View Full Version : Remembering "The Alternatorz"

FWIW, that 2nd group (Stuckey, Afflalo, Amir, Max, Kwame) could be our starting 5 in any game against the Grizzlies and we would win.

That brings back memories. I remember having that discussion about Corliss/Barry/Zelly? and the Alternatorz.

I would LOVE to see a coach do that, just one game. Put all the regular starters on the bench and start the 2nd string against one of the shittier teams in the league.

Alternators-
PG - Hunter
SG - Barry
SF - Corliss
PF -
C -

Shit, someone fill in the blanks for me. We didn't still have Mikki Moore, I don't think. I'm pretty sure the Junkyard Dog was gone at that point as well, wasn't he?

Okur? Rebraca? Was that before or after Chucky Atkins?

Zekyl

Actually, Chucky was in there. Rebraca was a part of it. Okur was either not here yet or a rook, I believe, because it was definitely before he became our starter at PF.

Don't forget Mike James, Darvin Ham, Elden Campbell, and Bobby Sura.

Those were all bench contributors during that pre-Championship team, but I can't remember exactly who the bench 5 were that were mentioned in that context.

Does Pepi Sanchez count?

Mike James and Darvin Ham didn't come around until the championship year, I thought. They weren't part of the Alternatorz. The Alternatorz died when Barry left.

Someone should split this off into a different thread.

WE NEED KSTAT

Also, my memories of the Alternatorz were Barry, Corliss, Zelly and that's about it.

Maybe Brian Cardinal or Damon Jones?

IMO the Alternators died when Barry left 02-03 and none of those 4 were on the 02-03 team. They all came in 04. Mike James was a Pitbull not an Alternator.

Damn these split threads. I agree with Z because Z agrees with me.

From Barry's Wiki, I didn't write this, but I wish that I had.

Jon's most memorable time as a player came in his two seasons playing for the Detroit Pistons. In 2001-02, Barry enjoyed a good season off the bench, co-leading "The Alternatorz" with 6th Man of the Year winner, Corliss Williamson. Barry, Williamson, Zeljko Rebraca, and Damon Jones made up the foursome off the bench that Rick Carlisle went to almost exclusively at the beginnings of the 2nd and 4th quarters.

p.s. I'm going back and editing "z"'s onto the end of all of my Alt. references.

I thought it had a z, but wasn't sure.

Please take note for your posts.

Atkins wasn't an Alternator, he was a starter. Cardinal wasn't because he didn't play.

They used to have the old rosters and stats on their website but I can't seem to find them anymore.

We need a Kstat signal similar to the old giffman signal:

What would Kstat's look like though?

That Barry quote about the lineup is talking about 01-02 exclusively then because Jones left that season and so wasn't on the team for Barry's second year. 02-03 Chucky had been replaced in the starting lineup by Chauncey and so was part of the 2nd squad.

It might be better to limit it to just 01-02 though because from what I remember the Alternatorz that year were like having two starting lineups (because our real starting lineup wasn't that great offensively). By 02-03 we had Rip, Billups, and then in the playoffs Tay in the starting lineup (Ben had already been in the starting lineup for a couple years) so we had a clearly better starting core than our bench.

I tried to make them as even as I could. Those are the Alternatorz 2001-2002 stats.

Dammit, all that work and the spaces don't even show so it doesn't line up

I was about to kick you guys while reading the first couple of posts in this thread. The Alternatorz really was only one year: 2001-2002, the year the Pistons went back to red, white and blue.

It consisted of Damon Jones, John Barry, Corliss and Zelly. (I had the shirt somewhere). And it was a combined effort as to who came up with the name - Damon Jones and JB own the naming rights.

The next year we traded for Rip and signed Chauncey. The Alternatorz name didn't really stick around that year. However, at the beginning of the season, Carlisle didn't trust Rip and Chauncey to finish games off yet, so Chucky and Barry did a lot of the 4th quarters for the first 10-15 games.

They won't miss the opportunity to try to sell some of those (even as a joke).

Maybe even the red version of the teal jerseys every once in a while.

Couldn't find any images of the Red horse jerseys.

Also, just for kicks:

Is there a reason these aren't showing up how they're supposed to?

JB never wore a teal jersey, iirc. He was traded to the Pistons the summer before we wore the Red, White and Blue. That's why we never saw Mateen in the RW&B.

As much as I seriously despised the teal jerseys, I do prefer them to the horrible lightning bolts.
