Wisconsin weren't such suspect winless conference teams, this game could carry a fear of MSU losing out.
For UM, this is a rivalry game and of course the players want to win - they do every week. But based on the perspective of the season and the series, this is a recruiting weekend more than anything.

I think this game comes down to 2 things. Michigan not turning the ball over and our D-Line vs MSU's Offensive Line. I think they will try and run and MSU may have a little success, but I think that our D-Line will win that battle. If Michigan can force MSU to make Hoyer beat us, I think Michigan is in a good position.

We cannot continue to play 10-12 yards off of their receivers and keep playing zone coverage. Scott Schaeffer needs to be aggressive in this game and let our athletes play instead of using Lloyd's system of bend, don't break. Put some pressure at the line and mix up your coverages. Hoyer is a terrible quarterback, and if our D-line can get pressure and if Hoyer doesn't throw it towards Morgan trent we will be ok.

I think michigan could be a mediocre team if not for the extreme incompetence at qb and safety. threet is just terrible, but sheridan is worse. The safeties couldn't cover a floor with a rug and they can't tackle for shit either. harrison could have snapped his neck on one of the tackles he actually made. I think we can all say this is the worst michigan team in 25 years (as long as I've been following). I can't tell if it is bad defensive play calling or poor safety play, but the number of big plays given up is crushing.
