View Full Version : UM vs. Miami(OH)
bukdow 09-05-2008, 11:09 AM This is a game that UM will win. I believe the blue and yellow have seen the last of Sheridan as Threet did a much better job at QB. The defense will win this for UM and will continue to get better as the season goes on. As they will need to considering the offensive offense. UM 24 M(OH) 13.
Wilfredo Ledezma 09-05-2008, 01:51 PM I see the Red Hawks pulling off the upset in this one.

You better run, they are coming for you:

Jethro34 09-05-2008, 03:08 PM While I agree with bukdow (I just threw up in my mouth) that the score of this game will be lower, I do not necessarily think we have seen the last of Sheridan.
Yes, Threet did infinitely better and I would love to see him develop and earn all the PT, since he seems to have better physical tools, but clearly the staff saw something in Sheridan prior to the season. I get the impression they aren't going to throw that all away because of one pathetic half, as much as I would like them to.
Either way, this game is bigger because it's the only game we have left to build up to Notre Dame. I have no idea how good or bad ND will be this year, I just know that I want desperately to beat them.
Wilfredo Ledezma 09-05-2008, 07:46 PM Hopefully we see more of Minor & Brown (if he plays) instead of Shaw & McGuffie. I think Sam & Michael will both be solid players, but they aren't going to win any games for us this year...let the experienced guys carry the bulk of the load...
Also, with Threet's cannon arm, more deep passes would be nice. Kind of like how RR ran the offense when he had Shaun King at Tulane. Threet = Shaun King. We have plenty of WR's to make something like that work.
Ever think a UM fan would say "Threet = Shaun King", a Tulane QB, and be happy about it? I sure didn't.
Wilfredo Ledezma 09-05-2008, 10:41 PM ^^^with such low expectations this season, I can only hope Threet can equal Shaun King (who was actually pretty damn productive in college, FYI)
Tahoe 09-06-2008, 12:10 PM I guess we'll use Bukky's thread for the OGT???
IMPRESSIVE OPENING DRIVE FOR A TD. Granted it was a short field, but who cares.
Wilfredo Ledezma 09-06-2008, 02:12 PM Offense has hit a wall since Lopata's FG, but the defense is doing fine...
I think UM pulls this one out, albeit in ugly fashion, but I could care less.

Jethro34 09-06-2008, 03:30 PM Ok, here's what would be excellent.
#1 - I would be THRILLED if this team would actually show up for the 2nd and 3rd quarter in games this year.
#2 - Someone needs to win this QB job outright and stay in. Taking Threet out when they did was a mistake.
#3 - I see NO reason why Donovan Warren should continue to return punts.
#4 - It would be fantastic if Threet would stop overthrowing open WRs.
#5 - I disagree with anyone who wants to see less of McGuffie and Shaw.

#1- I agree, two games in a row, and we're a no-show in the 2nd & 3rd
#2- I like Threet over Sheridan. I'm not a big fan of the direct throw to the sideline receiver though. It seems like those were the only passes we threw. Even Lloyd would run that play to Breaston several times a game, and it never lead to much. I don't see how running that play to Clemons or Stonum get's us anywhere. Threet can throw downfield, I don't understand why RR doesn't at least try.
#3- I agree. It's not going to happen, but I would love to see McGuffie have a chance to take that job. Or even on KR's, give him any types of open field, and God only knows...
#4- I agree here too. He missed Hemingway a couple times, and Odoms I think a couple times. I think he's putting too much zip on his throws.
#5- Shaw and McGuffie are about the same running out of the shotgun. Either 12+ yard gain, or three yard loss. I'd like to see Minor get more carries, he's more of a punishing runner, whereas Sam or Michael go down like feathers when guys make good contact.
Also, I'd like to see them get Carson Butler involved, I don't even think he's been targeted in either game. He's not a stiff at TE, for all these long third down plays, getting the TE involved would seem ideal to me...
Defense was stout, pass coverage was solid I thought. Warren, Harrison, Stevie Brown all played solid. LB's we're solid, and D-Line caused some havoc in the 1st & 4th quarters...
and Lopata...WTF?, shanked a 41 yarder, and botched a PAT?? Visions of Jason Gingell, Hayden Epstein, and Phil Brabbs all over again...
shags 09-06-2008, 05:10 PM Michigan might have the worst QB situation in college FB (at least amongst BCS schools). What's the old saying? When you have two QBs, you really have none. There may not be a game this year where Michigan has the better QB. Did Threet or Sheridan even complete a pass beyond the line of scrimmage today? Threet missed open receivers several times.
However, there is no such thing as a bad win this season. The defense played well today. They really need to force turnovers, but that's a lot to ask for.
Next week is a big game. It seems unlikely that Michigan will beat Wisconsin or Illinois.
Jethro34 09-06-2008, 06:20 PM The PAT was a terrible snap and/or hold. You could see him almost have to stop, then try to pop it up there after they finally got the ball down.
Butler was targeted for at least one today, in the end zone even I believe, but once again it was terribly overthrown.
As for the sideline pass, it only works if you can sell a fake and have guys that will block. Slightly more effective is when you have the guy slanting and hit him in stride with a step - a la the 50 yard play Odoms made on the first drive that had people thinking the offense was going to turn the corner (then they couldn't get in the end zone again until the 4th quarter).

I don't know if I'd go that far. QB play really hasn't cost them a game so far. The Utah loss was more of a product of the defensive lapse in the first half rather than poor play. However, once they play decent teams like Wisconsin, Penn St, and Illinois, that's when Threet needs to show more poise.
He's only going to get better as weeks go by...

I'll never correct grammar. Mine sucks.
I was changing your last statement to a lil sarcasm, (my humor) cuz deep down YOU really care.
xanadu 09-07-2008, 12:22 AM Ever think a UM fan would say "Threet = Shaun King", a Tulane QB, and be happy about it? I sure didn't.
Didn't King have one of the best statistical seasons in ncaa history and start some games in the nfl. If either of these guys turn into shaun king i would be ecstatic. as it is, i doubt either would be even an average big 10 qb. i just hope they keep the bowl streak going this year and nail down the offense next year. i'm guessing that one of next year's qb recruits will take over at some point. i think sheridan is much crisper in operating the offense, whereas threet seems to telegraph all the short throws. however, sheridan can't run and has no arm. thus, sheridan can better disguise the short throws, but threet can (in theory) actually complete a 10+ yard pass downfield. if mi wants to increase its chances of beating osu from 0.001% to 1%, they should try to develop threet exclusively. otherwise i think they're about equal for winning early games.
from the small portions of the nd game that i saw, they still suck, especially claussen. however, maybe it was just first game issues. i forsee nd and mi as .500 teams this year. i think its a tossup. if the defense gets a pass rush going, i could see claussen fold just like last year.
Wilfredo Ledezma 09-07-2008, 12:29 AM I think ND will be much worse than Michigan. SD State is downright brutal, they literally cannot run the ball, at all. Miami (OH) would've destroyed SD State (who lost to 1-AA Cal Poly just last week. Michigan should take care of ND easier than they took care of Miami, Ohio. But with Threet under center, anything can go wrong.
Jethro34 09-07-2008, 06:35 AM Thank goodness BOTH Beaver and Forcier are expected to enroll in January, giving them much more time than most true freshman have to learn the playbook and experience the conditioning.

Yeah I agree, anything that can give them a head start is going to be a huge plus. Are there any other incoming frosh expected to enroll early??
