John McCain's not a dangerous, senile old man—he's a former POW

John McCain and his first wife, just before she was dealt POW card

Hey, did you know John McCain was a POW? You probably didn't, because he's so famously private about it. As he said (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/07/mccain-in-colom.html) in July, "I am always reluctant to talk about these things."

Yes, shy, reluctant John. But, shockingly, he seems to be coming out of his shell lately. After answering every question at the Rick Warren forum with a story about being a POW, the next day his spokeswoman issued a statement (http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0808/Dept_of_preemptive_outrage.html?showall) about whether McCain had heard the questions beforehand: "The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous." Yeah, doesn't everybody know by now? Being a prisoner of war means the only thing you cheat on is your first wife.

We suspect this won't be the last time McCain plays the POW card. As we're finding out, the POW card is amazingly versatile—it can be used in almost any situation. If you, or someone you love, is similarly "reluctant" to talk about their POW experience (and they haven't cheated on you and left you yet), you'll want to check out our 23/6 Guide to Playing the POW Card.

I mentioned his overuse of the POW card lately in the general election thread. It seems to have gotten out of hand. I think we all admire him for what he went through. However, that doesn't give you a free pass to ignore issues.

I heard he was on with Katie Couric Sunday and she asked him about the home question. He went on about B52s and never gave her a number at all.

^ But he answered the question, imo.

I don't want to vote for some loser that lives in the apartments down by the river.

The Dems are trying to make this a lil bit of class warfare, imo. But with Kennedy and Kerry's wealth, I'm not sure thats a winner.

And he definately married money. He didn't make it.

Tit for tat on the "Obama is a celebrity" angle.

McCain's negative ads made this topic fair game, IMO.

Again, I was wrong that he didn't use it. He obviously does. I didn't know that, but I think its a reply to gotcha politics. Its really a pretty good response as you can tell by the applause.

#9 I agree, its now fair game. But I bet its a loser for the Dems.

They aren't just making an issue of him having 7 homes. They are making an issue of the fact that he can't even remember how many he has, which makes him out of touch with the bad economy.

In this case the issue is that you went on a late night TV show and you drivel on with the same sad story yet again. That was his chance to make a good joke about it and show he is maybe in touch with Americans. He chose to give his POW speech again, at a bad time IMO.

Agree to disagree there. I think they are trying to make this class warfare too.

I think there are definitely two aspects.

1. The dude is so loaded that he can't possibly relate to Joe Sixpack.

2. If you don't have the faculties to remember how many residences that you own, how can you be relied on for major decision making?

I honestly believe that JM could give a shit how many houses he married into.

And 2, I don't think he considers some of his wifes investments as residences. So he prolly really didn't know and doesn't care. He's more concerned about Joe Sixpack than how many houses he has.

They why not say so?

He could have said "we have 3 houses we live/vacation in regularly. Cindy also has some investment homes she owns but she'd know more about those than me."

(I just picked 3 as an example)

He would have been a lot better off than saying that then saying "I don't know". Maybe you can give him a free pass in the initial question. But how do you give him a pass for not looking it up and having an answer the next time it is asked? How do you give him a pass for playing the POW card two more times when being asked about it?

And as far as I know, these houses don't just have HER name on them. They aren't "Cindy's houses", although I can see how they may want to play it off that way.

Because the question obviously caught him off guard. And he's being grilled for it. BO is playing gotcha politics with it and it is kind of working, I guess.

I mean what are you trying to get at? He's connected to the mob? He got the houses illegally?

Play with the 'moment' as you must, but this isn't anything that will turn the election, imo.

Did you even read my last post? I said maybe I can give him a pass the first time (from surprise). But if you can't roll with the punches when asked after that...what are you going to do when people ask you hard questions as a president? Just play your POW card?

I'm not saying he's doing anything illegal (I don't know why you went there). I'm just saying he was flustered even after the first time it was asked.
