View Full Version : Name That Franchise - Oklahoma City Edition
Zekyl 07-07-2008, 09:44 PM Any thoughts/ideas on Oklahoma City's new name?
Mascot?
Logo?
Uni colors? So far they're just wearing black and white for summer league.
Timone 07-07-2008, 09:50 PM cccsdads
Glenn 07-07-2008, 10:05 PM I suggested "The DoubleWides" the first time we did this.
Vinny 07-07-2008, 10:11 PM It'll be something terrible like Steers or Covered Wagons or something.
Wilfredo Ledezma 07-07-2008, 10:11 PM Team Name: Faggotts
Team Colors: Fuchsia
MoTown 07-07-2008, 10:13 PM Just keep the tradition of the city alive and call them the Hornets. It has a good ring to it.
Mr. Oobir 07-07-2008, 10:40 PM How about the Oklahoma City Renaissance, since the team has been "reborn"? Their mascot would be pretty easy to choose :sirdouche:
Timone 07-07-2008, 10:44 PM I heard they're considering naming the team the Thunder.
Timone 07-07-2008, 10:47 PM Their mascot would be pretty easy to choose :sirdouche:
I like it. I could use the extra $.
How much do mascots get paid?
micknugget 07-07-2008, 11:03 PM I also heard the rumor that they will be called the Thunder and their colors will be red, white, and blue representing America's heartland!
Jethro34 07-07-2008, 11:04 PM I suppose "Bombers" wouldn't be appreciated.
Movers?
Oklahoma City Displaced Native Americans?
Hedgehogs? (play on Sonic)
or another play on Sonic
Oklahoma City Fastfood Drive-In Chain that doesn't exist in Michigan but still advertises the hell out of the state.
Timone 07-07-2008, 11:22 PM Oklahoma City Displaced Native Americans?
The Cherokees.
Uncle Mxy 07-08-2008, 04:31 AM "Oklahoma City Sterns"
There is a Sonic in Southgate now.
Jethro34 07-08-2008, 02:51 PM A co-worker suggested today the Outlaws. Not terrible. Fits in multiple ways. Would never happen.
MoTown 07-08-2008, 03:05 PM Then the Bandits would work - it doesn't sound as bad as Outlaws and it fits.
15buckshort 07-08-2008, 09:44 PM The oklahoma city cyclones.......
Black Dynamite 07-09-2008, 03:07 AM OC Mad Idiotic Bombers...errrr wait, that might not work...
Wildcats I say, might as well bring a college name up to the pros.
Jethro34 07-10-2008, 07:23 AM I visited a friend out-of-state and we went to a game where the home team was the Wildcats. They played hideous High School Musical songs half the game. I was tempted to burn the building down.
Glenn 07-10-2008, 08:48 AM We already have the Bobcats, we don't need Wildcats too.
Rednecks has a nice ring to it.
Wizzle 07-10-2008, 08:59 AM If it is the "Thunder" that would be pretty gay, so that will probably be it.
I'd like to see the "Oklahoma City Sooners" and maybe go with a deep red and white.
Wizzle 07-10-2008, 09:00 AM ooooohhh ooohhhh!
"The Oklahoma City Sacred Cows"
they would never make a trade
Glenn 07-10-2008, 09:00 AM Rednecks has a nice ring to it.
Of course they couldn't get away with Rednecks, but they could probably do Roughnecks and everyone would know what they really intended.
Glenn 07-20-2008, 06:46 AM "Thunder" it is
DrRay11 07-20-2008, 07:35 AM Gay.
RegicideGreg 07-20-2008, 10:42 AM That names sucks.
Possible Logo?

MoTown 07-20-2008, 05:31 PM I hope their logo is a horse that also stands for Horse Power.
Glenn 07-20-2008, 05:40 PM Wasn't/Isn't there a CBA team named Thunder?
Quad City or something?
And along with the Heat, maybe we're seeing a weather-themed trend.
I wouldn't want to face the "Seattle Humidity" in a few years, and will Vegas go with the "Las Vegas Dry Heat"?
Laxation 07-20-2008, 09:23 PM What a shit name.

