View Full Version : Official 2008 MLB Draft Thread
Wilfredo Ledezma 06-01-2008, 04:24 PM Draft is Thursday (June 5), airs on ESPN2...
I'm sure all of you will be watching
The Rays have the first pick (again).
Obviously, the Tigs, who are picking at #21, will and should take the best player available (basically the guy nobody wants to take in the top 3 beacuse his agent is Boras). We have picks 21, 63, 95.
Either way, it will be good to revamp our minor league system after selling off all our premium goods last winter...
As a caveat, quite a few Michigan players could go pretty early, with the most regarded being Zach Putnam, he's being projected to go anywhere from the 1st to 3rd round...
Here's a mock (http://www.mymlbdraft.com/MLB-Mock-Draft-2008)
Obviously, I expect this thread's discussion to get intense and heated...
Glenn 06-05-2008, 01:47 PM Keith Law mock: http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/draft2008/insider/news/story?id=3426919&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fmlb %2fdraft2008%2finsider%2fnews%2fstory%3fid%3d34269 19
WTFchris 06-05-2008, 02:22 PM I've heard we're going to try and get another pitcher to replace the arms we traded away.
Glenn 06-05-2008, 03:29 PM I've had my eye on catcher Jason Castro for the Tigers for a long time.
Also, no I haven't.
Timone 06-05-2008, 03:30 PM I've had my eye on catcher Jason Castro
There's a joke to be made here, but I don't feel like it.
Glenn 06-05-2008, 03:34 PM http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/draft2008/news/story?id=3427340
The Tigers are just a few picks away, I'm so pumped.
Also, no I'm not.
Wilfredo Ledezma 06-05-2008, 03:46 PM me too, I was hoping that Posey kid would fall to us due to his signability (he's looking for 12 mill), he'd be an ideal Tig, but San Fran took him at 5
Glenn 06-05-2008, 03:50 PM I just noticed that the Astros took Castro at #10.
Wilfredo Ledezma 06-05-2008, 03:52 PM Man, Keith Law is one creepy talking S.O.B., I wouldn't be surprised if he's a former sex-offender.
Timone 06-05-2008, 03:53 PM Turned it on and then turned it off a couple seconds later.
Glenn 06-05-2008, 03:58 PM Take the best pitcher available.
I'll guess Gerrit Cole or Christian Friedrich
Timone 06-05-2008, 04:00 PM ^Wow, someone knows their stuff!
Glenn 06-05-2008, 04:00 PM Although "Shooter Hunt" would be pretty effing sweet.
Glenn 06-05-2008, 04:01 PM ^Wow, someone knows their stuff!
Cole has a lot of positive upside potential and the same can be said for Friedrich, but he's a little more polished.
Glenn 06-05-2008, 04:05 PM Well, Cole and Friedrich are both still there and the Tigers are up.
I suppose it comes down to righty vs. lefty, but I really think you have to go with the more major league ready of the two, because of the Tigers window of opportunity.
I'd go with Christian Friedrich
Glenn 06-05-2008, 04:08 PM RYAN PERRY?
WHAT THE FUCK?
Timone 06-05-2008, 04:09 PM Glad I've never been a Tigers fan.
Glenn 06-05-2008, 04:10 PM NERD ALERT

WTFchris 06-05-2008, 04:15 PM That guy didn't even pitch in high school it says. Who knows, maybe we found a gem. Hopefully he can be a setup man for Zumaya some day.
Wilfredo Ledezma 06-05-2008, 04:35 PM Ryan Perry...
lets just hope he's not like Kyle Sleeth, Kenny Baugh, Matt Anderson, Matt Wheatland, or any of the other busts pitchers we've taken in the last decade...
Glenn 06-05-2008, 04:39 PM Friedrich went to the Rockies, damn.
And the Dbacks just took Mark Schlereth's son.
Glenn 06-05-2008, 05:02 PM And the Yankees get Cole:
This is a great pick; he fell to the Yankees for financial reasons. Cole has the best arm among the prep pitchers in the draft. He has a loose, quick arm. He has the best fastball of the high school pitchers; it tops out 97 mph. He needs more consistency on the breaking ball. And he needs to just throw his changeup instead of guiding it. He's a high-ceiling arm that could be a No. 1 starter. If that doesn't work, he could be a dominant reliever.
sigh
WTFchris 06-05-2008, 05:53 PM Ryan Perry...
lets just hope he's not like Kyle Sleeth, Kenny Baugh, Matt Anderson, Matt Wheatland, or any of the other busts pitchers we've taken in the last decade...
Well, maybe since he hasn't put many miles on that arm (not being a pitcher in High School) that won't happen.
WTFchris 06-05-2008, 05:54 PM Law's comments:
Perry touched 100 mph in the NCAA Regional last weekend. He was consistently at 94-98 mph on the Cape last summer. Arizona tried to make him a starter, but it didn't work. He has the best stuff of any closer prospect in the draft. Given the Tigers' bullpen situation, Perry might be the first player in the draft to make it to the majors this year.
DrRay11 06-05-2008, 06:36 PM More importantly, who did we take in the 2nd round?
Wilfredo Ledezma 06-05-2008, 10:17 PM we took a bunch of pitchers, we took a pitcher out of Kentucky, a pitcher out of Vandy, and a catcher out of North Florida...couple other kids too, can't remember
Wilfredo Ledezma 06-05-2008, 10:18 PM U of M's Zach Putnam got picked by the Tribe, and some kid from Wayne State got taken by the Padres
Wilfredo Ledezma 06-05-2008, 10:20 PM Tigers Picks 2nd round on...
Cody Satterwhite, RHP, Ole Miss
Scott Green, RHP, Kentucky
Brett Jacbosen, RHP, Vanderbilt
Alexander Avila, C, Univ Alabama Tuscaloosa
Tyler Stohr, RHP, North Florida
Wilfredo Ledezma 06-07-2008, 10:38 AM First 3 players taken out of U of M (Putnam, Abraham, Recknagel) all were taken by Cleveland...

Tahoe 06-08-2008, 02:59 PM Like everyone has been saying...heavy on pitching. Big pitchers
Vinny 06-09-2008, 02:22 AM Tigers (http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2008/drafttracker.jsp?p=0&s=30&sc=pick_number&so=ascending&st=number&ft=TM&fv=det) draft
Thanks for posting that. If there's a common theme it's that everyone seems to be high on potential and tools, low on actual performance to date. Our developmental team's gonna have their work cut out for them.
Did anyone watch any of the scouting videos from that link? Each one's set to a different strange little song. Don't know why. Just kind of weird.
