View Full Version : 2008 User Mock rules and draft slots (time slots updated!)

WTFchris

Here are the rules for the User Mock (this may be updated as needed):

--Each team gets a thread (started by the assigned GM) within this forum.

--In your thread, you lay out the current roster, your assessment of team needs, etc. This should be done ASAP for time reasons.

--Others can post advice or their own thoughts, but it's up to you what you do with that info.

--When you are on the clock, you post your pick in your thread, in bold, red text with all other picks up to yours in regular text (quoting will make this fast)

--The draft is on 6/26, which is in 2 weeks, so that is the window that we have to work with.

--Each GM must make their pick within the time slot posted below (will post after this). If trades occur (both GM's must agree), the trade must be announced and the pick must be made prior to that time slot being up (regardless of who makes it). No future picks may be traded.

--You may make your selection prior to your time slot if you are on the clock (it is encouraged to speed this up), however you do not have to. If you cannot be present during your time slot PM myself and Glenn with your top picks (with enough to get to your pick in case they are all selected) and we'll make the selection from that list. If you fail to do so we'll pick the highest rated player from ESPN's big board.

--Each GM/team will be graded at the end. Maybe even some bonus alpacas for the best grades. Either we'll do a site poll or elect someone to grade all the picks.

Pick 28 goes to Memphis (like you have noted), but you have Glenn as GM. Only problem is I'm Memphis' GM. No big deal since I'll just go ahead and make the pick, but you may want to make sure you don't have any others listed like this. (Out of three teams, I have no second round picks so I have to get all the fun out of this that I can.)

WTFchris
06-13-2008, 10:11 AM
^Thanks. I fixed it. I tried to catch all the pick conveyances but the format NBA.com has (as you see above) is a little confusing. Usually they say Team A (from team B). So the first team listed is the team actually picking. In this format you have to follow the trail and I must have missed that one.

Yikes, I just noticed that my Knicks draft tonight from 7pm to 9pm, times which I'm rarely online, and probably can't be, tonight.

Looks like I better get my thread posted.

Glenn
06-13-2008, 10:47 AM
I don't suppose that there is any way that we can start Monday, is there?

I feel ill prepared.

If that's a big deal, I'll make it work.

I suppose that I can make my pick before 9 am on Monday, since I am technically still on the clock until then.

WTFchris
06-13-2008, 10:59 AM
If we didn't start until Monday we'd have to give each person less than 2 hours.

WTFchris
06-13-2008, 10:59 AM
What do we do about Cross?

WTFchris
06-13-2008, 11:00 AM
Well, since the draft is on the 26th, I can push them all back 1 day and we'll still be fine. That way everyone has the weekend to get their threads up and everything. I'll make that change now.

Actually I just noticed I posted the 19th twice, so that won't work. I'll just make the 2nd round picks shorter so we can still start Monday.

Glenn
06-13-2008, 11:46 AM
If you guys really want to get nerdy, once the draft is over, we can have an open trade period (maybe until opening night?) and then someone can plug our rosters into a video game and simulate the season for us to see who wins.

I'm on crack. For the past two weeks, I've been getting Charlotte and Memphis confused in my head. No clue why. I think I may have been planning to take Charlotte in the mock draft, but they were taken.

Either way, disregard my crackhead ramblings. I have no second round picks, and Charlotte is all Glenn's.

Looks like Cross took Rose at #1 for the Bulls, which I suppose means that Wizzle/Miami is on the clock until 1 pm with the #2 pick.

Glenn
06-16-2008, 03:46 PM
I wonder if Cross is offline for the day.

I have no idea what time it is where he is.

We might need to scrap the set schedule and just take things as they come until we get serious delays.

It might actually go faster without a schedule.

WTFchris
06-16-2008, 03:58 PM
Except that if he doesn't pick today then we'll be 3 picks behind going into tomorrow. It's unlikely we'd catch up when not many people are on during the day.

