Glenn 09-29-2008, 10:20 AM Pistons Sign Free Agent Guard Alex Acker
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars announced today that the team has signed free agent guard Alex Acker to a contract. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Playing overseas the last two seasons, Acker averaged 6.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 30 games for FC Barcelona last season and 14.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists with Olympiacos in 2006-07 Euroleague play.
The 6-foot-5, 185-pound guard played five games with the Pistons during the 2005-06 season, averaging 1.8 points and 1.0 rebounds per game. He was drafted by Detroit with the 60th overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft.
Acker ended his college career as the 20th all-time leading scorer in Pepperdine University history with 1,273 points. Named an All-West Coast Conference performer as a junior, he averaged 14.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 88 career games for the Waves and ranked seventh in career steals with 133.
Glenn 09-29-2008, 10:20 AM Is he NBDL eligible?
MoTown 09-29-2008, 10:30 AM First off, those stats aren't impressive.
Second off, 6-5, 185??? Tayshaun laughs at his frail body.
One step closer to Glenn's ideal of an all SG backcourt.
Glenn 09-29-2008, 11:21 AM Oh yeah, Acker is Rip insurance.
AIG
Glenn 09-29-2008, 11:22 AM Not many people can say that they are the 20th all-time leading scorer in Pepperdine University history.
Wait...
Seriously though, he's staying over seas right? I'm assuming this is essentially an extension on holding the kid's rights, yes?

You can't sign him and leave him overseas.
They didn't have to do anything to keep his rights, AFAICT.
Glenn 09-29-2008, 11:31 AM My guess is that it's a non-guaranteed contract and he'll either get cut in training camp or they'll keep him as long as they can before having to guarantee his salary (sometime in early 2009, if memory serves).
So he's actually going to be on the team? (my mind is so not in CBA mode right now).
WTF?

Alex Fuckin' Acker Indicates Championship Though?

You're really close, keep working on it.
Also, here's more detail on Acker's deal.

Pistons sign former pick Acker
Chris McCosky / The Detroit News
AUBURN HILLS -- The Pistons will give Alex Acker every chance to earn the 15th and last roster spot.
They signed Acker, whom they took with the 60th pick in the 2005 draft, to a partially guaranteed one-year deal Monday morning. It could be worth up to $687,000.
The Pistons also will hold an option for the 2009-2010 season.
Acker, who at 6-foot-5 can play both guard positions, played in Europe the past two seasons. He averaged 14.6 points and 5.6 rebounds for Olympiacos in 2006-2007 and, despite nagging knee problems, averaged 6.7 points last season with FC Barcelona.
He played in five games with the Pistons in 2005-2006.
Zekyl 09-29-2008, 02:55 PM We had an extra spot anyway. I'm going to assume this means the end of Hunter.

If that's true, he's officially my favorite Piston.
Uncle Mxy 09-29-2008, 03:08 PM Given Lindsey's legal issues, I was expecting something like this, though I'd been hoping for someone with more of his defensive abilities. Do we think Acker (or Afflalo or Stuckey) can keep pace with a fast PG for stretches?

I think that is Bynum's role.
Zekyl 09-29-2008, 05:13 PM I was going to say Afflalo was the heir to Hunters pitbull spot
Uncle Mxy 09-29-2008, 06:44 PM I think that is Bynum's role.
I thought his role was to be a real pass-first PG (something Lindsey couldn't do). I have no idea of how his D is.

See I thought Bynum was our 20/20 point guard. Which means he plays only when we're up or down 20.
We all need to get our heads back into the Association.
I just have one question:

Glenn 09-30-2008, 08:49 AM Bynum's a speedy, pesky defender and a poor man's pass-first PG.
Zekyl 10-01-2008, 12:56 AM Well, that's about all you can expect out of your #3 point guard.
I love that the title includes "finally".
We've been waiting for it for so long.

While I see what you did there, it was more of a reference to him being drafted in 2005 than a reference to you, or anyone else's, level of anticipation for his signing.
In other words, don't ever question Joe D.
Just smile and order the official WTF "I'm an Acker Backer" t-shirt.

I'm not criticizing you Glenn. Sheesh.
Glenn 10-01-2008, 02:22 PM Bullshit.
I thrive on criticism.
It's made me what I am today.
I think Alex Acker is similar in that regard.
Glenn 10-01-2008, 02:49 PM Yes, yes I do.
Also, I think anyone reading this thread is probably confused as hell.

We are solid out to the 11th man, have 2 huge upside projects, and two scrubs. Some teams start scrubs.
Yay.
