View Full Version : The Pistons wanted Carlos Delfino back, but he's off to Russia (old thread)

Pistons consider a Carlos Delfino return
By VINCE ELLIS • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • July 8, 2008
The Pistons have been in contact with several free-agent swingmen around the league, and one name is particularly interesting.
Former Piston Carlos Delfino is among the free agents the team is considering signing. Tomorrow is the first day NBA free agents can sign contracts, although they can agree to deals earlier.
Delfino, a 6-foot-6 forward from Argentina, averaged nine points per game in 82 games for the Toronto Raptors last season, his fourth year in the NBA.
A restricted free agent, Delfino received a qualifying offer by the Raptors in June, which means Toronto has the right to match any offer he gets.
But the Raptors have a glut of swingmen and might be reluctant to match.
The Pistons traded Delfino to Toronto in 2007 for draft picks after three years of inconsistent play and minutes. He was the Pistons’ second, first-round selection in 2003 — the year Darko Milicic was taken second overall.
Glenn 07-08-2008, 03:07 PM Langlois' head just exploded.
I would love the irony of the Pistons not making any other moves other than this one.

Black Dynamite 07-08-2008, 03:56 PM Yikes, signing him would be a sign of Joe liking him as a pick, but trading him because of his coaches scheme. Don't know if he'd fit here or in Curry's scheme, in fact I think Affalo is the same, except better overall. But at a cheap price i'd bring him in to challenging other guys for positions on this team.
I wonder if Curry requested Delfino? Maybe far fetched though.
Higherwarrior 07-08-2008, 05:32 PM doesn't make sense to me, given that we're trying to get afflalo to have a steady role next year as a backup SG sometimes backup SF.
that being said, i will STILL maintain that while he's got definite flaws, delfino was never utilised properly in detroit and is a better player than he is given credit for.
Timone 07-08-2008, 05:36 PM I hope this leads to Flip Murray coming back as well.

This thread is about to hit a low point in seriousness, and a high point in humor. Either i'm indifferent on Delf cheap, against him if he costs dough.

Completely agree. He needed to get a lot more consistent but he was never used how he should have been. He was one of our few guys that was willing to slash to the hoop but we never put the ball in his hands.

HA! I remember they introduced that "play" in a preseason game Flip's first season. George (he's still Mr. Blaha to you Glenn, sorry...) was going nuts about how all Flip's new wrinkles like that were going to redefine the Pistons.
I remember sitting there thinking "Man, we're going to see this shit all the time!...".
Yeah, not so much. (Unless new wrinkles meant spotting up waiting for something for 18 seconds and then forcing jumpers all game. If so, I must have misundestood.)

Te refs pretty much outlawed that play. They weren't ready for it in that game but Flip tried it a number of times after that and they always whisteled Delfino for crossing the arc before he was allowed.
Glenn 07-09-2008, 10:24 AM There is a chance, after the tax number comes out, that the Raptors withdraw their qualifying offer to Carlos Delfino, which will make him an unrestricted free agent.
(And before the hooting and hollering starts again, the Raptors ARE NOT going to re-sign him, they don’t have the money, don’t really want that kind of clutter on the roster again and it’s not going to change).
Anyway, I’m told Delfino has had at least one very financially lucrative offer in Europe but that he wants to remain in the NBA if at all possible and there are a couple of teams sniffing around and perhaps willing to pay him close to what he wants.
I’m not sure what his salary goal is but he made about $1.8 million last year so I’d think a three-year deal for around $7 million might be around his asking price.

Wizzle 07-09-2008, 10:33 AM there is no way this happens......that is what I'm telling myself
WTFchris 07-09-2008, 11:02 AM If this is Joe's major shakup this season it will be really sad. Especially when we passed on guys in the draft that could have helped this year to draft guys a couple years away from helping (probably).
metr0man 07-09-2008, 11:10 AM I always wondered why the hell he was always floating around on the outside at the 3 point line, waiting around for a pass to take a three? I don't know whose fault that was, his or the Flipper's scheme. He should have been a pure slasher.
Glenn 07-09-2008, 11:13 AM Hell, let's have a reunion!