Good. I'm only here until 4:00 (6:00 ET) and Glenn sent me his list. So hopefully your's is in by then. If not then Glenn can simply post his prior to the time slot in the morning.

WTFchris
06-16-2008, 05:05 PM
Glenn's is the last pick for the day but people are welcome to pick ahead of their slot (but not out of order of course).

I'll make my selection right after Glenn's unless I get a curve ball from your pick.

Glenn
06-16-2008, 05:05 PM
If I had to guess, I would guess that Cross would take Brook Lopez for Seattle at #4, since he thought Minny should have picked him at #3.

But the rules are the rules...

WTFchris
06-16-2008, 05:07 PM
The problem is that he never even did a thread on them so we don't even know what he thinks their needs are.

EDIT- They do need a big man as well. I don't know, let's take a quick poll (I'll set one up).

Glenn
06-17-2008, 09:32 AM
So Hermy's up with Milwaukee.

Haven't seen him post in a while, hmmm.

WTFchris
06-17-2008, 10:20 AM
He PM'd me. Actually we have a trade to announce.

I'm sending him #10 and Swift for #8 and taking on Gadzuric's contract (which will expire the same time as VC and RJ).

06-17-2008, 12:42 PM
Sacramento (Wilfredo Ledezma) and Memphis (defrocked) have a trade to announce.

Sacramento trades:
#12 pick
Spencer Hawes

Memphis trades:
#28 pick
Kyle Lowry

I'll let him explain his side, but Memphis moves up in the draft to get another young prospect, and get Hawes who could become a decent C, a position we're badly in need of. Iavoroni is supposed to be great at developing big men. Lowry is a nice young PG, but this is the one position Memphis has depth at, with Mike Conley, Jr. and Javaris Crittendon.

Glenn
06-17-2008, 12:49 PM
Beno's agent took note of that^

WTFchris
06-17-2008, 01:50 PM
Yeah, Lowry is a decent young PG but I'm not sure he's worth the #12 pick. They probably could have jumped Indi and swapped with the Bobcats (Love would have been there still I think) for cheap and drafted Westbrook. Might only cost you a second rounder for that.

Wilfredo Ledezma
06-17-2008, 02:34 PM
I was going to draft a PG anyway, I just have this feeling based on what I've been reading that Beno is going to command top dollar, and I don't think he's worth signing to a rediculous contract (we already did that with Mikki, and it's not working out)...plus the draft is thin and with Augustin likely to be gone, Kyle Lowry is a solid young player to pair up with Kev Martin...

and I'll be shocked if Spencer Hawes is still in the NBA within the next five years...he has Rafael Araujo written all over him...

and Douby running the point, wasn't going to cut it

Even though Lax's time is up, I'm fine with waiting until he picks. I'll be able to get my pick (#12) in before 9 tomorrow, so we won't be behind at all.

After being shocked by Indiana's selection of Alexander, the Grizz's #12 pick is available for trade. Westbrook, who many considered the top PG after Rose in the draft, is still available.

If I can't make a deal by 9 this morning, I won't hold things up and I'll go ahead and make my pick.

06-18-2008, 08:03 AM
Thanks for waiting - I got confused with what time I had to be online, and in the end concentrated too much on the Pistons pick and completely forgot...

Anyway, I liked Alexander from the 3min I saw of him one game, so picked him ahead of Westbrook - but I'm happy with that trade... it makes more sense than my drafting theory ;)

I believe I have another trade to announce, and it's kind of a weird one.

Memphis (defrocked) and Indiana (Laxation) have agreed to the following trade:

Memphis trades:
Pick #12

Indiana trades:
Draft rights to Pick #11, Joe Alexander

I PM'd him asking about his glut at SF with Dunleavy, Granger and now Alexander, and he realized he wanted a do-over on the pick, essentially. So I move up a spot to grab Alexander, and he saves a couple bucks and takes his PG a spot later.

Updated to reflect Toronto/Minnesota trade.

How was that trade allowed? Craig Smith can't be traded. He's going to be a free agent.

