These local guys/gals have been beaten to story after story for years now. The national media always gets the Pistons stories before the locals, and that's pathetic.

If I had to guess though, it would have a lot more to do with attitude and maybe even the incident with the Orlando radio guy than with his writing.

Might be a money move too, maybe they plan to go without a dedicated beat reporter to save $ (that assumes that they've asked him to take a pay cut). Most newspapers (media in general, especially in Michigan) are really hurting right now.

According to Bill "IwoCPO" Houlihan from Abel to Yzerman, the Detroit News is re-shuffling its sports department, with John Niyo transferring to the Detroit Lions beat, and fellow Wings correspondent Ted Kulfan splitting his workload between the Detroit Pistons and Red Wings. Bill says that MSU correspondent Dave Dye is about to become the News's full-time Wings correspondent.

Detroit Media Partnership: No layoffs, despite not hitting buyout goal

No one will be laid off because the Detroit Media Partnership didn’t reach its July 18 goal of 150 voluntary buyouts, partnership CEO David Hunke said Friday.

There were 116 volunteers, he said, including 18 from the Detroit Free Press newsroom, he said. Cost savings expected from the untaken buyouts will be made up elsewhere.

Eleven newsroom staff from The News took the buyout, said its Editor and Publisher, Jonathan Wolman.

Among the notable names leaving are Free Press columnist Susan Ager and Detroit Lions beat writer Mike O’Hara, a veteran of The Detroit News since 1966.

O’Hara, who has covered the team since 1977, said he’s retiring.

“I’m not an unhappy camper; it’s just time,” he said.

The 150 positions would represent about 7 percent of the combined workforce of the newspaper and the DMP. The partnership runs the business operations of both newspapers, and is 95 percent owned by Virginia-based Gannett Co. Inc.

Another round of buyouts in October saw 110 employees leave.

The buyouts stem from troubles within the newspaper industry — declining circulation and dwindling advertising revenue.

Gannett (NYSE: GCI) said its May print advertising revenue dropped 14.3 percent compared with May 2007, and the company has lost about half its share value over the past year, reflective of an industrywide trend. The company plans to write down its assets by up to $3 billion this quarter, citing declining value of its U.S. and British operations.

Detroit News owner MediaNews Group, a Colorado publisher, saw its credit rating slashed recently by Standard & Poor’s, as it struggles to meet its loan agreements.