That's what Toronto had him do this year, much less ball handling than he had in Detroit, and he had by far his best year. The rumors of Delfino the quasi point guard were proven untrue. He is a pure spot up.

He's a pure spot up that can't shoot which makes him useless. If dumars bring him back it's time the pistons get a new GM.

He shot 38% from deep last year, very respectable given his number of attempts. And I hate him, but the fact he shouldn't put the ball near the floor remains the truth.

You know, I didn't check the stats. You are correct, that is respectable (and absolutely shocking to me). Can I change my statement to, "if dumars brings back that moron we need to find a new GM?"
There's no denying the idiocy that is carlos delfino. There is nary a ball fake he doesn't bite on (especially in the closing minutes of close games).

Accepted.

Too bad he shot sub %40 from the floor overall. He got outshot by Mo Evans, Hayes and even Flip Murray from the field last year. And he plays about as much defense as them all too.
Maybe he'll get lucky and end up in a run and gun system where he can pad his FG% with dunks in the open court.
Zekyl 07-10-2008, 02:17 AM Doesn't he miss everything in the open court?
WTFchris 07-10-2008, 10:06 AM Yeah. But maybe he can get in a situation where someone is supplying him with dunks all the time. I just don't think he does anything well really. He was probably really talented growing up but never worked on his game because it came easily to him. Now he just stands around and chucks threes.

Glenn 07-15-2008, 04:24 PM Almost everything about this snippet is weird.
"Brown" is Hubie, btw.
But the Calderon deal makes it tougher to re-sign backup guard Carlos Delfino, a restricted free agent to whom the Raptors extended a qualifying offer. In 82 games, the defense-minded Delfino averaged 9.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists.
"The key for them is developing backcourt depth," Brown says. "Calderon is a helluva player, but what if he gets hurt and they don't re-sign Delfino? Without an experienced backup point guard, they're in trouble."
Says Mitchell, "You can't sign everybody."
WTFchris 07-15-2008, 04:35 PM So Delfino is a defensive specialist? I never knew. And he's also an experienced PG as well. Hmm.
Higherwarrior 07-15-2008, 08:10 PM hubie brown has dementia. it's not his fault.
He also has severe gingivitise which is his fault.
Glenn 07-16-2008, 04:14 PM My moles are telling me that Delfino will sign with Khimki (a team in Russia).
CindyKate 07-16-2008, 08:25 PM He always seemed kind of Khimki to me.
Kstat 07-18-2008, 09:07 AM Delfino got 3 years and $30 million from the russian club.
Glenn 07-18-2008, 09:22 AM He leaves a tremendous NBA legacy behind.

Glenn 07-18-2008, 10:08 AM I just read a post on a Toronto message board that included a translation of one of the foreign newspaper reports.
It claimed that the Pistons offer to Delfino was 3 years for $12m.
Zekyl 07-18-2008, 10:28 AM That's way too much for him. 3/$9mil would have been the highest I'd go, and even that's a stretch.
Uncle Mxy 07-21-2008, 06:45 PM Prediction:
Carlos will learn to say "I just vant to play" with a compelling accent.
Glenn 01-05-2009, 12:12 PM Delfino might return

Carlos Delfino is back on the Raptors' radar.
During a halftime interview yesterday, general manager Bryan Colangelo, without provocation, mentioned the swingman's name as a possibility.
Delfino left the Raptors last season as a restricted free agent, bolting to Russian club team Khimki BC in what is believed to be a three-year deal worth $12 million US.
The Raptors can match any offer by opposing NBA clubs for Delfino, who emerged as a very productive reserve in his only season in Toronto.
Colangelo traded second-round picks in 2009 and 2011 to Detroit to acquire Delfino, who averaged 9.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists as a Raptor.
Colangelo is prepared to match any offer, even though the Raptors are walking a thin line with regards to the league's tax threshold.
Recently, power forward Nenad Krstic returned to the NBA following a brief stint in Russia.
A restricted free agent, Krstic, whose NBA rights were owned by the New Jersey Nets, signed an offer sheet with Oklahoma City.
The Nets did not match the Thunder's offer.
Beginning this Saturday, all player contracts will be guaranteed for the balance of the season.

Also, Maciej Lampe's favorite book is "Thursdays with Morrie". What, is that a sequel or something?
