I've actually had this conversation before, but Jim Caple's botched article ( http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=caple/080813 ) got me thining:

What are the most important Trophies/Awards to the entire world?

Caple didn't really base his shitty article that way - he did it based more on "What award is most important to the fat, lazy guy who watches football all day on his couch" instead of most prestige. How would you rank the awards, based on what the world perceives?

Here's a list of some of the top awards, and I took out some of the crap that he came up with. (Did I mention his article fucking sucked?)

Major Team Championships:
World Series
Superbowl
Stanley Cup
NBA Championship
World Cup
BCS Championship
NCAA Basketball Championship
Gold Medal
(I probably missed some)

Individual Championships:
Masters/PGA/US Open/British Open
US Open/Wimbledon/Austrailian Open/French Open
Gold Medal
Heavyweight Title
Team Sport MVP Awards

I probably missed a lot, but you get the idea.
(Maybe we could get some conversation going on today)

By the way, this would be my top 10 of importance to the world:

10. PGA
9. Wimbledon
8. Masters
7. World Series
6. Heavyweight Title
5. NBA Championship - China is making this more popular by the day
4. Superbowl - Most important in America, thus high on the list.
3. Gold Medal
2. Stanley Cup - While hockey isn't as big as the other 3 major sports in the US, the Stanley Cup is something kids dream about. It's the most recognizable trophy in all of sports.
1. World Cup - I don't like it, but they stopped a civil war to participate in the world cup. The world is crazy for this thing.

I think #10 needs to move up a bit in your list, Tahoe.

I don't know enough about what other people in the world think of these things, but I'd agree on the World Cup being #1 for sure. Super Bowl would be up there, probably #1 in America, but it doesn't get a whole lot of hype around the world that I know of. The Stanley Cup is #4 of the 4 major sports in America, but if you look at Canada and head over to Europe, especially Eastern Europe, hockey is HUGE. These kids grow up dreaming of the NHL the way Americans grow up dreaming of MLB and NBA.

Agree, which is why I had it over the NBA and almost a tie, imo, with the World Series. But it would be a different list if Mo asked just in the US.
