I haven't seen this discussed anywhere, but he has to be in the hunt. He's 11-4 with a 3.11 ERA. The only other pitcher you could consider is Jair at 11-7 with a 3.18 ERA. Or Blackburn at 9-6 with a 3.73 ERA.

For hitters you have Soto at .286, 18 HR's and 69 RBIs. Or Longoria at .278, 22 HRs and 71 RBI (but hurt and out a while now). There are some other solid rookie hitters but those two would probably be his best competition.

Do you think he can take ROY? He's probably got 8 starts left this year. Assuming he can win 4-5 of those and keep his ERA near 3 I would think he'd be hard to beat.

He's got a great shot.....Jair is in the NL, yes?

Yeah, I forgot they split by league. Soto is also in the NL BTW.

I was thinking about this today too, wondering if Longoria's injury would give him a shot. Alexei Ramirez for the Sox has been pretty unbelievable after a slow start, he may get it too.

Wow, I'm outta touch. I thought Galarraga pitched for another team in the bigs.

He's been a great surprise.

Keep dreaming, Longoria has ROY on lockdown, and with all the politics that go into an award like that, Alexei Ramirez, Jacoby Ellsbury, David Murphy, and probably Joba will all finish ahead of Armando.

Not saying I agree, but you haven't heard anything about ROY, because the Tigers have been shit this year.

^^ Adam Jones from Baltimore will get some votes too, but probably less than Armando...

What if the Rays fade out of the playoffs?

I don't think it will matter. If it get's that bad for the Rays down the stretch, and I don't think it will, than Alexei Ramirez or Jacoby Ellsbury will get more love.

I haven't seen anybody, on any national websites, acknowledge the job Armando has done, he's practially irrelavant to the national media since this season has been such a disappointment. It's unfair to Armando, if he was on the Yankees right now, he'd be getting tons of attention, but unfortunately Detroit is a market that the ROY voters are not bias towards.

I'm still surprised Verlander won it in '06, I bet the voters we're just DYING to give it to Papelbon, and if not him, than Liriano. Fortunately for Justin, both of them suffered injuries and missed the last month or so of the season.

I suppose anything's possible, but I wouldn't expect Armando to finish in the top 3. I'd gladly eat crow if I'm wrong.

That would actually make a better case for Longoria, IMO.

Good point. I bet one of the local tools like Jon Paul Morosi will give Matt Joyce a 3rd place vote though.

Mike Aviles from KC could get some votes too. If he had been called up a few weeks eariler, he'd be leading the batting title right now.

Yeah, he's a lock for NL ROY, IMO.

Fukudome has kind of tailed off into obscurity for a couple months, and I don't think Joey Votto has been as impressive as Geo.

Jurrjens will probably finish 2nd in the NL ROY voting.

1- Soto
2- Jurrjens
3- Votto
4- Fukudome
5- Parra?, Cueto?, Kuroda?, Lannan?

even Kyle McClellan and Cory Wade could get some votes, because they've been outstanding relievers...

but Soto will be unanimous...

Leyland: Armando Galarraga has earned starting spot for '09
BY JON PAUL MOROSI • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • August 16, 2008

Armando Galarraga leads the Tigers -- and all rookies in the American League -- with 11 victories.

Galarraga has a 3.11 ERA, which is a half-run better than Justin Verlander's mark when he was named AL rookie of the year in 2006.

Galarraga arrived in Lakeland, Fla., six months ago with a royal blue glove and little apparent chance of contributing in the majors this season. The Texas Rangers, for whom pitching is a perpetual need, traded him in February.

But he has been indispensable since coming up from Triple-A Toledo in April, and manager Jim Leyland said Friday that Galarraga is expected to be part of the rotation again in 2009.

"As we speak, he's earned a spot in the rotation," Leyland said. "He's more than earned his keep, that's for sure."

Entering Friday, only one National League rookie had equaled Galarraga's win total: Jair Jurrjens, the promising right-hander the Tigers traded to the Braves in October.

As much as Tigers followers lament the loss of Jurrjens -- who debuted with the Tigers a year ago Friday -- fans in Texas probably feel the same way about Galarraga.

Aside from his performance, Galarraga is particularly valuable because he is young (26) and inexpensive. He is not on track to be eligible for free agency until after the 2013 season.

It's not known how much money the Tigers will devote to upgrading their rotation this winter. They already owe $29.5 million to Jeremy Bonderman, Nate Robertson and Dontrelle Willis for next season, and Justin Verlander is due to receive a big raise in salary arbitration.

The biggest improvement may need to come from existing personnel. And that group almost certainly will include Galarraga.

"Galarraga probably improved more than any pitcher we have because he learned how to hold runners, he learned how to be deceptive, he learned how to change his cadence to home," Leyland said. "He's made a lot of adjustments."

I'm not sure that he's earned it or that it's a good idea. We've got so many other good options for the rotation that I think I'd start him at Toledo.

Fukudome had a pretty nice April but hasn't done too much since. He's barely holding onto his starting job. He shouldn't get many votes.

Andy (Tampa): Is Evan Longoria still the favorite for ROY even with the time missed for injury?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Rob Neyer: Yes. But if Longoria does *not* do well in September and if Armando Galarraga builds on his fine season, there might actually be a contest. Should be, anyway.

^^I find that hard to believe, even if Armando keeps up his pace, he's still getting no national media attention. If Evan goes down the tank, I think the doors open up for Alexei Ramirez...then Armando.

Not saying it's fair, I think Armando has been absolutely outstanding this year, but I think it's all getting back to the "bigger market, winning team" thing...