Don't forget the Phoenix Suns/Murcury.
Zekyl 07-21-2008, 02:26 AM Isn't it Mercury? Then again, I'm drunk so what do I know?
MoTown 07-21-2008, 09:11 AM Yes Grammar King. It's Mercury.
Glenn 07-21-2008, 09:17 AM Interest seems high.
OKC season ticket request tops 16,000
14 hours, 18 minutes ago
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)—More than 16,000 people have signed up to a season ticket request list for Oklahoma City’s new NBA team.
Officials of the team formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics said Sunday they have concluded the first phase of a season ticket request list. Those on the list signed up in just 16 days.
Team spokesman Dan Mahoney said officials are pleased with the level of support for the NBA in Oklahoma City. Mahoney added that Oklahoma City’s sales team will contact fans to provide specific ticket details.
The ticket request list remains open for future ticket opportunities, depending on availability.
Glenn 07-21-2008, 09:18 AM I hope they use that awful AC/DC song "Thunderstruck" as their anthem.
THUN-DAH
AhhUhhAhhAhh
THUN-DAH
YOU BEEN....THUNDAHSTRUCK

I laughed.
MoTown 07-21-2008, 09:54 AM Well now the question is: What should their color scheme be? And their logo cannot be a lightning bolt, because that just wouldn't make sense.
Glenn 07-21-2008, 09:56 AM They should have been the Golden Showers.
Wizzle 07-21-2008, 09:57 AM please be Thor, please be Thor, please be Thor
BTW, runner up in the name contest was "Outlaws". Glenn where is that "Remodel the Pistons" thread?

LOL.
Apparently they thought the Carolina Hurricanes was a brilliant naming strategy. Can't wait for some midwest team called the Floodwaters.
Zekyl 07-21-2008, 05:38 PM Would you consider Hurricanes a step up from the Whalers though?

WTFchris 07-21-2008, 06:43 PM I don't know. Naming your team after a natural disaster that kills and displaces people every year seams strange to me.
Is there a team in Europe called the Bubonic Plague? I highly doubt it.
Zekyl 07-21-2008, 07:04 PM I liked the Whalers, personally. Just like I liked the Jets and the Nordiques.
In essence, the people are cheering for hurricanes.
What's wrong with hurricanes?
Zekyl 07-21-2008, 07:07 PM They kill and displace many of the people cheering for them.
Sometimes the herd needs to be thinned.
Zekyl 07-21-2008, 07:16 PM Survival of the fittest.
MoTown 07-21-2008, 08:10 PM So obviously China has a soccer team named the Sichuan Earthquakes. Their fan base is slightly depleted now.
Laxation 07-26-2008, 11:49 AM The NBA has filed for trademarks with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to six potential nicknames for the Oklahoma City team, the Associated Press is reporting.
The nicknames include the Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder and Wind.
It was previously reported that the team will be called the Thunder, although no official announcement has been made or has been scheduled.
I actually like Barons and Marshalls. So they wont be called that...
Timone 07-26-2008, 11:53 AM lmao, the Bison.
MoTown 07-26-2008, 12:41 PM The Energy? The Wind? The Thunder?
Are you guys sure this isn't a WNBA team? My god, will skirts be part of their uniforms?
DrRay11 07-26-2008, 01:05 PM I actually like Barons and Marshalls. So they wont be called that...
Agreed, the only two decent ones out of the bunch. So we know those won't be it.
CindyKate 07-26-2008, 03:27 PM How about the Dele's.
lmao, the Bison.
Uncle Mxy 07-28-2008, 08:39 AM lmao, the Bison.
Hey, Buffalo Stance could be their theme song.
Vinny 07-28-2008, 11:14 AM Marshal is usually spelled with one l. It’s not clear why the league used a variant spelling.
Wizzle 07-28-2008, 11:38 AM ^LOL
MoTown 07-28-2008, 11:55 AM That's actually untrue. While most of the world spells it Marshal, the American spelling of it can be spelled with 2 L's. Just another case of Americans making up their own rules as they go.
[/nerd rant]
WTFchris 07-28-2008, 12:16 PM The Energy? The Wind? The Thunder?
Are you guys sure this isn't a WNBA team? My god, will skirts be part of their uniforms?
I think they should go with Energy and copy the Gatorade logo. Might as well screw it up entirely.
Zekyl 07-28-2008, 12:30 PM That's actually untrue. While most of the world spells it Marshal, the American spelling of it can be spelled with 2 L's. Just another case of Americans making up their own rules as they go.

Kind of like the MAC school Marshall? The one they made a movie about.
Glenn 07-28-2008, 12:37 PM I heard someone suggest "Cities" or "City" as thie nickname (in which case they would only use "Oklahoma" as their location.
The Oklahoma Cities.
The Oklahoma City.
Hey, it's better than some of the other options mentioned here.
Zekyl 07-28-2008, 12:43 PM That's just fucking stupid. I hope they all rot in hell if they do that.
:)
So like, each player would be a city on that team?

