View Full Version : McCosky demoted? Fool 07-29-2008, 07:33 AM BTW, the DSR says McCosky has been demoted and won't be the Pistons' beat writer anymore. MoTown 07-29-2008, 08:01 AM Seriously? Fool 07-29-2008, 08:20 AM He's not sure yet but thinks its true. Glenn 07-29-2008, 08:33 AM I've read rumblings and tried to find something concrete yesterday without luck. I wonder who they would replace him with? I'd love to hear the formal rationale for his demotion. So many things to choose from and probably 20 more reasons that we're unaware of. Fool 07-29-2008, 08:35 AM It would be hilarious if they state the fired him for missing the Kwame Brown signing. Glenn 07-29-2008, 08:37 AM I've been keeping an eye on Krista too, btw. (she's doing laundry right now, btw) I don't think she's written anything in weeks. Langlois shreds. Zekyl 07-29-2008, 08:40 AM It would be hilarious if they state the fired him for missing the Kwame Brown signing. Or if he turned in an article, after reading about the signing somewhere else, saying how he's been waiting for this to happen because he knew Kwami was eventually going to come to the Pistons. Glenn 07-29-2008, 08:44 AM These local guys/gals have been beaten to story after story for years now. The national media always gets the Pistons stories before the locals, and that's pathetic. If I had to guess though, it would have a lot more to do with attitude and maybe even the incident with the Orlando radio guy than with his writing. Might be a money move too, maybe they plan to go without a dedicated beat reporter to save $ (that assumes that they've asked him to take a pay cut). Most newspapers (media in general, especially in Michigan) are really hurting right now. That could also be the case with Krista. Glenn 07-29-2008, 08:49 AM The News' website still lists him as "covering the Pistons": http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=OPINION0326 An awful thought just occurred to me though re: his replacement. Rob Parker. Parker co-hosted the afternoon drive time show on ESPN Radio yesterday, coincidentally. Glenn 07-29-2008, 08:56 AM The byline on the News' Kwame story reads: "By Detroit News staff" I smell smoke. It's either true or he's on vacation or something and someone else is putting the pieces together and making an assumption. WTFchris 07-29-2008, 10:03 AM I've been keeping an eye on Krista too, btw. I've been reading some things on the internet about the Pistons and I read something today that really bothered me. Some people are claiming that you will not be reporting about the Pistons anymore, is that true? I hope that it's not, but if it is, I hope that maybe you will be assigned to write about the Tigers or the Shock (my other two favorite teams). Sincerely, Glenn Zekyl 07-29-2008, 11:25 AM HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA POTY? Glenn 07-29-2008, 02:59 PM Does McCosky still write for Hoopsworld? Atticus771 07-29-2008, 03:17 PM FWIW, Chris used to live across the street from my girlfriend's parents, and they both seemed to think he was a jerk. He probably deserved to be fired. Zekyl 07-29-2008, 03:31 PM Whoa whoa whoa, why did we not know about that sooner, Atticus? Atticus771 07-29-2008, 03:55 PM I'm not sure, Zek. I thought I had mentioned it before, but maybe not. Next time I see her dad I'll see if I can get anymore tidbits. IIRC, he just said things we already know -- Chris was really arrogant, always talking about how he deserved better and wanted to move up in the world. Glenn 07-30-2008, 11:26 AM Detroit Media Partnership: No layoffs, despite not hitting buyout goal By Bill Shea LAST MODIFIED: 6:39 p.m., Jul. 25, 2008 No one will be laid off because the Detroit Media Partnership didn’t reach its July 18 goal of 150 voluntary buyouts, partnership CEO David Hunke said Friday. There were 116 volunteers, he said, including 18 from the Detroit Free Press newsroom, he said. Cost savings expected from the untaken buyouts will be made up elsewhere. Eleven newsroom staff from The News took the buyout, said its Editor and Publisher, Jonathan Wolman. Among the notable names leaving are Free Press columnist Susan Ager and Detroit Lions beat writer Mike O’Hara, a veteran of The Detroit News since 1966. O’Hara, who has covered the team since 1977, said he’s retiring. “I’m not an unhappy camper; it’s just time,” he said. The 150 positions would represent about 7 percent of the combined workforce of the newspaper and the DMP. The partnership runs the business operations of both newspapers, and is 95 percent owned by Virginia-based Gannett Co. Inc. Another round of buyouts in October saw 110 employees leave. The buyouts stem from troubles within the newspaper industry — declining circulation and dwindling advertising revenue. Gannett (NYSE: GCI) said its May print advertising revenue dropped 14.3 percent compared with May 2007, and the company has lost about half its share value over the past year, reflective of an industrywide trend. The company plans to write down its assets by up to $3 billion this quarter, citing declining value of its U.S. and British operations. Detroit News owner MediaNews Group, a Colorado publisher, saw its credit rating slashed recently by Standard & Poor’s, as it struggles to meet its loan agreements. Atticus771 08-07-2008, 02:27 PM A few more McCosky tidbits for y'all: My girlfriend's dad said he used to play pickup ball with Chris back when he still worked for the Muskegon Chronicle. Apparently, Chris wasn't too bad, but was even more of a hothead on the court than off. Also, if Chris happened to be in the middle of a conversation with anyone, say out in his front yard, he would end it immediately when he knew SportsCenter was about to start. Timone 08-07-2008, 02:34 PM Also, if Chris happened to be in the middle of a conversation with anyone, say out in his front yard, he would end it immediately when he knew SportsCenter was about to start. I don't know why, but that cracks me up. I bet he hummed the song and everything. Please, keep them coming. Zekyl 08-07-2008, 04:54 PM Now all I can think of is McCosky humming the theme for SportsCenter while watering his lawn and talking with a neighbor then looking at his watch and just dropping the hose and running inside without saying a word. Glenn 08-07-2008, 04:56 PM Watering his lawn? Shirtless, I bet. You just know that he's a hairy beast, too. Zekyl 08-07-2008, 04:57 PM Like a fur coat... Timone 08-07-2008, 04:58 PM You just know that he's a hairy beast, too. No, I don't. Do you? Zekyl 08-07-2008, 05:00 PM I bet while he waters he's only half involved in the conversation with the neighbor, he's busy thinking of ways to prove he knows everything that's about to happen, vague statements that can be used to say "Told you so" in the future and the such. Glenn 08-07-2008, 05:00 PM No, I don't. Glenn 09-08-2009, 11:40 AM :mccosky: "And to all of you who have written me wondering why my NBA-loving mug is all over this hockey space now, it's because after 15 years covering the Pistons, the News has shifted me to the Wings beat -- making me probably the oldest rookie beat writer in the history of journalism." Fool 09-08-2009, 03:46 PM So is he not the Piston beat writer anymore? (I hope I hope I hope) MikeMyers 09-15-2009, 10:23 PM It says he's the Red Wings insider. I'm not sure how logical this is considering that Red Wing fans will eat him alive. |