I realize we're not being as strict with the rules on this draft, and I don't have a problem with that. But this crosses the line, IMO. Someone could theoretically trade for Kwame Brown and get a whole bunch of cap space, and that obviously isn't legal. Plus a GM can't decide to sign and trade a player alone. That is as much on the player and his agent as it is for the GM.

I think you should only be able to trade players that can actually be traded. If everyone disagrees, then I'll just make my picks and keep my mouth shut. :)

Glenn
06-20-2008, 02:33 PM
Uh oh.

I had a feeling that allowing trades had the potential to backfire.

You make some great points there, shags.

I think we have to disallow this trade on those grounds.

Anyone disagree?

jturbo
06-20-2008, 02:43 PM
He's restricted, you can sign and trade those guys. This trade is legitimate.

Glenn
06-20-2008, 02:47 PM
The hard part for me is assuming that Smith would be willing to go along with it. That's a pretty big leap.

As a restricted free agent, starting July 1 he can go out and sign an offer sheet with another team and then it's up to Minny to match, not match or work out a sign and trade with that other team.

Also, the free agency signing period hasn't begun yet, so it couldn't even happen now, if I am not mistaken.

Again, I'm no expert, so I may have some details wrong here, but I think that is the crux of the problem.

shags
06-20-2008, 02:47 PM

You can't trade any player who is going to be a free agent, restricted or unrestricted, during the draft.

jturbo
06-20-2008, 02:50 PM
But we could do it after the draft then?

shags
06-20-2008, 02:50 PM
Two simple rules:

1. You can't trade a player who will be a free agent.
2. All trades have to pass on the trade checkers, either ESPN or RealGM.

Glenn
06-20-2008, 02:51 PM
Shags,

The only problem with #2 is that the $ on those haven't been updated for 2008/09, or at least they weren't the last time I looked at them.

shags

Shags,

The only problem with #2 is that the $ on those haven't been updated for 2008/09, or at least they weren't the last time I looked at them.

During the draft though, you're still trading using 2007/08 salaries. That doesn't change until July 1st. So they would be accurate.

Glenn
06-20-2008, 03:01 PM
Good to know.

You guys could try and rework the trade quickly if you'd like.

I think the rights to Lopez for the two picks would work, since Lopez doesn't have a dollar value until he signs, right?

Another option would be to change the mix of players involved to include eligible/tradable guys instead.

I think we have to void it in the meantime.

jturbo
06-20-2008, 03:11 PM
Ok, if I'm reading this right I can withdraw my qualifying offer to Craig Smith and then S/T him.

"A team can withdraw its qualifying offer to a restricted free agent, in which case the player becomes unrestricted. This happened with Toronto and Keon Clark in 2002. The qualifying offer cannot be withdrawn after July 23 without the player's approval".

"A sign-and-trade deal can be made even with players who have been renounced, but cannot be made when the player is signed using the Mid-Level, Bi-Annual or Disabled Player exceptions. Sign-and-trade contracts must be for three years or longer, but only the first season of the contract must be guaranteed. The three year minimum (even though the last two seasons may be non-guaranteed) ensures that the new team will not acquire Bird rights to the player any sooner than if they had signed him directly, because if they want to give him a new contract using Bird rights then they would have to waive him first, which resets the Bird clock".

This info is from the NBA salary cap FAQ.

Are we maybe just talking about the timing of this trade with Smith's restricted free agency status. Do certain dates have to pass for this to be done appropriately?

I think that's it, http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#89

Also, the assumption that he'll agree to the sign and trade without even testing the free agent waters.

jturbo
06-20-2008, 03:48 PM

Chris PM'd me his top 4 picks for the Clippers, but they've all been drafted.

1) Serge Ibaka
2) JJ Hickson
3) Ante Tomic
4) Jason Thompson

I'll give him a little bit of time to see if he logs on, if he doesn't fairly soon, we'll give him the best available big, since that seems to be where he was going with this pick.
