View Full Version : DET/MEM - Marc Gasol
I wouldn't be the guy living in Barcelona if I didn't at least throw it out there. What if we threw a pick at Memphis for his rights?
He's not his brother at all. He's a center more than a PF. Instead of an offensive force he likes to bang bodies, patrol the paint and grab rebounds. And he's developed some nice shots from around 5 feet out, where he can be deadly. He was the MVP of the Spanish league this year which is one of Europe's better leagues, and he's without a European contract which means that his NBA team wouldn't have to worry about paying anything out to a club over here.
The only thing is that he's probably going to make a lot more money here than in the NBA, especially with the dollar getting slapped around by the Euro right now.
WTFchris 06-13-2008, 10:21 AM What about Max for Gasol and #28?
Zekyl 06-13-2008, 10:23 AM If we were sure to get him here that would be an interesting idea.
Zekyl 06-13-2008, 10:36 AM I'm just curious as to why Memphis would do this deal. Aren't they already soft up front?
I was just thinking that maybe they feel they have no shot at getting him to play for them; that after his brother's experience, the situation of the team itself and the probability that he would stay here and take the money over playing for them, they would be better off seeing if they could get something for him at least.
But that's just my thoughts on it (read: pulling it out of my ass).
WTFchris 06-13-2008, 11:16 AM They'll also probably use #5 on a big man as well. Randolph? Lopez? Love?
They would probably want a SG to pair with Gay (and move Miller back to the 6th man role), or a backup wing for Gasol.
DrRay11 06-13-2008, 06:51 PM Honestly, he looks like the player Darko was supposed to be (little less athletic). In Spain, anyways.
Zekyl 06-14-2008, 02:05 AM What would it take to get Gasol and Miller from them?
Cross 06-14-2008, 02:40 AM gasol..are you serious? this guy was a 48th pick for a reason. we already got a bigman in the working.samb.
I have no idea whether he'd be right for the Pistons or can make it in the NBA, but I also can't agree at all with what you're saying. He was picked a few years ago when he wasn't even half the player he is now. What helped his development was spending a couple of years under a coach that stresses post play, defense and rebounding. I don't think he'd go 48th today.
I also don't think that he's a work in progress as much as Samb is. In Spain Samb played second devision ball while Gasol was already frist division material. And I have no doubt that Gasol right now is still much more developed than Samb. Much more.
Again, I don't know if he's NBA or Pistons material, but I definitely know that using his draft position and Samb aren't valid arguments as to why not.
Cross 06-14-2008, 11:01 AM He was picked the year after Samb was drafted. I dont know how good he is or what kind of player he'll be but trading for a late 2ndrounder is not what dumars or the pistons should be looking for
Zekyl 06-15-2008, 02:56 AM He wasn't saying it would save the team or anything. Just a nice depth move.
DrRay11 06-15-2008, 03:11 PM No shit... Cross acts like we'd be trading a starter for him or something.
tool.

Says the fan of Jamal Crawford.
Vinny 06-15-2008, 03:55 PM Euros who project as depth players in the NBA like Gasol often carry alot of signability concerns since they have the option to stay in Europe and thus they usually go lower in the draft.
Cross 06-15-2008, 10:43 PM Says the fan of Jamal Crawford.
i dont even know how thats relevant. he's got a good crossover and makes highlight plays. i love that in him but he's the last player I would want as a piston.
Zekyl 06-16-2008, 07:19 AM The last?
WTFchris 06-16-2008, 11:09 AM Well, Okur was picked pretty low too. Vinny is right. Guy like Gasol slip because they may be under contract in Europe (and the NBA team is limited on how much they can help with the buyout). Most teams can't wait for help (even on a 2nd rounder). At worst you are hoping to get a decent role player with that 2nd rounder that can help you pretty soon.
Cross 06-16-2008, 11:30 AM The last?
fine. but i wouldnt want to think of any trade ideas that could net him as a piston.
im not saying marc gasol is shit and he probably isnt. but i dont even think id trade our next years minny pick for him
MoTown 06-16-2008, 11:41 AM I've never seen him play besides those highlights. And an extremely unathletic (and probably soft) big man is the last thing the Pistons need.
The last?
Okay maybe an unathletic, chunky 3/4 who shoots too many threes because there are no fours would be the last.
WTFchris 06-16-2008, 11:53 AM I just checked his numbers from last year. 10.8 PPG, 6 RPG and 1 BPG. Not that impressive. In fact he had zero starts. Shoots a high percentage, but probably isn't anything more than a stiff off the bench to backup a center for 10-15 MPG.
His numbers this year (directly off the Spanish league website acb.com):
Minutes: 33
Avg. Fouls: 1.8
Blocks: 1.8
Off Reb: 2
Def Reb: 6.4
Assists: 2.3
Points: 16.2
FWIW 16 and 8 in Europe is very similar to a 20-10 in the NBA, the average score is lower.
You guys are definitely more knowledgeable than I am in basketball but he is not a soft chucker (albeit chunky) who stands at the 3. He tries one 3 attempt every few games. He's a banger and stays close to the basket. Would he be successful at that in the NBA? Not a clue. But trust me a bit here on how he plays, I saw at least 10 games of his this year, probably closer to 15. Those highlights I got from simply typing his name in on youtube.
As Zekyl stated I just saw this as a depth move, having a backup C who's actually a C. I mean I'd rather roll the dice on him than having Ratliff again.
WTFchris 06-16-2008, 02:04 PM I don't know. His NBA comparison is to T Mac, and not the one with the lazy eye.
I'd trade our 2nd for him, it's worth a chance.
Glenn 06-20-2008, 10:48 AM Memphis is signing Marc Gasol to a 3-year deal.
He's a restricted free agent this summer isn't he?