Glenn 08-07-2008, 11:09 AM Oklahoma City Thunder Clues Hidden In NBA Schedule?
Aug 07, 2008 12:53 AM EST
Will Oklahoma City be called the Thunder?
Clues emerged on Wednesday that this will indeed the the case, with the team's official website slipping up and then rectifying the situation later in the day, according to a report in The Oklahoman.
When the league released its schedule on Wednesday, the NBA web site linked to a page that listed the “Oklahoma City Thunder schedule” and clicking on any of the Oklahoma City’s 82 games took you to the url — www.nba.com/thunder
By Wednesday afternoon, the word Thunder was nowhere to be found on the Oklahoma City schedule page and all of the links pointed to www.nba.com/oklahomacity.

I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track (Thunder)
And I knew there was no turning back (Thunder)
My mind raced
And I thought what could I do (Thunder)
And I knew
There was no help, no help from you (Thunder)
Sound of the drums
Beatin' in my heart
The thunder of guns
Tore me apart
You've been - thunderstruck
Went down the highway
Broke the limit, we hit the town
Went through to Texas, yeah Texas
And we had some fun
We met some girls
Some dancers who gave a good time
Broke all the rules, played all the fools
Yeah, yeah, they, they, they blew our minds
I was shakin' at the knees
Could I come again please?
Yeah the ladies were too kind
You've been - thunderstruck, thunderstruck
Yeah yeah yeah, thunderstruck
Oh, thunderstruck
Yeah
Now we're shaking at the knees
Could I come again please?
Thunderstruck, thunderstruck
Yeah yeah yeah, thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah
Said yeah, it's alright
We're doing fine
Yeah, it's alright
We're doing fine
So fine
Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Tunderstruck, thunderstruck, thunderstruck
Whoa baby, baby, thunderstruck
You've been thunderstruck, thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, thunderstruck
You've been thunderstruck
That's poetry.
I love the subtle innuendo.
"What's fun about playing with a building?"
Big FTW.
Maybe if they were the Oklahoma City Bugs...
Atticus771 08-07-2008, 11:12 AM FWIW, I live on Marshall Road, with two Ls.

No one ever said AC/DC songs had some deep meaning or something.

Atticus771 09-03-2008, 10:11 PM Oh man, I can hear it now. "Kevin Durant with a thunderous dunk!"
Uncle Mxy 09-04-2008, 08:00 PM More like "Nick Collison with a thunderous butt!"
Vinny 09-05-2008, 08:27 PM "We've got colors, we've got a name, and it's going to make a huge difference"
Thanks, PJ.
MOLA1 09-06-2008, 07:23 PM What a bunch of morons...this would have actually been cool. I was pulling for "The Outlaws" since the announcement.
The Thunder? How fucking gay.
Which team nickname do you think Oklahoma City should select for the soon to be arriving Sonics?
20.13% Barons
10.69% Thunderbirds
53.40% Outlaws
15.78% Thunder

Zekyl 09-06-2008, 07:48 PM Outlaws would have been awesome, Barons wouldn't have been too bad either, the other two names suck terribly.
MoTown 09-07-2008, 12:19 AM I wish they could have been named something cool like the Shock or the Sparks.
Zekyl 09-07-2008, 11:23 AM Maybe the Liberty?
D's Nuts 09-07-2008, 11:55 AM The Sky?
Uncle Mxy 09-08-2008, 08:29 AM Outlaws would have been awesome, Barons wouldn't have been too bad either, the other two names suck terribly.
The only problem with "Outlaws" is the vowel sound "a" that'd come before it. "Oklahoma Outlaws" looks fine on paper, but won't roll off the tongue easily for some. That "a-o" combo is rough.
Uncle Mxy 09-08-2008, 08:31 AM The Sky?
Oklahoma Skymasters is a little long, but would work while still being something of a nod to Seatlle.

Not to mention the problem of stealing the Sonics from Seattle and then going by the name "Outlaws".
RegicideGreg 09-29-2008, 07:20 PM I think the only thing worse than the name and logo is the jerseys. http://www.nbathundershop.com/
Zekyl 09-30-2008, 07:18 AM So they decided that since the Hornets had played on OKC they'd just use their colors or what?
Those are almost the old Cav colors are they not?
