League to lay off about 80 amid economic slowdown, Stern says

LONDON -- The NBA is laying off 9 percent of its work force over worries about the U.S. economy, commissioner David Stern said.

"We made a decision some months ago that the economy was going to be a bit wobbly, so we began a belt-tightening that will result in a work-force reduction of about 9 percent domestically," Stern said Sunday, speaking before an NBA preseason game at London's O2 arena.

This translates into about 80 jobs, he later told Reuters.

"There is a season-ticket renewal rate decline, and new sales are also being hit," he said. "My guess is when [the regular season] kicks off, we will be down modestly in season ticket sales."

Aubrey McClendon, one of the billionaires behind the Oklahoma City Thunder, is no longer a billionaire. He was buying on margin, got burned, and had to sell off 95% of his company's shares in a day. Poof!

Facing 10-game suspension, Celtics F Miles waived

BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics have waived forward Darius Miles, who missed the past two seasons with knee injuries and who was suspended without pay for 10 games this season for violating the NBA's anti-drug program.

The Celtics said Monday that its training camp roster now has 15 players.

Boston signed Miles as a free agent Aug. 22. He averaged 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in six preseason games.

Miles' suspension will begin with the first game of the regular season for which he is eligible and physically able to play.

The 27-year-old was selected third overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2000 draft. He has averaged 10.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in his career.

I was hoping he made the squad so Portland would be on the hook for $18 mill.

Now they're going to be able to re-sign Roy, Aldridge & Co.

Portland probably will send Boston an extra 1st rounder later this year in a small trade (wink wink).

Word on the street is that LB already sick of his team.

Allan Houston's latest attempt to come back as a player with the New York Knicks ended Thursday and he began discussions with the team about a role within the organization. The Knicks also waived swingman Dan Grunfeld, trimming their roster to 16 players. Houston was forced to retire in October 2005 because of chronic knee pain, and has attempted a comeback in each of the last two preseasons.

Yeah, I'm hoping it's not serious. I'd like to at least see what he can do on an NBA court before his career is over.

Oden said he landed on Derek Fisher's foot while going after a rebound. If only it were that simple. Players land on other players' feet all the time and usually it's nothing worse than a sprained ankle.

The problem is, Fisher didn't recall it that way.
