View Full Version : Everything you need to know about Deron Washington (Picked at #59)
Kstat 06-27-2008, 01:17 AM He isn't a shooter, but he's athletic as shit...

Watch him leap over the same white kid from duke twice in the same game...

Higherwarrior 06-27-2008, 01:33 AM i remember seeing him in a couple of games this past year. he didn't jump out at me as a great player but as a guy who would run through a wall and had a real hard nosed approach. i like his toughness and attitude.
and yeah he can definitely jump out of the gym. not a finished product or that well rounded a player, but we could at least use his athleticism. and maybe he could become something down the line with some hard work and coaching.
and i remember seeing him in a dunk contest in the postseason, i think. mad hops.
Kstat 06-27-2008, 01:36 AM Sending him overseas is a great move. Keeps our rights to him and allows him to develop a jumper.
Higherwarrior 06-27-2008, 01:44 AM he could be one hell of a scrappy 'garbage buckets' type of player at the least. he'll need to get stronger and find some semblance of a jumper. but right now he looks like a pistons type of player. hopefully he develops more and can be a real player.
i love his style though- all out and attack the rim with ferocity. and he has that attitude about everything.
if JYD and j-max had a kid who played the 2/3, this is what i'd expect him to look like.
lospistones 06-27-2008, 01:50 AM Remind you of Renaldo Balkman a little?
Cross 06-27-2008, 01:51 AM wowzers the first clip was sick
Higherwarrior 06-27-2008, 01:52 AM now there's a comparison!
Remind you of Renaldo Balkman a little?
Kstat 06-27-2008, 01:54 AM I think he's a little more athletic and less polished than balkman.
Higher ceiling, but no guarantee he'll ever make the NBA.

Sorry, but welcome to 2008. Lots of eighth graders have their own highlight mixes, let alone 59th picks. That said, that first clip is absolutely filthy.
Glenn 06-27-2008, 09:39 AM Where's Ricky Paulding these days?
Still developing overseas?
MoTown 06-27-2008, 10:15 AM Sorry, but welcome to 2008. Lots of eighth graders have their own highlight mixes, let alone 59th picks. That said, that first clip is absolutely filthy.
I was thinking the same exact thing. I'm going to look for my Dane Fife highlight mix.
Glenn 06-27-2008, 01:33 PM Actually he may have the best shot of finding a spot on the bench.
NBA Comparison: Rodney Carney/James White
Strengths: Track star type of freakish athleticism and leaping ability ... A slasher. Highlight waiting to happen ... Above average defender ... Has terrific length. Combine that with his quickness and he has the tools to be an outstanding defender ... A big senior season could vault him into the first round ... Shows a willingness to go inside. Solid rebounder ... Best utilized playing alongside a great lob passer as he can let the bunnies loose for ally oops ...
Weaknesses: Must develop better mental toughness and intensity ... Lacks offensive polish. Not a bigtime scorer, struggles to create for himself and lacks a great shot off the dribble ... Doesn't seem to have a great feel for the game, or the desire to truly maximize his tremendous physical gifts ... Scores best around the basket and on the break, his jumpshot lacks consistency, although it has shown recent improvement ... Shot selection is key ... Does not always seem to play to his abilities. Shows flashes of great potential but seems to have trouble sustaining it ... Needs to improve from the line where he shoots under 60% ... Added strength would be a big benefit as it would allow him to better use his great athleticism to finish drives to the basket. He seems to have the body type that will always be on the skinny side ... Most likely a role player for the NBA unless he shows a great deal of progress in his senior year.
Notes: Son of former NFL player (DB) Lionel Washington. Could be primed for a break out season as he will likely be asked to assume a bigger role in the team's offense in his senior season with a number of the Hokies' top players graduated (Gordon, Collins and Dowdell).

Deron Washington, the pick at 59, was one of the best athletes in college basketball last season. As with Afflalo last year, the Pistons think Washington can guard multiple positions. He’s unrefined offensively, but has shown some signs that he can squeeze enough offense out of his skill set to crack a roster someday. Both Washington and Plaisted are more than likely headed for Europe, though they’ll both have the chance to change minds in Las Vegas.

metr0man 07-01-2008, 09:40 AM The other picks left me with a 'huh?' feeling but I liked this pick immediately when the draft guys started talking about him - mainly because he's a defensive specialist. If you can get a long-term defensive specialist out of a late 2nd round pick, you done good. you need guys like that to win the title. Hopefully there's a spot for him and Afflalo in our future. Pitbulls Part 2 ftw!

The news is much better on Washington. The 6-5 small forward taken No. 59 out of Virginia Tech is one of the top players in Israel. On the night David watched him play (Dec. 11), Washington produced 20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks.
"He's done real well," David said. "He's had three or four games just like that. He's had some games where he's gotten into foul trouble, but for the most part, he's done good. Even when his offense goes up and down, he's been solid defensively, averaging three steals a game."
WTFchris 01-02-2009, 04:28 PM Should I know who David is?
Glenn 01-02-2009, 04:29 PM George David, Pistons Director of Player Personnel, sorry
WTFchris 01-02-2009, 04:32 PM Yeah, I got that when I saw the Plastaid update
Wilfredo Ledezma 01-05-2009, 03:21 PM What's the competition like in Israel?
Is it like playing a pick-up game at Joe Dumars Field House??
Kstat 06-21-2009, 05:51 PM I dunno. The fieldouse can get very rowdy at night, especially during the winter. Someone tried to kill me there once over a game.
Kstat 06-21-2009, 05:54 PM It seems as if Deron is going to get a serious look this year. After watching Trevor Ariza during the playoffs, I'd imagine Joe has a similar plan envisioned for Deron.
Higherwarrior 06-21-2009, 07:44 PM yeah i read that tidbit too, where he supposedly ripped it up in israel this year and really developed his game.
should be interesting to see how he factors into the 15 man roster.
Glenn 06-21-2009, 07:48 PM I don't know how much of a shot he's got at a roster spot, but he's got a better shot than Sammy Mejia, at least.
Higherwarrior 06-21-2009, 07:49 PM true. the source at least said he has a good shot at factoring into the lower part of the rotation. or something to that effect. seems like we're pretty high on the kid.
or maybe just 'pretty high'. we'll see.
Kstat 06-21-2009, 08:01 PM Helps his case that there is much more space on the roster this time around.
Higherwarrior 06-21-2009, 08:20 PM at least one of those roster spots is reserved for lance blanks though.
mercury 06-21-2009, 09:12 PM Last thing we need is a bunch of green 2nd rounders sucking up our depth...
[John Mason voice] And now for your Deeeetroit Pistons... we have Trent Plaisted, Deron Washington, Walter Sharpe, Jonas Jerebko, Curtis Jerell. Leo Lyons
Higherwarrior 06-21-2009, 09:47 PM JJ is a kid i can definitely see us pursuing in the 2nd round. and if we don't get a PG at #15, a guy like tony douglas from FSU would be a great 'eddie house' type of 3rd PG for us. a scrappy shooter who can play a little bit of PG especially with other ball handlers on the court.
other 2nd round PG sleepers i like:
nando de colo PG
patrick beverley PG
devendorf PG/SG
we could stash some of these guys overseas for a year if we wanted but i think a couple of them could be a part of the roster this season, depending on what other moves we make in FA and the trade market.
Higherwarrior 06-21-2009, 09:48 PM BTW- trent is playing in europe next season already since he lost most of this year to injury.
